Canister sets.....?
Comments (8)I keep my flour in the freezer; I had weevils once, that was enough. How can canisters be tacky? OK, some individual canisters can be tacky I guess, but the concept of canisters on the counter isn't tacky per se. And don't ask me about coffee. I'm a coffee freak. I roast my own beans in a Behmor 1600 coffee roaster and I'm full of opinions about grinders and storage methods! If you love your DH you'll buy the freshest beans you can find and grind them yourself. Buy small quantities, never more than a week's worth. You can store them in the freezer, but that's not necessary. Optimum storage for beans is one where gas can get out of the package but air can't get in. Hard to find, I just use disposable plastic storage containers. Grind beans just before you brew. I know people who throw out grinds that sit for more than two minutes between grinder and the water hitting them. I think that's overkill. Am I rambling? :-)...See MoreTin Flour/Sugar Canisters
Comments (14)I'd deffinitely look at Goodwill and be willing to go back regularly. You can spray paint them any color you want (light sanding and primer first), and that would allow you to match up trays, cookie jars, and add other pieces as needed. Stencil on the words you want. As for handles, you could rivet on leather ones. You can even paint whatever you like on them. There's lots of books on how and patterns you can transfer if you don't know how....See MoreAn awesome flour/sugar storage idea that didn't work (for me)
Comments (0)So I picked up these: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20233683/ They might be great for some. I found they fit just fine in an akurum (old version) 15" ikea shallow drawer, though they are meant for the new system. They hold a large amount of flour, sugar or other dry goods, the lid is clear, and I thought I'd be able to pull open the drawer and scoop away, neatly and easily. But the darn lid doesn't close well, and you pretty much have to get the whole bin out of the drawer and fiddle and mash it to get a good seal, which kinda defeats my purpose... Oh well. Back to imperfect counter canisters until I find a better solution. Meanwhile, I put the bins to use with overflow dry goods, not bothering to seal them (which of course means anything open goes in its own sealed bag.)...See MoreFlour, sugar, etc. storage in drawers
Comments (15)I use half-gallon Mason jars for canisters. They cost around $12 for a box of 6. The openings are a little small for a full-sized measuring cup, but that does not bother me. I tend to weigh flours rather than measure it out by volume. I use quart-sized mason jars for other things in the pantry. They are cheap and look nice, even if you keep them out on display....See Morebuffalotina
