what type of shingle roof

We have a slate roof that have outlived its life. The roofer suggested Landmark premium shingles as a replacement. Any thoughts about it? I don't want a "flat" looking roof - I can't explain it any better than that. Expense is a concern as I just found out we also have to replace the furnace in this old (but lovable) old house.

Any input?

What makes you think your slate has no life in it? It's my understanding slate roofs last forever.
I'd get a second maybe even a third roofer to look at it. Make sure whom ever is looking at it is well versed in old homes and their issues.
There's alot of roofers out there whose sole job on this earth is to sell unsuspecting homeowners new roofs whether they need them or not.

Please don't sign a contract with this roofer. Get additional estimates/opinions from roofers who specialize in old house slate/tile roofs. If you have a local historical society, that would be a good place to start looking for references.

Please don't let this one company take you for a ride.

Slate and tile have very very long lives.

What is a "Mossy Green" in real life? Getting everyone to agree on color descriptions in real life is tough. Trying to pigeon-hole or define color like that on a monitor is just plain insane. :~D It'll never happen. Jamesboro Gold may very well be showing to you and on your monitor far more green than it is on mine. Monitors are like snowflakes. (I love that saying) They're all different and that fact among several other things makes how you see an emitted color (a.k.a. additive color, monitor color, screen color, electronic color) different than the way I and Squirrel may be seeing it. So it's not possible for us to all see the same color monitor to monitor thru cyber world. In real life we could discuss and compare and probably come to an agreement about Jamesboro Gold; plus context and light is everything. But this is the best us cyber buddies can do. Take our best shot with additive color and arm ourselves with paint chips. If what you see on your monitor is the color you want, then you can go look for a paint chip that looks like what you are viewing in the virtual. It might be Jamesboro Gold, it might not.

IKO are the worst quality shingles on the market right next to Tamko. They're thin, have no impact resistance and have had multiple class action suits as well as individual suits against their products. Darkest black shingle is Owens Corning Onyx Black. GAF does not make a color called "black" but have "charcoal" which is their black shingle.

When I was choosing the room color I tried the online Owens-Corning site to play around with the colors. When I had narrowed it down to 4 colors I asked the contractor for strip of each to try out. I think the strips were about 30" wide and 8-10" tall (not skimpy littles samples). We laid them on the roof across the front of the house and kept them there for about a week so every time we drove up to the house we could evaluate the colors.

There were 3 recommended color palettes with an additional style board below. My personal favorite was the additional style board that contained the Pantone warm taupe. However, if I were picking a color for the trim on your house I would get a sample made in the same color as your window frames and try it, while I was considering colors.

The house was built in 1932. When we did the home inspection when we bought the house about 3 years ago, the home inspector did tell us that the roof was near the end of it's life. It did leak before and we sort of patched it. I'll get additional estimates and such though - good idea. The guy who came by dealt with us honestly in the past - when he didn't have to. Nevertheless that doesn't mean he'll do the same now.

Slate roofs will last a long time if properly cared for. Thicker guage slate will last longer then the 1/4" slate that was used in developements fron the '30's. Copper valley's wear out.
More often these roofs die of benign neglect or incompetant repairs.
