Speaking of storm alerts...

Thinking of radios for snow alert messages, instead of TVs which are so reliant on cable systems, etc.....I was sitting in the hot tub the other day, watching the snow fall outside, and mentioned that it would be nice to have a radio in the room for music.

Then, we both remembered that the only radio we have in the house is an old electric one in the kitchen, that is mounted under a cabinet.

Both of us remembered when we had transistor radios all over the house.

Is there anyone outside of Florida who still has a transistor radio lying around?

No old fashioned transistor radios here - but we have 2 Grundig emergency radios. It only takes a few cranks of the handle and it will operate for an hour or more. One of mine also has little adaptors that plug into your cell phone so that you can charge that with the crank. Now you can buy them at Target, LLBean and many other places.

We do, here in Kansas. This is tornado country! LOL! We have two in the basement for stormy weather. DH has one out in the garage too (detached from the house) just in case. (in case of what, I do not know)

I agree with earlier poster :Stay away from any product that is under the umbrella of Connect America. I used Medical Alert - one of their products - they own many, approximately 10 products- including Guardian on call for ex- tried both the mobile & in- home unit - not only do they not perform as advertised ( not able to communicate into mobile - so they can not talk to you nor you to them -so not able to determine if there is really a problem or if you're just testing, so for ex, they call emergency #s just for the test-those of you who pay for EMS coming should beware-when I complained about this they say it's because dispatchers are doing job extra well-hard to imagine a more pathetic answer). the in home stationary unit can't pick up a voice in the next room, despite claims that they can do that within 100 feet - there's incompetence on every level- and I figured out how to reach executive office -basic and essential info which i repeatedly provided even to higher ups was repeatedly recorded Incorrectly (existence & location of lock box, phone numbers, protocol of who should be called in what order, preferred hospital, the list goes on) and whenever a mistake was pointed out they attribute to customer instructions as excuse. They went so far as to send a tech to the home but failed to tell tech which system we were using - turns out tech had never seen it before. Amazing they're still in business. Plus if one pays over phone with cc when you get device the " contract" tries to make you sign off on allowing them to directly extract $ from your cc or checking acct- no alternative is offerred- they never disclose that they are keeping your credit card on file when you call - VERY sneaky. I should have listened to my intuition - when shopping around I was asked what other companies I was looking at & they trashed them with inaccurate info - which wa offensive. Someone I know used them so I let that trump my better judgement but I'm warning all of you -stay away. Would also like to know if DS Smallwood got the touch & talk unit...does no further info indicate a problem with that product?

I agree with Azzalea. The hype is enormous. If they were predicting three feet of snow, I could see it, but not for 18 inches. I am so grateful to be just south of the storm, nevertheless. I'd be happy to never see snow again. Our weather reporters have invented a new word this year --plowable. "Expect a plowable amount of snow." Good grief. Anyway, I hope those in the NE are hunkered down and have plenty of bread, milk and eggs. Good luck, it does sound like a heck of a lot of snow is on the way. Too bad for anyone who had planned to fly out this weekend.

Got a call at work the other day. It was a recording telling me that the warranty on my car was about to expire, but I now had the opportunity to purchase an extended warranty. If I was interested, I should press 1. So, because I was bored and wanted to have some fun, I pressed 1. Soon a gentleman came on the line and started right out with, "May I have the make, model, year, and license number of your vehicle?" I replied, "Which one?" He said, "What?" I replied, "You said you want the make, model, year, and license number of my vehicle, and I asked you which vehicle you needed the information on." He said, "The one that you want the extended warranty for." I said, "Well, there's a couple thousand of them." He said, "Whaaaat?" I replied, "I said there's a couple of thousand vehicles." He sputtered. I said, "You've called the State of California. The State owns many, many vehicles. Did you want the information on all of them?" He hung up. It made my day go by a little faster...

Joplin is about the same size as Ames. I just cannot imagine the town being leveled like that. I don't understand why houses in tornado areas don't all have basements or storm cellars. When I moved to Iowa I specifically looked at houses with basements. My heart goes out to all those who have lost their homes.

Transistors are used in just about all consumer electronics nowdays. They replaced the vacuum tube decades ago.

To be prepared for a power outage get one of those cheapo radio alarm clocks that have a battery backup. The integrated units were invented so that the clock didn't start flashing 12:00 if there was a power interruption while you slept thus making one late for work or appointments.

A reminder for anyone who does not know this........If you are keeping a landline for emergencies during power outages make sure you have a corded phone. A cordless phone still needs electricity to operate and will be useless during an outage.

I have one that only runs on batteries, a tiny one. I haul it along on my bicycle journeys. Check radio shack. It's where I got mine.

We have had the exact same radio Mcmann linked. DH bought it years ago, for taking on vacation with us. We like it so much we've bought another in a metallic red. We also have a Radio Shack DX-375 and it is wonderful too.
DH collects the old tube radios and I have no idea how many we have that are electric, but if power goes out we are covered! LOL

DD and DH were talking one summer when power went out where DD and the boys live for something like 6 hours. She was so glad it was summer and not winter. She said she was a bit worried because they were in a tornado watch. No computer, no landline phone, (only cordless) she had her cell though. DH said well turn on the radio and listen! She told him "ummmm Dad, I don't have a radio" He was dumbfounded!
