Backsplash Help, Old Gross Plaster Walls

Hi, Thanks to all for the great advice I have found here.

I am updating my kitchen in order to sell my house at (hopefully) better price.

I am going with Wilsonart HD for the countertop.

I would appreciate some advice on the backsplash. The plaster walls have been covered with wood paneling and wallpaper by the previous owner.

There is no hope of matching the wallpaper. I also don't want to tear the wallpaper because I don't want the mess and expense of replacing it. So that means not ripping down the current laminate backsplash. The wallpaper/paneling covers the kitchen and dining room... a large area.

I have found in this house that it is best to leave it alone if possible. The previous owner did a lot of things that look good to cover something bad.

I am leaning towards putting the Wilsonart exactly the same as the current laminate. I know it will probably look weird, but do people really notice a backsplash?

If I choose the right pattern do you think I can get by with it as is?

Or do I attempt to tile over the laminate?

Above the cooktop the laminate takes a dip back about an inch or two. If I was to tile, I would have to fill that in some how.

Thanks in advance for your advice!
