hey. i heard this was a great resource for people who want to really learn a lot about cooking. do any of you know some other good places that i should check out on the internet?

highalttransplant - we aren't going to be able to make you happy today and I understand why but please don't go looking for problems where none exist either. The real problem is that you jumped into a recipe you didn't understand upfront and then, rather than postponing it, you went ahead. And then when msdonnie and annie gave you the proper instructions within just a few minutes, you disputed their advice and went ahead and did it your way rather than follow their advice. We have all been there and done that and yes, it is frustrating, but it serves no purpose to blame or question the validity of the recipe or the assistance offered by the other posters. For future reference, understand that needing to make extra brine for a recipe has absolutely nothing to do with the safety of the recipe or whether or not it should be trusted. Extra brine may be needed for any number of reasons beyond the recipe author's control - the size of your cukes, the size of the slices, the way you fill the jars, the way you measure, etc. etc. etc. And making an additional batch of brine, as it is called for in the recipe in use, does not alter the safety of the product in any way. It is just more of the same stuff. This need has been discussed here often and is discussed at NCHFP and last I looked in the front section of BBB etc. books. And unless it is a recipe you have made before and so know that extra brine will be needed and made a note to yourself about that, it is not a batch you make ahead to have on hand. You fill the numbers of jars that you can, seal and process them, keep the rest of the pickles hot in the pan and whip up a second batch of brine in another pan then fill and process those jars. Re: slipping stitches, generally stitches are slipped purlwise except when specified or doing decreases where they are worked right away after being slipped, like the SSK. Slipping purlwise maintains the correct mount of the stitch for the the next row. When you slip a stitch stitchwise, it is twisted, which is useful in some cases like decreases. The pattern may not have specified the way to slip because people knit differently. Combined knitting or eastern knitting will twist stitches so the way you slip would depend on how you work it on the next row. Incidentally I think that Annie Modesitt who designed this scarf has promoted awareness of different knitting styles, which is great because some knitters have been criticized unfairly for doing it the "wrong" way. Well, you guys aren't very modest now are you. I think this is one of the better places, which is why I joined, but I ran into a couple others over the last few days. Have either of you seen Recipe Secrets or http://www.mydailymoment.com/food_and_recipes/ where I get daily emails?

Okay, so I just checked it out and frankly, I'm not impressed. IMHO, Waaay too much advertising and too little content.

I have used www.allrecipes.com for years and really like it. Check it out. It's a different type of website than this one.

I don't know any other Website that has wonderful recipes,cooking tips, and humor (when things go wrong), and all the Love and Friendship we have!!! LOL Diana

Cooking.com does not have as wide a range of subjects but can tell little difference otherwise.The same with Americas Test Kitchen.

If I'm looking for a recipe, I like Allrecipies. If I have a question about anything, I come here.

I visited the MyDaily Moment food and recipe website.

Sure, there's lots of advertising but I don't think it's any more than the other big recipe sites. It's actually better designed than most of the other recipe sites. I also like the way it organizes options for getting to recipes.

Of course, it doesn't have the fully dimensional quality of GardenWeb's Cooking forum. I'm sure any poster can get just about any recipe here, along with opinions, options, techniques, and so much more. Including an occasional slap on the wrist or, worse, slap in the face.

I suppose I, too, am being a little cynical in that I'm waiting for "the connection".
