Sautee some onions in a bit of oil ( one small...1/2 cup chopped in 1 T oil) until very soft but not browned.
Add a can of tomato paste, fill the can with cider vinegar and add that, add 2/3 cup brown sugar. Stir and simmer.
If you like it hotter, add some ground red chilis, add more sugar if you like it sweeter, add the juice of a lime if you want a bit of an "island" flavor.....and if you like it smokey, add a few drops ( be careful....a little goes a long way!) of liquid smoke.
If you need to thin it down (w hy???) add coke, wine, Jack Daniels or beer.

Linda this is just a friend LOL He's twice my age but we have a lot in common. I'm still with the "ugly" guy who IS a meat eater.... Made sweet and sour chicken balls from the recipe I got here about a year ago and he had 3 helpings last night.... so he's def. not a vegetarian! He eats anything, so not sure if that's a compliment to my cooking or not. He even ate my chocolate chip cookie flops (I've never had Sol's brown sugar recipe fail me until today they were all flat... I'm sure it's my fault)! I had to scrape the things off the parchment paper! I just put them in a bowl of milk and ate them with a spoon!

This is the Finger Lickin Sauce I use on Spare Ribs.
Don't know if it is what you want, for the Meatballs.

LOU'S : FINGER LICKIN BARBECUE SAUCE

1/2 cup of Bullseye or Krafts Original Barbecue Sauce
1/2 cup of Ketsup
1/2 teaspoon of Mustard
¼ teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning
1/3 Teaspoon of Garlic Powder, Onion Powder
An Italian pinch of Cloves , Basil and Oregano
Black Pepper - to taste.
2 tablespoons of Brown Sugar and Maple or Pancake Syrup
2 Heaping tablespoons of Grape Jelly and Strawberry Jam
Smooth out the Jelly and Jam with a fork and mix well.

This may sound like overpowering sweetness but it is not.
It is a Sweet and Sour mix.

I pretty much do the same as Linda but I use canned tomato sauce instead of the paste.

3 TBSP butter
1/4 cup onion
1 cup tomato sauce
1 cup cider vinegar
1 tsp coarse salt
1 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper ground hot chile flakes
1/8 tsp Tabasco or other hot sauce

Melt butter, Add onions and saute until soft but not brown. Mix in the rest and simmer about 25 minutes until slightly reduced.

Sue's is also really good . Just leave out the Worcestershire

SAUCE:
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 cup minced fresh onion
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup tomato paste
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 3/4 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring
1 teaspoon Jim Beam whiskey (I use more)
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper -- coarse
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon paprika

To make the ribs, cut each large rack of ribs in half so that you have 4 half-racks. Sprinkle a light coating of salt and a more generous portion of coarse pepper over the top and bottom of each rack. Wrap the ribs in aluminum foil and bake in a preheated 300 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours.

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium/high heat. Sauté the onions for 5 minutes or until they start to brown. Add the remaining ingredients and bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/4 hours, uncovered, or until sauce thickens.

Thank you. I made the following recipe last night and I'm pretty happy with it, but I am also going to make one of the recipes posted here as well. Just have to decide which one!

SWEET AND SAVORY GRILLING SAUCE
Makes about 2 cups

This easy, no-cook sauce falls into that general realm of sweet and-pungent tomato-based sauces generically known as "barbecue sauce."

* 1 1/2 cups thick tomato sauce
* 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
* 1 tablespoon molasses
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
* 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari, or to taste
* 1 teaspoon each: paprika, chili powder, dry mustard, garlic powder, and dried oregano

Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well. Cover and let stand for at least an hour to allow the flavors to combine.

MY ALTERATIONS: I followed the recipe exactly except...

I also added a teaspoon of onion powder and a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar. I used syrup instead of honey (and no, not the butter or blueberry flavored syrup LOL), though I debated heavily over whether or not to use half syrup and half honey. I also only used ONE tablespoon of soy sauce because it's incredibly salty. Didn't add any liquid smoke yet, but I may. It is VERY GOOD..... I'm really happy with it! I also simmered it for about 20 minutes just to help combine the flavors even though it says it's a no cook.

And Sub Fruit Jelly and Jam like in my recipe. Strawberry!
The fruit give an altogether gooder flavor. lol
