Can I fudge on freezer bags?

Hi there,

I'm in the midst of my first ground beef plan. I started out with about 20lbs of ground beef, and I've only got one dish left to go!

So, now that I'm ready to start throwing this stuff in my freezer, I'm trying to find a way to skimp on freezer bags.

Will it be okay if I pack all the items in regular ziplock bags, and then slip them inside freezer bags? It seems like a silly question, but I'd hate to see anything go to waste.

I was hoping that then I could keep the freezer bags on the outside, and reuse them easily.

Also, will rubbermaid style containers help cut down on the smells leaking out? My mom used to have these thick, white plastic containers that she got from the restaurant business. Is something this heavy duty required, or will regular rubbermaid help keep the garlic and onion stinks inside? :-)

The freezer bag idea sounds like it will work just fine - just so long as the freezer bags are on the outside, of course. :-)

As for the smells, are you talking about smells in the freezer, or hanging on to the container? I always had a problem with the smells leaching into the plastic when using tupperware or rubbermaid stuff (then when you clean it, the dish still smells). I bought some of that new glad ovenware stuff, and it is *wonderful* - smells don't stick, stuff can go straight into the oven, easy to clean - I really like it (and now I can't find anymore, so am bummed out).

I also like just using aluminum foil pans (the cheap ones) -they aren't as easy to clean, but they work very well for rice-based cassaroles, etc. Another thing I've heard of is freezing everything in different containers until they're solid, then taking them out and wrapping them in tin foil for storage.

Congrats on your freezer full of food! Sounds like you've been busy today (I cooked last burger last night - 5 dishes in the freezer!). :-)

My mom never owned a freezer bag. And I don't always use them. I save breadbags, potato chip bags, plastic grocery bags, cottage cheese cartons etc. I double wrap everything.The surface that touches your food should be food safe. For example, plastic grocery bags are fine for the outer wrap but never the inner wrap. Recently I froze four dozen beef and bean burritos. I made them small, and packed them two to a sandwhich bag (after freezing on trays). I put these baggies into a bread bag. Six burros to a bread bag. Then I twisted the bread bag just above the burros and folded the bread bag back over itself.
I tied the packages shut with yarn. We'll use them up over two months.

Hey...That sounds like it. I'm going to try it. I had found another one on a search, but it wasn't the same it included a Hershey Bar also. I made it last Christmas and it just wasn't the same. This one has the same directions and same ingredients so should be the same. I just wasn't sure of amounts. Thanks so much. Glenda

"I don't understand the french door thing. Why have to open two doors? It has an application in kitchens with small aisles, I guess, but I dunno - I'd rather have the aisle spaced correctly. The ones with the big trays across the bottom are the worst to me." LOL - side by side fridges are basically French Door fridges - it's just the freezer is one side and the fridge is another - get an old school fridge with the freezer on top or bottom with one door the entire width of the fridge and I don't care how big your kitchen is, you will be desiring side by side or french door for the half-width doors. Also, if you prefer a side by side, why would you have to open both doors on a french door fridge? Your already used to accessing the fridge through a narrow door anyway :o) The side by side fridge I have came with my house - otherwise I would never own one. You can't put in odd-ball sized stuff, and normal stuff doesn't even fit well. It has allot less drawer space than the Samsung freezer on the bottom I had in my town house, and my Samsung was the smaller 18 cubic foot and my side by side is 25.5! To me, a side by side is like a 1500 square foot two story house vs. a 1500 square foot ranch. Theoretically they are the same square footage, but in the two story you loose space to stairs and hallways - not nearly as much actual usual space. I too have an extra chest freezer, but as others stated I would have one anyway. I have a foodsaver and I'm not afraid to use it. I buy things in bulk, on sale, and freeze them routinely. I wish I could find a fridge with a single height freezer drawer for quick access to the stuff I use regularly and the rest dedicated to fridge space. That would be ideal. Indeed, if I ever remodel my kitchen I'm seriously considering putting a fridge only in where my side by side is and a single freezer drawer (if they make such a thing? Surely someone does) in my island. I'd gladly sacrifice a little cabinet space for some more fridge space. I guess if you don't cook at home often, or eat that many fresh fruits or vegetables it's less important, but I never seem to have enough fridge space.

Here is the recipe from Allrecipes, Linda: IRISH CREAM TRUFFLE FUDGE 3 c. semisweet chocolate chips 1 c. white chocolate chips 1/4 c. butter 3 c. confectioners' sugar 1 c. Irish Cream liqueur 1 1/2 c. chopped nuts TOPPING: 1 c. semisweet chocolate chips 1/2 c. white chocolate chips 4 T. Irish Cream liqueur 2 T. butter In the top half of a double boiler melt the 3 c. semisweet chocolate chips, 1 c. white chocolate chips and 1/4 c. butter until soft enough to stir. Stir in the confectioners' sugar and Irish Cream until mixture is smooth. Stir in nuts. Place mixture in a prepared 8 x 8 inch buttered pan and lay a sheet of plastic wrap over the top; press and smooth top down. In the top half of a double boiler, melt remaining chocolate chips until soft. Remove from heat and with a fork beat in the butter and Irish Cream until smooth. Spread topping over cooled fudge with a knife. If a smooth top is important, place plastic wrap over the top. Refrigerate until firm, 1 to 2 hours at least. This fudge can be easily frozen. I didn't use a double boiler. I melted the chips in the Microwave 45 seconds at a time until they were melting. I also didn't put a top layer on it and the main layer turned out with a nice wavy look.. I put foil in a rectangular pan larger than an 8 x 8 inch one. Figured it would be easier to get out of the pan and cut. Haven't cut it yet, but licked the bowl clean and it really tasted very, very good. Only have two kids coming over to keep away from the fudge, but will make rolo candies on top of pretzels for them. So now make something sinful!!! Madonna

Nope, i don't. What I think might catch on more would be BPA-free, cheapo disposable liners sold in family-pak size (similar to the way fold-top baggies are sold), and which come in several sizes. They should be accordion-pleated along the sides and base. And sized so that Size-One would fit, say, most small containers. Size-Two would fit most medium containers. And Size-Three would fit most large containers. Then those disposable liners can be inserted inside most-sizes of containers. Why do I say this? Well, you may consider this primitive but, for example, to store soups or even meat, I sometimes use Budget gallon-size food-storage bags, which used to come in 100-packs (i'm not up-to-date on how many per pack it's down to now). I use the gallon-bags to line a 1.3quart rubbermaid-container, or even an empty marshmallow-fluff container. I then fold over the excess plastic over the external-side of the rim, after which I put the lid on, which effectively covers both the rubbermaid-rim-plus-makeshift-liner. For mushroom sauce or gravy, I use budget Fold-Top sandwich-baggies as Liners inside discontinued Smart-Balance containers (which used to be this size: https://cdn1.viewpoints.com/pro-product-photos/000/037/621/300/1269879447-47716_full.jpg I love it, because it keeps the containers from getting greasy, and there's barely a need to wash anything. I get freezer bags at the dollar store--they're not quite as thick as name brands, but they're not too bad. Generally I freeze in deli containers that I buy at the bar/restaurant supply store--50 for about $6. They come in half pint, pint, quart sizes and the lids are all interchangeable. Oh, and I, too save all those cottage cheese, margarine and other containers.

I haven't bought a freezer bag in a long time. I save the box-liner bags that come with cereal, crackers, etc. They are thicker than freezer bags. I love them! I use them for so much - freezer, cheese, etc.

I even have some that I folded into sections lengthwise and made little slits about every centimeter. I made several rows of these. I use these for produce. I got the idea from those bags leaf lettuce comes in. They work as well as those Ziploc produce bags with the little holes in them which you cannot find anymore.

Can I fudge on freezer bags?
