Wallpaper and a bulkhead?

Hello,

I've been considering putting up wallpaper on one wall in my dining area, which is open to my kitchen.

The problem is that I have a mitsubishi ductless air conditioner unit on the upper left hand corner, as well as a bulkhead on the right hand corner. (Sorry I don't have photos but I hope you can visualize this).

Any suggestions? Maybe I shouldn't go this route? I need visual weight on this wall to counterbalance the visual weight of my kitchen on the opposite wall. I also intend to put a painting on this wall.

On the subject of wallpaper...I'm also visualizing using wallpaper on the focal wall of my guest bedroom, where the headboard is placed. But that wall is curved at the top because of a gambrel roof. So, again, is this a bad idea?

I am trying to visualize the dining area, not sure if I have it right. Do you already have particular papers in mind?

At any rate, I love wallpaper and have a lot in my home, including the kitchen and dining room. The most difficult application was in an alcove in my bathroom, but it is very pretty. I don't see why you couldn't have paper in both areas as long as the paint, trim, and art complement each other.

Will you be doing it yourself or hiring hangers?

Mira, What is the bulkhead and what does it look like, size, what is it made from, etc.? In my area, a bulkhead is the same as a hatchway, an often metal slanted set of doors outside near the ground built over a set of stairs that descend into the basement....

I wish we hadn't made the rail quite so wide now, but at the time I thought it would be great to have it wide enough for bottles, figures, and other collectibles. I do like that it looks more finished than the other way. Ignore the plates, I just stuck all my extras up there to see what a plate collection would look like.

Oh, Barbie!!! Thank you for that link. That was a wonderful webpage - full of great ideas -- I LOVED it! I know that our cabinets will be trimmed out on top (which is the bottom of the soffit), but what a great idea to trim them out on the top (at the ceiling) too. And painting the soffit the same color of the cabinets is also a great idea (I was planning to paint them the color of the walls)... it may be a little tricky because they are off white, glazed-with-ivory cabinets... but I am pretty good with stuff like that, I think I could get pretty close. I know about Wallwords and Wallgraffiti, etc., and I have actually been toying with something like that, too... although I am planning to wait till the kitchen is done and decide then. I have the same exact set-up except my staircase is all the way to the left, over the sink. I painted the entire room one color, including the ceiling. I didn't want to draw attention to it.

You simply paper around the A/C unit. For the bulkhead, depending on what it looks like, you can paint it the same color as the ceiling or paper it, depending.

As for the bedroom, again, it depends on the paper and the location. Are you trying to draw attention to the curve or make it less obvious.

Photos would help in both cases.
