Source of CHEAP good rugs

If the thought of used rugs doesn't freak you out, check with your local rug cleaning companies. Some of them will sell rugs that left for cleaning and never picked up for the cost of the cleaning. (it probably depends on state law)

I have an appointment tomorrow to see several kilims and dhurries :)

Please post back and let us know how the selection was. I can't imagine leaving a great rug at the cleaners, but you never know someone's circumstances. Did you have to call several cleaners to find one with "left behind" rugs?

Check with the closest Lowes. They have relatively reasonable home delivery, and carry a variety of potting mixes. You could also look into a good light-weight aluminum hand truck, and public transportation.

You can get mung beans out of the bulk bins at major supermarkets that work great for sprouting, at vastly lower cost than mail order. If you want to be a bit more experimental, try the spice section or Indian spice section and get mustard seeds -- I haven't tried mustard seed from these sources, but I think they should work. A bit more pricy, but still probably much cheaper than mail order, hit a health food store and they should have bulk or packaged seeds for sprouting, in many varieties.

Cheap source for worm cocoons... anyone use them?

eaglesgarden: unless you are going to keep them indoors, I'd skip the cocoons this year. They'll hatch in your outdoor bin, but they probably won't mature before the first freeze. Even if you take measures to insulate and feed your outdoor bin over the winter, I think starting with a pound of worms now will give you better results. There are reliable worm sellers offering worms for $32-35 per pound including shipping. One farm offers a half pound starter pack of bed run worms for $20 shipped, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know if they are reliable. Have you checked craigslist and freecycle for a local source? Do you know anyone who has an old compost pile or owns horses? The bottom of an old pile of manure is almost sure to have red wigglers. I'm not familiar with the worm farm you mention. I like that they ship the cocoons with a fair amount of vermicompost. Their list of advantages to starting with cocoons is reasonable. If you don't need the outdoor rug until next weekend, I'd try Overstock dot com. Every time I've ordered rugs from them, I get them in 3 and one time, 4 days. Then again, I don't know where Overstock originates/what state, so maybe they are right here in Calif and that's why I get rugs so quickly? But they have a wonderful selection of outdoor rugs with shipping never being over $2.97.

I found them because they are the ones that cleaned my rugs.

People take them to be cleaned and then dunno why they don't come back.

The selection was - for me - mediocre. None of the rugs were colors I was willing to live with. I do not like the current brownish greens, ochre and other "muddy" colors.

Seriously. :) I got all excited thinking we had another source. I fell in love with this rug and I dont know how to find it. Darn that pinterest!!!!!!

My guess is they find something new, decide they like the bare floor for a change, at least for now, or move. But that does seem like a big thing to forget at the cleaners.

I found a great buy on a clearance rug at Macy's, but most of my other rugs came from Home Goods. Kevin has said great things about the DUMP for rugs, but they are just far enough from me that I don't wander in there. I wouldn't have thought of cleaners.

I got a wool 5x8 area rug for my bedroom from overstock.com for about $120. It's not a fantastic quality or anything (sheds like crazy, actually), but it feels good, has a design I like, and did the job for what was within my budget. I know many people hate shopping online because you can't get a precise color match, but if you don't mind it being within a range, you should be fine. Also, if the color is wrong (the first one I ordered was), they have a free return shipping policy with no penalty. And all orders are only $3 shipping anyway, so it wasn't really an issue. It's not perfect, but if you keep your eye on something and wait for special deals (and I guarantee your email inbox will be inundated with them), you can get something decent for a good price.

Years ago, when life was extremely stressful and we were moving, building and my mother was dying (and I had tight work deadlines), I took a Pendelton Blanket that I loved to the cleaners and completely forgot about it. When I did finally remember it, maybe a year later, I could have slapped myself.

Boop, I would be very wary of that eBay seller--- the rug pictured is neither antique nor Aubusson, s/he is not merely stretching the truth here. While you may love it, you should always have any expensive rug examined by a professional before you purchase or buy from a reputable dealer.

kswl, how do you know it is not from the 20's? I would never spend that much on a rug anyway, just curious. I don't have that kind of money for a rug. Now if it was $1,000 I might buy it and I wouldn't be worried about if it really was an antique or not, I would buy it just because i liked it.

The strict definition of antique is something 100 years old or older. I know that the term has been changed through use to encompass anything with age but "vintage" would be the correct term for it. Also, with rugs/ carpets, there are many truly antique ones for sale and that implies certains dyes and knotting techniques and patterns--- some no longer used. It could certainly be from the 1920's.

Aubusson rugs did/do not have the pile yours shows in the picture, and a close up shows that the pile is not very dense, which means it won't wear well and was not of really good quality to begin with.

It's very striking and I see the appeal :-) However, I think they are asking that much for the rug based on both the size and unusual nature of the color combination, not the quality or provenance.
