Experience with Hagerstown Kitchens cabinetry?

We were all set to go w/ Shiloh but have been looking around for inset cabinets at a reasonable price that offer exposed hinges vs. the concealed hinges that take up a fair amount of interior cabinet space. (We have very limited cabinetry so every inch counts.

Any experience or thoughts?

Hi,

Not sure how close you are to the Baltimore/DC/Northern VA area, but we worked with Stuart Kitchens. They carry Omega/Dynasty who now offer inset cabinets. They also work with 3 or 4 other custom cabinet makers.

They were excellent to work with and have showrooms in all of those areas. Our cabinets are not inset.

We installed Legacy Bertch cabinets for an island we put in a few months ago. They seem to be well built especially for the price. One thing you might want to know is that if the ones you are purchasing happen to be the distressed look (ours were cherry with cognac heritage matte distressed finish), it is very MINOR distressing. We were very disappointed when they arrived but have grown to like them even if they weren't what we thought they would be. Good luck, it's a tough decision!

weenie, not in Hagerstown, we are in Annapolis. Hagerstown is a custom builder, they build their own cabinets. We did not use a kitchen designer as we generally knew what we wanted and they put it on paper. However they did provide some suggestions. They do have their own in-house kitchen designer/sale rep that can help you put your ideas on paper and help to come up with solutions and designs. Pricing is all dependent on the size of the kitchen, level of detail you want in your cabinet, wood species, features etc, so what we paid will not necessarily represent what you will pay. I will say that we were able to get kitchen cabinets and two bath vanities (one is a double and cherry, the other is single) for approx. +/-20% less than what we would have spent at Plain and Fancy or the like which only included their basic cabinet box and hardware. Pricing is more in line with some of the Amish builders recommended on here and was a hair above a semi custom builder like Jim Bishop, but the quality is exponentially better. Hagerstown does offer a semi custom line if costs for their custom line prove to prohibitive. They are worth considering, you might be surprised.

I'm going to be building in Maine, but I'm probably sticking with a mid range brand for the cabinets, something like Medallion or Innermost. (I've got Innermost now, and it's fine.) If I could find a local mid-range guy, I would consider it, but the local cabinetmakers I have talked to want to focus on trophy kitchens, as that is where the profit is. Fair enough. It's not just the expense, it's the hassle, anxiety, and scheduling issues. The quality is variable. And expensive cabinets won't make me a better cook. I'd rather spend the money on a cooking course in Paris. At the same time, I'd like to support local industries in Maine. So I'll be buying local when I can. Cedar shingles, stuff like that.

Chris: I don't know if Bellmont had those style (1900 & 1600) designations in 2010. I measured the wood that was used for the boxes and it was 5/8" (as are my Omega kitchen drawer boxes). As for comparing cost, my Omega cabinets were more expensive; ours are mostly semi-custom, but with a couple of custom ones that were needed for our kitchen design. Omega's semi- and custom lines work seamlessly together. When we remodeled the master bath the year after the kitchen, we went with the Bellmont cabinets to save a bit of money. The insides feel just as smooth and 'finished' as the Omega, and they have held up just as well. Three years later we remodeled our guest bathroom and used Woodland Cabinets. They look great, too, and have also maintained their beauty and function, but the drawer boxes are not as smooth on the insides (also 5/8"). Inside, they do not appear to be as high a quality as the Omega and Bellmont, but we are still happy with them. All three have been issue-free for many years, so I would recommend any of the 3 brands.

Hagerstown Kitchens I have seen IRL - a couple of displays, and installed in a lighting showroom that is a client. They make a very good quality cabinet and their finishes last-even after being handled by a few thousand people over the course of 5 years.

Thanks - their pricing is in line w/ Shiloh cabinets. And they offer exposed hinges which was the only reason I was looking for another cabinet line. Also lots of colors and no upcharge for custom paint matching. Pretty interesting.

I hated their plastic inserts for roller shelves though - it makes them adjustable but I didn't like seeing the plastic. So that's just a heads up for others -- I liked what I saw though other than the roller shelves.

We have a large kitchen that we did with Hagerstown. We have been very happy with the quality of the cabinets. The price was also attractive. Other lines with inset door were significantly more expensive.

We did inset natural cherry with shaker doors. We also have their cabinets in our bath and laundry room.

The roller shelves do not bother me aesthetically. Functionally they are quite nice.
