does this rug work in our entry hall?

Here are pics of our living room and dining room. Sorry that I don't have any better pictures. The entry hall is in between the rooms and has black and white tile. I would like a runner and what do you think of this color and style? I love yellow, have soft yellow living room and entry walls and as you can see, yellow wallpaper in the dining room. Also, the rug under the dining table is dark maroon with magnolia type floral.

Thanks for your opinions. I've really learned alot by reading this site and looking at many of your pictures.

Oh, boy, you are going to smack me, but here goes.

Have you ever considered moving the DR rug to the LR? The DR rug seems very heavy compared to the soft tones and curves of the wallpaper, and the LR rug is really too small for the seating area, imo. Plus the LR has the piano and other wood furniture, as well as the pink tones in the furnishings, that might be wonderful with the DR rug.

I would then think about the yellow rug for the DR. I think it would be amazing with your dining set and wood floor, working wonderfully with the wallpaper as well.

Then maybe the existing LR rug would work in the entry? I think the yellow rug you show is so pretty, but may feel kind of blah against the strong black and white diagonal tiles (which I love!).

I like NO rug in the entry. The entry is commanding in its simplicity. (Wipe feet outside, of course.)

Lol, blfenton. If I'd made a dirndl skirt from the checks, I might hate those curtains too! I'm not sure what the plural of toile is, ipinkmountain. I'm not even sure how to pronounce it, either. I like the floral, too, but, I also wondered if it was a bit dated. I'm also not convinced it holds up well to the strong colors of our wood cabinets. It's not like I'm a die-hard toile lover, nor a die-hard chicken lover. It's more that they looked like they worked with the maple. Interesting thought, Spanish, about swapping the stripes to the kitchen and the toile to the dining room. What if we use the dining room all day long, 3 meals a day? That's how the space is used. Does that change the formality aspect, and thus the toile landing in there, any?

Thanks, all! The entry hallway measures about 9’ x 3.5’. I measured the kitchen table and it’s about 3.5’ x 3.5’ so I’d probably need at least 6’ wide in order for the chairs to have enough breathing room. Most of the rug sizes I’ve seen that come close to fitting in this space are either 5’ x 8’ rectangle or 5’ x 5’ or 6’ x 6’ square. What’s the rule about rugs when the room size is rectangular but the table is a square? Do you find a rug to match the room or table? I’m decorating on a (tight) budget and trying to get as much accomplished as possible before we host people at our house for my sons birthday party on October 28. Online shopping seems to be my go-to at this point since it’s difficult to get out of the house with a toddler and a newborn (who is cluster feeding right now lol). We do have a Target and a Home Depot nearby, and I can do ship-to-store at either for the rugs which would allow me to look at them before committing to taking them home. That’s why I’ve been looking at both of those places. Plus Target has a 30% off sale on all rugs that ends tonight! I know the geometric prints I’ve been looking at may not be the most original, but I really love it. If I did use this print somewhere, do you think it would be better for the entry way runner or under the kitchen table? Then I could find something complementary for the other. Could someone help me choose something that complements this print and my house color scheme? (Preferably at Target - or Home Depot) My house has lots of shades of blue - Pottery Barn porcelain blue silk dupioni curtains, peacock blue pillows, blue and white kitchen backsplash. It also has hints of light green. Our sofa is gray, walls are light tan/beige. I’m at a loss with the walls in the entry. I thought the distressed mirror with the sconces looked nice but I guess wall art might be a nicer option. Again, in the essence of time (and money), I don’t know if I’ll be able to find something in time for the party. Any specific suggestions? I like the idea of family portraits there but I want to inject some texture or interest in that space. If someone could link to specific suggestions of items, I would love you forever! Thank you ginatay124! I love the picture you attached. While I really lIke the idea of using an octagonal rug to showcase the architecture, I am concerned that putting a table in the middle of the hall on this rug would present some problems in my home with the traffic flow. And since I am having trouble finding a sufficiently long and wide rectangular console, your suggestion for using a mission style dresser or sideboard is excellent. Here then are some additional questions that I struggle with: 1. Can I mix an octagonal rug in the center of the foyer (to echo the architecture) with a rectangular table on the side wall if I don’t want to place a table in the center of the foyer? (In other words, can I mix shapes in the foyer or does an octagonal rug always call for a round centered table and a rectangular rug needs a rectanglar table to echo the lines?) 2. I love the idea of chairs on either end of the rectangular table, but I have no idea what kind of chair would look good. The only mission style chairs I have seen are the ones around dining room tables and they don’t look particularly comfortable or welcoming. If I were to get a small fabric covered chair, what style would be appropriate to go with the rest of the furniture in the foyer? You and Beverly have given me some wonderful ideas and any suggestions with regard to the two questions above are greatly appreciated.

And now I have learned it in Italian, Zalco! I love the branches too. The gardener is hear doing some work today else Id be scouting something with a little more oomph than dying bamboo. He was with the property 10 years before us and he is very protective of it. DH gets scolded when he drives on the grass, LOL. KSWL, I have a lot of books, even after giving many away to the library, so I will start trying to up my game and not focus so much on the few books we actually use (i.e. the dictionaries). Could you keep the current urn and use floral foam to insert branches then cover in moss? That way you could make the arrangement taller as well as wide. Teeda, oooh, i have both floral foam and sheet moss and clumpy moss (whatever you call it). I got on a moss kick after envying Rubyclaire's big beautiful bowl of it (I think that was whose it was?) I will have to look up some ideas about how to do this! I do have a cloche but it isn't nearly as wide as the urn.

Les took the words right out of my mouth! I think the DR rug is dying to move the the living room. I also agree with teedup that the entry really doesn't need a rug - the tile is a focal point and anything over it would be distracting. If you need a feet wiper all I would do is a black square/rectangular mat just inside the door that won't really be noticed.

On a side note - I LOVE your fireplace surround!

I love the black and white floor just like it is! and I think the yellow rug would be wonderful in your dining room....I'm stopping there because I can't tell enough about the LR for an opinion and besides, you didn't ask :^)
But I do have a side note...
I've always been curious about your posting name, and now I see the Christmas tree with the notes and clefs...now I just have to know what kind of musician you are?????

Hello Jaybird!

Well, it's probably not too hard to tell from the tree, and other parts of my home, I am a music teacher. Piano was my emphasis. I LOVE music, all kinds, and am into it quite a bit, aside from my teaching job!

Thanks for the comment about the rug. I think I'll have to give the yellow one a try!

I agree that the foyer floor is gorgeous and shouldn't be covered with a rug.

I must tell you that I really love the sofa in your living room. Would you mind sharing it's origins? Is it vintage or new? Is the front tufted? I'd love to find something like this! Thanks.

Thanks for your very kind comments and I would love to tell you about the sofa. It belonged to my husband's GREAT GRANDPARENTS. We are in our mid 50's so it's pretty ancient! Of course, it's been re-upholstered many times through the years. Most of the furniture in our home has been passed down to us from older family members. In fact, we have very little "new" stuff. When I was younger, I always wanted brand new furniture. Now I'm so glad we kept several pieces of furniture and refurbished it. It means something to us. Of course, I have no idea what my kids will do LOL! Guess it won't matter much.

n2bach, thanks for sharing. WOW, I sensed something special about that sofa but would never have guessed it was 4th generation! Amazing. How lucky you are to have a family that treasured and passed on these items.

Guess that means I'll have a hard time "copying" you (LOL, there's a thread about others copying our decor!).
