hand soap and dish soap combo

Hi, I am trying to see if I can get away with just one soap to wash dishes and hands. That way I don't need 2 dispensers.

Does anyone have success with any brands.. does it have the anti bacterial property like ready hand soap does?

I've been using Palmolive pure and clean for both dishes and hands in the last few weeks and am liking it. It's way easier on my hands than dawn. It does not have the anti bacterial properties but I have heard that washing hands for 30 seconds removes just about the same amount of bacteria anyway. I have a ceramic soap dispenser (not built in) that I use in my kitchen now and love it.

That shot of very concentrated Dawn that is supposed to wash a sink full of dishes got me thinking about why it was so special. I used an empty bottle of foaming hand soap and made my own foamy dish/hand soap using a small amount of regular dish soap and water. One squirt on a brush is just the right amount to wash hands or clean a dish or pot (maybe 2 squirts).

Sounds like scale build-up. You can buy scale remover or use vinegar. You could use the same idea of soaking a towel in the scale remover or vinegar and leave it over night. I would use some old rag that you can just throw away and probably cotton would be best if you choose to use that scale remover which is kind of strong. Vinegar will probably not harm a cloth. This may take a few times to get it all. But if it's hard and sharp that would most likely be scale from your water. We have scale in our water and vinegar gets it off. It can also build up on the shower head and cause the water to not come out very good, you can put vinegar in a baggie and put it on the shower head and use some tape to hold it there over night. It will be clean in the morning!

When I was at Walmart the other day, in the dishsoap section, there were several that said something about it being good for hands and dishes. I normally use the Walmart brand "Equate" antibacterial liquid handsoap. It's pretty gentle as far as dishes go, but still effective and I have not noticed any film on the dishes washed. There are, however, soaps that specifically say that you can use them for both.

Our kitchen isn't done yet, but we're putting hand soap in the dispensers at both the prep & main sink. I considered putting the dish soap in the dispenser, but I like to be able to squirt my dish soap at different places as needed. If it's in the dispenser the only place to put it is either in the sink where it "falls" or on the edge of pans/dishes as far in as the spout sticks out (I hope this made sense!) As to using dish soap for both...I find that even Palmolive is too harsh for regular hand washing...maybe if you only did it once or twice a day, but I wash my hands many more times a day. IMO, the "hand soap" label on the Palmolive (yes, we use that brand) refers to "hand dish washing" as opposed to "machine dish washing"...despite "Madge"! ("you're soaking in it!")

I have Seventh Generation free and clear dish liquid in the bottle it came in for general purposes, in the built-in pump dispenser on my laundry sink, and in a battery operated sensor dispenser for chicken hands. It's thin enough that it doesn't clog either of the pumps, though if they don't get used for awhile (i.e., many days), like any liquid soap or detergent, it'll dry out on the end and need to be cleared. I can't touch a lot of detergents, including Woolite, but the Seventh Generation is very mild and never hurts my hands. According to people in one of those old threads, it does have some standard ingredients that can be irritating to people who are sensitive to them. Doesn't bother me. :) I also use it for a lot of general cleaning.

I actively avoid buying antibacterial hand soaps & other products. It is very hard to find hand soaps that are NOT antibacterial but there is one I like from WalMart.

I believe those antibacterial products are a marketing gimmick playing on our collective fear of dirt and germs. Instead of recognizing that some exposure to dirt and germs is just fine and may actually boost our immune systems, we try to annihilate the germs.

Antibacterial soaps do not clean your hands any better than regular soap, and they have the potential to increase the problem of bacteria resistance. See the link attached

So I say, use one soap for both and don't worry about finding the antibacterial stuff.

I also avoid antibacterial soaps. I read they're not good for septic systems and are no more effective than regular soap at getting things clean and germ-free. I usually buy organic dishwashing soaps at Trader Joe's that are gentle enough for washing hands.

I agree with the other posters about avoiding anti-bacterial soaps. I use Seventh generation, Ecover and Biokleen with great success. I also am starting to develop heavy scent allergies and these all come with no fragrances. I do use a separate hand soap because I have really dry skin. There soaps are gentle enough though to be used as hand soaps.
