What is your budget, and what type of wallpaper are you looking for (style, period, etc.)?

Well we don't want silk or gold, just good quality, lovely colors and designs. We only have a small area to paper. The style I guess, I like floral type designs, classic patterns - not modern, not arts and crafts style. I'm not a designer, so not really sure that is an adequate answer?

Here are some websites, I can't do a hyper link in the body of the message, but I bought our's online and just love it. The background is black (which is luscious to me!) with large florals.

Thibaut and Schumacher are my favorites. You want paper, not vinyl, for the best colors and classic designs. Hopefully you have a retailer in your area that carries quality wallpapers.

If you are doing a small enough area to do made to order you could look at Adelphi Paperhangings for 18th and 19th c, documentary wallpapers, and Paul Montgomery Studios for hand painted scenics and asian-inspired botanicals, and deGournay for hand blocked historic papers and modern botanicals. Paul Montgomery and deGournay are out of reach for most everyone ($500 a panel: typ. 36 x 9'ish, to start). However they are fun to look at and could provide inspiration.

You could also look up Florence Broadhurst--her papers have just been reintroduced. I don't know who makes them...maybe Cole and Sons.

I don't know what qualifies as timeless. but we bought middle of the road wallpapers in about 1992 and after living with them since then we still love most of them and are only starting to even think about replacing a couple of borders. We need to repaint, but the papers are still in good shape so in at least one room we're going to repaint without repapering.

If you're lucky you'll have a retailer who actually stocks some good stuff; otherwise just plough through the books and see what appeals to you. It's so individual; at least, it must be since there are so many patterns that also don't appeal to me! Make a note of book name, page number, and pattern number for reference.

To me there are basically three levels: high end "haute couture" hand printed etc including the non-pre-pasted, middle of the road nice papers, and then stuff that is so pedestrian it is stocked at the big box stores. Maybe there are big boxes that stock better quality, but not around here. I can't find anything in the pedestrian category, but have never been unable to find something I like in the middle of road level.

I've linked below to a site that offers the easiest browsing I've found for middle of the road papers, organized by book so it is easy to maybe find them to look at in person in stores. On line mostly doesn't begin to capture the real paper. Discountdecorating.com is another site that is relatively easy to search by theme. However, I do prefer to shop at my local stores even though I don't get the discount prices just because I value having them available to see locally, and buying on line obviously isn't going to support that.

One warning: when you find a paper you really like, act quickly to at least enquire about stock, because they pull books and patterns without warning. I spent three days in January looking at books and choosing patterns, only to find that when I went back to order a week later, the books had been pulled. Conversely, if you don't find something you like, wait a couple of months and look again, there will be new stuff out. Finally, if you have a discontinued pattern you want to hunt down, type the pattern number into a search engine.

Another vote for Thibault - I've had Augustine in sun-baked red in my dining room for years, and it's wonderful.

I suggest that you look for the thread with house photos of my3dogs' house. She uses several wallpapers that you might like.

Another vote for Thiabut - 3 dogs beat us to it. I was a no wallpaper gal - A friend found 2 Thiabut one for DR one for a troubled upstairs bath - I caved and have been very pleased.

Perhaps a Thiabut for DR will solve your paint color issue?

By the way I have to amend my statement above to add that I have turned to the on line sellers when I need something that the local retailers can't get, and have nothing but good things to say about the service the on line companies provide. So I don't hold anything against them; I just want to support and preserve my local sources when I can.

And I should also clarify that I guess the papers I'm referring to are vinyls, really. I am not sure I've even used a "real" paper. But like I say, we have lived with them happily, and they didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Here's a site with about a bazillion links to companies with seriously amazing wallpapers; it's called "Historic Wallpaper Resources" but there's actually a wide range of styles most people would just consider "classic" (damasks, say) as well as the serious reproductions. I LUST for Bradbury & Bradbury, Carter & Co., and Trustworth Studios!
