If you can't contain the dogs' activities with a fenced-in area, this is a no-win landscaping situation. Sorry, but the dogs will pee on, chew at and dig up mulch or whatever you plant, and a lush green lawn just won't happen. Not sure where you live, but you might want to do some research via local nurseries or extension offices to find grass varieties or shrubs for your situation. Meanwhile, if I were you, I'd get some deck boxes for the railings around the deck and design a few small boxes of annuals. Flowers around the edge of that railing might brighten your spirits while you hunt for solutions to your unique situation....See MoreThis fireplace surround is cheap and ugly!
Comments (20)You're right. It's a mess. Not to put too fine a point on it.... :>) Look at Lyban's exanple, and at Annie's first example, to see what the proportion issue is. At the moment, your mantel is too skimpy, your tiles are too big, your side sections are too narrow, and the molding around the tiles is too small and uninteresting. So it needs some rejiggering to fix those issues. Pal is right about adding the chimney breast above. I would: ...pull off all the trim, and build the false wall above (taking care to line the sides up precisely with the sides of your lower section, not the edge of the mantel shelf). ...install a deeper and more fully trimmed mantel to reduce the dimension of the section between the firebox and the bottom of the mantel assembly. ...pull off the tiles and replace them with tiles that are a quarter the size of the ones there now (which look like floor or shower wall tiles) with a glossier finish, or whatever you like, and build the wall in around those. ...and add molding around the tiles that is the right style and heft to bring the whole thing into proportion....See Morecheap fix ideas for fireplace?
Comments (10)Hmmm, I like the idea of the fern. I just brought ours in for the winter and trimmed them back to within an inch of their lives, but I could just buy a new one. No fake plants or fake candles. I know it is the stereotypical pretentious princess, but I dislike pretty much fake anything (but I can whole heartedly admit that sometimes they look better than the real thing). I also don't mind leaving it empty as pal suggests, but I would have to retile which is a summer or possibly spring break project - until then the fern would make it look a little less stark and cover the broken tile. Any thoughts on where to look at screens? I used to admire RH's but haven't looked there in years. Thanks so much, lisaam. We've been back in the house for almost 2 years now and I am just starting to think about decor stuff again. I was so sick of it. I remember posting about how to integrate the ugly 70s piano into the living room and then 24 hours later it was drenched in water and eventually painted, thanks to insurance, a very chic matte black (still makes me smile)....See MoreNeed help, my house is ugly
Comments (16)Also you need to add some trim across the front of the porch (currently is only a row of siding) and across the top of the window on the right of the picture. If you do remove the shutters (I don't necessarily agree with that, but they currently are too skinny for sure on the right windows) probably beef up the trim around the windows - making sure all 3 window trims match. Otherwise the window will just look puny. One of the things that give it a "cheap" look is the lack of, or inadequate (such as the skinny posts) finishing touches like good trim. Go to a siding website manufacturer website to look at all the options for trim. You can upload a good photo of the house too, and try out different colors and combinations. I dislike brown roofs for the most part also - especially when matched with yellow! Most are a shade of brown that is hard to work with. The photo AB posted looks great though, if your roof is close to that color then you do have several options for a siding color. Last resort - even asphalt shingle roofs can be painted (Behr makes a paint specifically for this), but just like painted siding, it won't last forever and will require touch ups and eventually full repainting to keep looking good. My painted aluminum siding needed work after about 10 years....See Morebananafana
