vintage silver headboard

I have a iron bed with a copper colored finish . It has a lot of detail in it . I have

had this bed for 7 years and am getting bored with it . My DH does'nt want to

get a new one because it was quite expensive and does'nt think we should

replace it just because I'm bored . In our new house I wanted to do the bedroom

in kind of a art deco / old hollywood style with lots of silvers , metallics , etc.

I was wondering about painting the bed ? I read where you can paint it grey and

then use a vintage silver metallic glaze over the paint . I think it will look good

but am nervous about destroying a very nice expensive bed , LOL . Have any of

you used this vintage silver glaze ? Do you have photos you could share ?

Do you have a picture of the iron we may see? Do you mean it truely is iron that may rust or metal made to look like iron and copper?

I believe it's solid iron because it's so heavy but it could be any kind of solid
metal . It also has wrapped corners at the foot board . I took a picture but do
not know how to upload it .

Eileen - I can't tell you how much I admire the way you've kept yourself and your collections together through the difficult times you've had. Throughout your various places your sure decorator's touch has created such pretty spaces, and this bedroom is lovely, especially its "picture" walls. I love the mix of styles and frames; it says "true collector" to me. Could you tell us about the pencil/pen sketches of the two rooms in the final photo you posted? Were all the pics on that wall done by the same artist? You? Oh, and I like the headboard also! But I wouldn't mind a solid wood in a walnut or espresso color, either.

Hoyamom, copy away! Yes, the color palette in our rooms are essentially the same. I think it would be perfect for your chaise! Perhaps the most invalid analogy ever: "It's like when a soccer mom with 5 kids goes into a car dealership and the salesman keeps trying to sell her sport's cars when she keeps telling him she wants a mini van". More accurate analogy: It's like when a soccer mom with 5 kids goes into a car dealership and the salesman keeps trying to sell her sport's cars when she keeps telling him she wants a mini van. but she wants it to look like a sports car, get the mileage of a Prius, the longevity of a Volvo, the ten year warranty included..... for the price of a used Chevy compact,. The other difference is she may have the "good grace" to realize it's not possible. Politely stated, the above beds are West Elm and Ethan Allen respectively. I would suggest jumping by kiddies on either is not a great idea, and both will be in the vicinity of a grand. They will not jiggle as they are the entire bed, versus a headboard bolted to a hollywood frame. I would suggest the first, to avoid the "matchy matchy" which is to drown a room in dark brown furniture, in this case a dresser, two side tables and bed, all the same. The warm golden tone far more updated , especially in consideration with green......... I'll politely suggest a hardware change on the brown furniture should that be an issue.

Oh, that's a gorgeous classic piece. I wouldn't paint it - just brighten it up with some glam silver bedding and other accessories if that's the look you want. Maybe even go for one of those mosquito netting canopies to soften the look.

That is kind of like the look I had in my last house when I bought the bed . I
am kind of bored with that look and want to go with something different this
time . Plus I don't think the copper will look very good with silver bedding .

That is a very gorgeous bed! I disagree about copper not looking good with silver bedding...I see metals combined in jewelry all the time and it can be stunning. In fact, in the picture the bedding looks kind of silvery already (at least on my monitor).

Even though I know what you mean about being bored, I personally would not mess with the finish. It's really lovely just the way it is.

BTW, LOVE that you are getting an indoor pool in your new house! I hope you'll show us pics of your home when it's done.

Sorry about the construction mess - you know how it is . As you can see I
am still a few months away from moving in but am currently deciding on paint colors and I wanted to go with soft greys , blues and whites in the master . The comforter on the bed now is a satiny pink color and it does go well with the copper finish . Just thought the vintage silver would look nice and bring out the details in this bed . I will be spending a great deal of time here trying to figure things out over the next few months , so I'm sure you
will see lots of photos - LOL . Thanks again faye

Your room is going to look gorgeous. I can't wait to see it, as I LOVE looking at lux fem glamour like the old movie stars had.

If you do decide to refinish the bed, I just had the thought that maybe you could take it to a car painting shop and have them electrostatic spray and bake it with a lovely vintage silver finish. That would be a more durable finish than doing it yourself. Also your DH might be more open to a new color if he knew it was a tough automotive finish (if he's anything like my DH, HA).

If it was me, i'd paint it. It's a gorgeous piece and would fit in nicely with your new theme - just needs to be a new colour. However, I would change everything else first and make sure it really doesn't work as is.

Going along Tradewind's idea...you can also take it to a powdercoater - they have a book of about a thousand different colors that are amazing - this stuff is as tough as nails!!
Beautiful headboard - go with your vision!

My DH gets rims done for cars done by powdercoating - it is amazing. He is a car freak.....says the rims make or break the car - not talking 20's here thou!! LOL

How about checking with your local car/automobile painting centers -- and see if they will re-do it for you!

I'd love to see that headboard in silver!

First finish the house, or at least your room. Then see if the bed needs to be painted or not.

I just painted a iron golden chandelier with the product you mentioned;
It worked wonderfully well.

Another changable option could be ribbon wrapped around in velvet, satin, brocade, metalic, or drape fabric over or through, or hang soft pillowy poof, or make a headboard using the iron as a frame, you can then change with ease, seasonal etc.....

Thanks for all the advice . It is a very heavy piece and if I am going to get it done then I want to do it when we are moving in . Great idea about the powder
coating - I will check on the cost of that .
