How vinyl 'wood' looks next to real wood (pic)

I posted this in the Home Decorating Forum, but thought some of you might like to know how my flooring experiment turned out.

I decided on sheet vinyl in a wood pattern for my new laundry alcove, but worried about how the floor would look up against real (old) wood. I'm very pleased with the result! Here's a picture. The vinyl floor was just put in yesterday, and we have yet to install the strip that will join the two floors.

The alcove is in a rather dark corner, so most of the time the floor doesn't look as bright as it does in this picture. So I think that helps, too. But overall, I'd say "not bad at all."

I really don't see the appeal of the wood look ceramic tile, but it must be popular, because everybody is making it. Just me, but I wouldn't like to put it up against real wood. If you like it, then go for it. You're the one that has to live there, not anybody else.

I was afraid someone would ask me that, Auntie Ellen! LOL I got the flooring at Home Depot, and I must have burned out a few brain cells staring at the different patterns, because all I can remember is that it was a premium grade. However, I'll probably be back in HD today, and I'll get an answer for you. As for what's underneath, it's heavy plywood. The old floor was rotting badly so we took it off.

Either match the hardwood or go back to carpet. Since this is a rental, you will want to stick with the cheapest, easiest floor to replace = carpet. And be OK with the traditional idea that rental flooring has a life span of 7 years. Yes. In 7 years you will need new flooring. Only hardwood or stone will get you away from that concept. In a cold climate, wood is better than stone. But again this isn't going to come cheap. If you need cheap and warm, then carpet is your best option.

OK...now to the MEAT of the issue. By 'rugs' I assume you mean wall-to-wall carpet. Ok. That means you have a house that has a second floor (can we assume wood joists for the second floor?) that has been BUILT to handle carpet. Carpets are light. They HIDE tremendous amounts of errors that the builders caused when building the house. At this point I would ASSUME the upstairs needs strengthening BEFORE tiles can be installed. Bathrooms are different. They have extra support because they are full of heavy things (tubs, showers, sinks, cabinetry). That means the bathroom floors are strong enough to handle tile. The rest of the upstairs is NOT strong enough for tile (if you have concrete then you can ignore this thread). Tiles are HEAVY. They will cause normal wooden subfloors to bend. Tiles don't bend...they crack. Their grout cracks. Then the pop up. Now you have a HUGE mess. The installer will have to do the math for the joists + subfloor thickness. That math will tell him/her how much THICKER the upstairs subfloor has to be. You will then pay for the new plywood for the upstairs. You will pay for that plywood to be installed (can be $2/sf for material + labour). Now you can install the tile. Tiles normally sit 3/4" thick once installed. That is VERY THICK compared to your carpet. Now the subfloor thickness is added to that. It is possible the upstairs floors will rise by 1" - 1.5". That means your stairs are going to get messed up. And now we have a BIG expensive problem. And that's just for the stairs. Imagine how big of a step down you will have into the bathroom. And the doors will have to be taken down and trimmed. If you want an easy to care for surface, you should look at laminate or vinyl plank flooring. Tiling the second story of a home can be VERY expensive. So expensive that most people do NOT try it. Be VERY aware of what you ask of your house. It was NOT built for tile upstairs. It was built for carpets...The stairs could be a nightmare you never ever want to experience. Their costs are extreme. Having to 'fix' a stair that is out of code can double, or even triple the cost of the project. No. I am not kidding. We've seen $15K spent on bring the stairs up to code in a situation like this. And then you have to pay to have a floor put on them.

That's a great choice. Vinyl flooring has really come a long way. One of the neighbors redid her kitchen and hallway in vinyl flooring and it was really hard to tell it wasn't real ceramic.

For your laundry alcove, the vinyl is perfect.

Water spills will not be an issue and it looks great!

That looks great and I'm sure installation was a breeze compared to laying a wood floor. I wouldn't mind that in my laundry room and bath off the kitchen, the vinyl needs to be replaces and we already have wood floors in the rest of the house. I'll go look at the other thread about it. We just replaced most of our carpeting (just not the bedrooms) with vinyl flooring that looks like wood. Unless you really look, no one can tell at first glance that it isn't wood. We are very happy with it. SO easy to keep clean and take care of.

I love the look of your vinyl next to the real wood. I would like to replace all of my carpeting with vinyl planks. Some of what I have seen online looks just like wood. Angel nor calif - would you tell me what type of vinyl flooring you used, and did you put it in a living room or dining room?

I have a flagstone tile "Look" vinyl in my kitchen and a square faux tile vinyl in the bathroom..when I first had them put in a friend couldn't believe they weren't real tile..she had to "touch" it to believe it..
