Sharing photos of TV/entertainment unit DH built

We got the TV months ago, but since most TV stands are made to house the typical components and typical size speakers, we couldn't find the right stand or entertainment center for it, so my husband built it. The corner is the only place the TV can go, and he wanted to keep the tall speakers and center speaker (3 other speakers are elsewhere in the room). And, it needed to fit the amplifier, Xbox, satellite dish receiver, and the new Home Theater PC (a computer that runs everything). And it needed to have enough space for adequate ventilation (DH built a series of fans for the back of the cabinet). So custom-made was the only way to go.

It's made of black melamine with cherry trim and smoked glass doors on the front. It has hinged doors on the sides for storage of DVDs, games, headphones, Xbox controllers, etc.

And best of all, now that it's done, maybe he'll get around to making the trim for the doors and windows!

Wow, that's perfect for your room and all your components . . . and good looking, too! The fans in the back were a great idea! BTW, your floor is beautiful!

I think the outdated look is the one where the entertainment center is too big for the room. When it overwhelms everything in the room and is the center of attention. That "look" is outdated but the actual entertainment centers are not IMO. Here are a couple pics of mine. It's huge. But the room is huge and is open to the kitchen and the ceiling is 18' tall so the room isn't overwhelmed by the furniture's mass. I've included a full view of my room just to illustrate that there are other more important things to look at in the room than just the entertainment center. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

We have something similar to yours in our basement family room.....only an entire wall and deep as well. We have a center opening like yours for a tv that is not quite as low as yours, and 3 deep drywall shelves on each side. We bought a 40" tv....couldn't fit anything larger and it works fine. For now I have a combination of books, photographs and a few odds and ends sitting among them. Not the ideal situation, but it's not in our main living area (we don't have a tv in the main living area). You could always put deep baskets in the two openings on the right (for blankets, pillows, magazines, etc). I like Robo's idea above.

I’m not surprised you had a hard time selling. Entertainment centers are not really useful or in style anymore. I think flat screen TVs did them in. I just can’t see how this can be good for you. Donate it and get a long credenza for under your tv. If you’re really committed to keeping it, I don’t recommend chalk paint. It’s ok for small pieces that are more rustic and where seeing the brush strokes and having the matte chalk texture is ok. But I think chalk paint would look terrible on that unit. You can paint it the same color as the wall (taking the current finish off and using real paint, not chalk paint), and maybe it’ll not stand out quite so much.

While I have nothing against Wayfair, it's not where I'd look for a significant focal point of your family room. In our area, having something custom built will mean a wait of at least a year and likely longer. There are also some big differences in quality of workmanship among the few custom furniture builders, and most focus on rustic looking pieces that would be at home in a fishing cabin. Just kidding...I adore mine, even though he's a bit clueless about DIY projects. So am I. :)

Parma42, I wish I had the answer! That is a gorgeous job.
My DH (and he is very D to me) is an economist, and barely knows which end of a hammer to hold, but he sure can hold his own at a dinner party! One of two is pretty good...
I did have a man in my life about a hundred years ago who could do both...brilliant with DIY and adorable at dinner. Unfortunately, he was also a drunk.
Ah, well. It's all about the choices, isn't it!

Thanks everyone! I'll be sure to pass along your compliments to my hubby.

He really is a talented guy. I'm continually impressed by the things he is able to do. He's the type who is good at whatever he tries. In the 18 years I've known him, I've seen him do welding, auto mechanics, appliance repair, computer programming, very complicated plumbing, carpentry, electrical work and electronics (he built the circuit board that runs the fans in the media center), woodworking of all kinds, tree cutting, landscaping, small engine repair, flooring, chain link fence installation, masonry, earthmoving/excavating, stock market trading and other investing, brewing and winemaking, and on and on. About the only thing he can't do is cook. (Thank goodness, or he'd have no "use" for me!)

And no, he doesn't have any brothers. :-P

In the box cushion thread were those your stone benches in front of the firepit? I love those. I will need to check our your deck too. I am lucky enough to have a very handy DIY DH too- the list could fit my guy but the wine making and brewing, and he thinks he can cook a few things.( not)
