Since the hall is wood and therefore creates a separation I'd probably choose to make the master bedroom different from the childrens' rooms to create a unique atmosphere there. But, really, I think this is more about your inclination than anything else, because either way would work since your carpet colors are not going to be adjacent to each other.

I would definitely go with neutrals in all rooms. If your kids ever get sick of the blue, you can always repaint, but it would be much more expensive to change the carpet out. Besides having blue walls and blue carpet is a lotta blue. lol.

I would do a very neutral carpet with a little touch of darkness to it........maybe a taupe or a mushroom, or even something a couple of shades darker than oatmeal........something that would lend itself to many wall colors, and yet not easily show soil or stains. And I would most assuredly do it through all the carpeted areas upstairs. You need continuity as much as possible in flooring.......making your rooms stand out with wall color or bedding or fabric.

My friend is putting a bid in for a house and she was showing us pictures. The one thing she said she would do immediately is change the carpet in the bedroom areas. All three bedrooms were a different color - and they weren't neutrals. One bedroom had a pink carpet with one pink and three green walls. To each his own but I think neutrals in each room would be more calming...

Personally, I would not have all the same carpeting.

I mean, especially in the kids' rooms, why not have a little fun with color?

But then, I'm the one who dislikes white walls and ceilings....

The second biggest mistake I made with this house was I picked different color carpets for each bedroom. While I wouldn't mind as much if I would've picked neutral colors I picked slate blue and a really pretty green in the other. I can't tell you how many times I've asked myself why o why didn't I just pick the same brown that's in the LR and hall?? Learn from my mistake! :)

I'd use the same neutral color throughout that will work with many paint colors you might use now and in future. If you want to jazz up the floor area in the kids' rooms, then put down a smaller area rug on top of the carpet.

I have a carpet cleaning business, which means that I'm in a lot of homes, & see a lot of different decorating styles. Where carpeting is concerned, I find that places with the same carpeting throughout the house generally also have the same decorating style throughout, & it's often just - well, to me anyway - boring Later model homes, little imagination displayed, not a lot of life. (disclaimer: this is not ALWAYS the case, but I find that it is common)

The other side of the spectrum is lots of different, non-neutral colors on the carpets - usually, (again, not ALWAYS) the carpets are older & not expensive - often so old they are borderline in needing replacement - & there's a mishmash of styles & personalities showing through. Sometimes it works wonderfully, but usually only when there is a very creative person living there. Not so easy to pull off.

What works best, in my experience & opinion, is neutrals that work together, but not all matching. Maybe the master in one color, the other bedrooms in another. Different floors, different carpets. Area rugs are where you can bring in the colors. With the neutrals you have room to be creative, or safe - whatever makes you comfortable. Carpet can be a very expensive & long-lasting choice - the one thing I do recommend is buy the very best you can afford - it's an investment!

Sometimes it can be cheaper to do the same color b/c of the sizes....you can use the extra from one room in the next room. Get an installer out to get you a quote.
I have carpet upstairs where kids are & went with 1 color - kinda darker - it almost looks like the color of coke!! This is after DS & friend went running on cream colored carpet after shaking up a plastic coke bottle when much younger then tried to clean it up with toliet paper:) All the parents were watching Janet Jackson pop her boob out during Superbowl - shame on us letting the kids run wild unattended!!

and change things up with different paint colors. Newdawn -- my house is 85 yrs old, not that old, but very cold. When we moved in, we ripped up all the carpet and redid the yellow pine floors. We had area rugs down and it was darn cold (we face north on a hill overlooking a harbor, so we get a wicked wind). We just did an addition, adding about 500 sq ft of upstairs space. Part of the new space is over an open porch, so we are taking every bit of insulation from cold that we can, hence the carpet. If we wanted to do hardwood floors (which we love, and have downstairs), we would have to rip up all the old pine and relay new floors (b/c we'd never match it, and I the look of different floorings, esp. wood), which means we would have to do heated floors, plus area rugs and we have increased our costs fourfold. We got quotes, it would have been about 20,000 more (radient wood floors).

I have a 4 BDR home with a large hall (not carpeted)that separates all the bedrooms. I have a different carpet in each room. If you carpet all of them the same, then be prepared to re-carpet all of them at the same time.

Since you have wood floors in your BDRs, have you thought about buying remanants and having them bound rather than wall-to-wall?

I was just going to add what gracie said. Remnants or just measured carpets that cover most of the room with nice binding would add warmth and still allow the pretty floors to be seen on the edges (leave about a foot at minimum).

I'd not do the same carpet in every room...I find that so boring, and in a period home...just not right.

It's funny...I'm looking to buy a 100 year old home, and the first order of business will be to get rid of all that wall to wall carpeting in the rooms. We will sit on a hill facing a harbor :oP There's no way I want wall to wall in a period home. DS's room will probably have a very large carpet in it, but still, I want to see wood.

It depends upon sight lines and floor plan, too. Do you see the floors of one room while standing in another? If the floor plan separates the rooms adequately, and the transition spaces are consistent, there may be no problem using different colors in different rooms. Or you could bind sisals or sea grass room-sized area rugs in all the rooms for continuity and throw individual, colored and patterned area rugs over them.

Since it will be expensive to have both wall-to-wall and then buy rugs, would you consider a beautiful, patterned carpet for the MB and then a solid for the other bedrooms? The cost would probably be a wash, since you wouldn't have to buy the others.

I've seen Karastan ads, where I've loved their colorful carpets. It would have to be one that you wouldn't tire of, but they look just like their rugs.
