I have a question regarding a formal table setting. If you know in advance that a guest doesn't drink wine, would you still set the table with wine goblets for this guest? I have been setting it and placing all the wine goblets on the table, then removing them when it is time to pour the wine. Which one is proper? Love your input. Reply before Thanksgiving-----please.

Not positive but I think that you should remove the glasses when pouring the wine. My theory is based upon when my husband and I go to fancy restaurants, they usually already have wine glasses available and then remove them if you order something else.

Additionally, I heard of gatherings where they serve Chilled Apple Juice/Grape Juice in the wine glasses for some guests. That may be not as formal as you like but it is another option.

thanks Kimbery. That's the way I have been doing it for years. That's an idea to serve a beverage in the wine goblet. That way I don't have to remove the glass. Happy Thankgsving.

Absolutely get footed for both wine and water. The wine goblet can be larger than the water goblet. Buying in sets is smart and saves $$$$! We have all sorts of wine glasses-from the finest Riedel to big boxes of glasses used for parties and large holiday gatherings. We often use our fine crystal for the water, but rarely use the crystal wine goblets. They are too small for most wines. The only "rules" I follow are: The water goblet is placed above the knife The wine glass(es) are to the right of the goblet Check out Amazon, BB&B, Target, etc. for boxes of "party" wine glasses-meaning versatile and can be used for both red and white wines. Keep in simple!

Those stacks are for looks only and shouldn't be used for a real dinner service. Of the plates, only the charger plate and the bread plate (which is not stacked, but is placed at the upper left of the setting) should be on the table before dinner starts. If you aren't concerned with being perfectly true to protocol, you could also have your plated salad, plated appetizer or soup bowl already atop the charger right before the guests are seated.

lyfia - I have several and they're even available on Amazon too. I like giving the kitchen towels as a housewarming gift along with a GC. I think the mix is a little too much. Also for mixes to work right you need the right amount of colors and right amount of seats to form a pattern. Eg, 3 colors, 6 seats, round table. YKWIM. I still like the very first photo, left side. But Id use the white tracery charger. I've been know to plan my meal around have a single use for the first little plate, just so I can use it.😉

I would agree. If a person does not drink wine, I have been known to put whatever they ARE drinking in the wine glass (water, juice, even soda!). If there are children present, they LOVE to drink out of wine glasses, even milk is special out of such a pretty glass.
