I've looked at some of the articles/lessons, and even some of the oil and acrylics forums, but mostly I'm obsessing on the Watercolor Gallery forum, studying the different styles and levels of ability. Seeing some gorgeous paintings here, and learning what I like and don't like. The site is a true educational experience for me . . . in very much the same way that GardenWeb held my hand when my house remodel took place and I had to make all the decisions myself. As I've said a million times, gotta love the Internet!

Thanks again, Emagineer, for steering us to Wet Canvas.

Am I in trouble with you now? Spending time on WC is a world of learning. There is so much available. Don't let the Great and Known artists intimidate. They are wonderful for writing up workshops and tips, answering any questions from newbies to big talent.

I'm into chalk pastels. The background is washed. Using a wet brush on the pastel line drawing to create a sense of color. Am terrible at watercolor. My head cannot wrap around light to dark.

Ran into a video posted there about a gal who paints on water. She fills a square pan and drops oil based paints, then uses something similar to a toothpick going through the paint for her designs. The paint floats, this one was of abstract leaves and flowers. Water color paper is placed over the design and lifted up. Very intriquing.

There was a workshop which was a monthly task I loved. I still use the technique at times. A painting of yore was divided into grids. We would recieve one of the squares and have to paint it. Then send in our task. After all had their's done, the squares were put together and we saw the entire painting.

The above is an old tool for learning to paint or draw. Find something you love (8X10)and separate into a grid over it. About 2" to 4" squares. Only paint one square. Intimidation is gone and if you want to continue with the rest of the squares it is a wonderful lesson on learning/growth. I've cheated at times and printed out the color image with grids, then a BW gridded one, painted right over it. Best to cut it up so you are focused on a single square.

My subject matter is old trucks, rusty anything and worn architectural details.

Are you both artists and what medium? What do you love to paint?

Last year we raised "meat chickens" and put them in cages and sent them off to be killed. I was crying the whole time. It maybe was a little easier because I knew this kind of chicken wasnt bred for a long life. But I felt guilty for raising such a chicken (kind of like the Replicants in Blade Runner) This year we got "mixed heavy breeds" and are keeping the females for laying. We raised, hugged, talked to and spoiled all of them. We started with 15 males. They are now at the point where they are terrorizing the pullets and each other. So weve started butchering them. Five last weekend were the first weve killed ourselves. We decided this was more humane and in a way the completion of the process we had started. My husband cut off the heads, I plucked ,and he eviscerated them. He was cutting up the first when I heard him say"There are live bugs in this crop"we both kind of laughed. But it was just this whole cycle of life thing. It was very hard, the whole thing and harder for him since he actually killed them. We helped each other through it. It was kind of agreement between us to raise these animals, care for them (believe me they had good lives), humanely kill and then eat them. There is something kind of profound about putting into your body food that really comes from the land you live on. There is a wonderful section of a book by John SeymourThe Self-Sufficient Life: Independence on Five Acres (1970) in which he talks about thishe did all his own butchering and was a most kind soul. Has anyone read it?

Animals will react, either positively or negatively, to changes in their environment. Last Christmas, it was a classic comedic moment. We have a 2 year old rescue collie who adopted us last october (See the "New Family Member" thread on the conversations side), so this was his first Christmas with us. When my wife and I went to get the tree, my son brought the dog into his room with him, while we brought the tree in and set it up. I called to my son to let the dog out, and as he rounded the corner trotting into the living room, he stopped dead in his tracks and even took a couple of steps back with a growl, because he wasn't expecting that tree to be inside HIS house! It really was funny because it caught him so off guard. But thinking back over all the pets I've had, it's not really a surprise.

Socks, you must be thinking of Mickey, who died in January 2010. I'm having second thoughts about taking on this cat. I don't know if she's nursing, but I think she's pregnant. And apparently she comes from the horse farm next door. The two cats I have now came from there, too. A female had been coming around, just like this one. She had just weaned a litter, and I rounded them up, taking the orange tabby kittens to the shelter (where they said orange was the color most likely to be adopted) and keeping the mother and her black kitten. She was pregnant when I had her spayed. I certainly don't want to punish this current cat for her owner's neglect, but there's a limit to how many cats I can save. There was a time when my DH and I rescued dogs, cats, and horses without limit, but I'm not in that position anymore. I'll talk to the owner about taking the cat myself to be spayed, at his expense. We discussed this a few years ago, but at the time he wanted me to keep the cat in my house for the required two-week healing period. I might agree to do that this time if certain conditions are met. Or maybe I'll find he's not interested. We'll see.

Can't pass anything by you, eh Bama??? Of course, this one is nearly finished. Then I have another which has a new top, is sanded and primed, and then there's the third which I haven't started yet. All three chair bottoms were found on G-day. Can't get anything by Jane either!!! Yep, too much Silicone! Should have read DB and his wife... Enjoyed the faux pas when you pointed it out. :O) I don't think I'll be using it as a seat. It's more like a little side table now. I leveled the top when I placed it on the legs. OK, now to retreat to contemplate on the grout... Feeling the pain of the brain cells having to make a decision...

I'm a writer. My only visual art, if it qualifies, is photography. I design my own rug hooking (example below--a wall hanging I made for my new grandson before he was born), but that's more of a craft. The only painting I've done is to decorate wine and martini glasses. There's a lot I don't know. Like how to load a brush. :-)

What you said about grids is interesting. I received another tip involving grids . . . my cousin, who paints in oils, suggested that I grid a photograph and then reproduce the image, grid by grid, on my watercolor paper. And then turn it upside down and paint, grid by grid. So many intriguing things . . .
