Consider what you like and buy it THEN find a place -- that is one way to do it...consider mirrors, family pictures, landscapes, abstracts, etc...

One thing I learned is to get them bigger than you think they need to be. I rarely notice anything that looks too big on a wall--it typically makes me think 'wow' that really makes the room/wall/look.

Consider your budget but don't buy small due to budget, go with an alternative instead.

I like pairs of big framed prints hung side by side over a bed, couch, console table, etc.

A neat site is below, which I think work better on small areas such as in a hallway, over a table grouping, etc. Some on this site will die for the rooster one...

I am finally getting around to doing something about my blank walls in my new house. We have been busy working on the landscaping (5 acres) and am just now getting to finishing up the inside. I am good with major stuff (furniture, floors,
appliances, paint etc. I am NOT so good with the little stuff
(where to place artwork, nik naks, etc.) I am open to any help! I like warm tones. My floors are deep cherry (Brazilian hardwood 6 inch plank, my colors are copper,gold,
cranberry, some black and a touch of leaf green. I like wall shelves, etc. help please!

Just a thought -- consider adding a couple of tall thin buffet lamps to your pretty buffet in the breakfast area ..... always nice to have a secondary lighting option .....

Have you looked at the living rooms/family rooms thread in the Gallery for inspiration? There's tons of it there!

If you have a Tuesday Morning nearby, you might want to check out their artwork. Ours had several of Nicole Etienne's artwork - I remember mostly the fruits (pears, orange, apple.) Very pretty. I have no more wall space left, otherwise, I would have picked up a couple.

Sometimes I draw a mental line around the area that needs to be filled in to help with my wall decisions. Then it is amazing, but any old thing thrown in there will look good. On your picture I first drew my white line, then I filled it in with shapes.

Have you given any thoughts of add molding for chair rail and to create panels? One thing it does allow you to do is add accent color or wallpaper/fabrics in panels, also because they become instant frames, you may be able to get by w/smaller artwork you place in them.

I also agree with the suggestion of buying bigger pieces - more bang for the $$.

My best friend is a decorator and her motto these days is "less is more". She is a big fan of beautiful oil paintings from China. They are awesome and you can also get them on ebay for a bargain.
