? regarding black Cohosh

Does Black Cohosh raise blood pressure? I recently started taking it, and my bp jumped 20 points! both systolic and diastolic. I am on a lot of other meds, but I think that Black Cohosh is the culprit.

Well, I thought I'd say more about side affects of Black Cohosh. I am an herbal person, I tend, until now, to get less side affects from herbs than western meds... BUT this is the side affects that I got from taking Black Cohosh. Increased sweating (and I need THAT? doing that already!) higher BP, increased heart rate and facial swelling, maybe from the raised BP? And headaches :o(
I am posting this, just in case someone else gets these side affects...

Thanks for the post.
I usually prefer herbal or natural remedies too, but I have learned that just becase something is labeled, natural or herbal, it doesn't mean that the side effects are always benign or helpful.

I have symptoms (same as my mother) of early onset Menopause. At 35 years old I've already suffered the hot flashes and night sweats and irregular menstruation. I've had the symptoms come and go since I was about 30-31 years old. A handful of years ago I suffered a false pregnancy and a Native American woman I knew told me about a combination of Soy Isoflavones and Black Cohosh (capsules) to help regulate my hormone levels. The combination brought my hormone levels back into balance within a matter of days, relieved and eliminated ALL of my pregnancy symptoms. When I started having the menopause symptoms more frequently I tried them again on the theory that if they can regulate hormones from "pregnancy" back to normal then perhaps they would help with menopausal symptoms too. I have since discovered that adding St. John's Wart to the mix also helps with the irritability that goes with it all. I've taken these together for 3 years now. I noticed a change within a matter of 2-4 days when not taken consistently. When taken consistently I have noticed that they tend to reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and night sweats (if not eliminate altogether for extended periods of time). They also tend to regulate the timing and duration of menstruation to a more consistent schedule as well as reduce cramping, fatigue, mood swings and irritability. I'm sure like with all herbal remedies there may be mixed results for everyone. But I hope the information helps and if you do decide to try it.. I hope it works wonders for you like it did for me. WANTED: fresh black walnut leaves and black cohosh leaves

A friend of mine is looking for samples of fresh black walnut leaves and black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) leaves for a study. You must be absolutely positive on the ID of the plant and be able to provide a picture of the plant when it was actively growing (just in case questions come up). The samples must be at least 50km from Guelph, ON. In exchange I can offer pregnant onion bulbils (Albuca bracteata syn. Ornithogalum caudatum), mother of thousand plantlets (Bryophyllum daigremontianum) or leaf cuttings of the giant butterwort (Pinguicula gigantea). In terms of seeds, I can offer Solanum melongena 'Striped Toga,' Job's tears (Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yeun), or Peter Pepper. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of weeks, I would guess. I've never had success with herbal remedies. I did go on bioidentical hormones for about a year, and they were helpful. I've stopped taking them, and I'm doing fine. Still getting occasional hot flashes, but my other symptoms have righted themselves. Let us know how you fare with the black cohosh. : )

capsules do work. or make a simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar) flavored with something that tastes good to you, and use that syrup to flavor your tincture. I do this all the time when my herbal clients need a yucky tasting medicine. : ) I keep rose, orange, lavender and chocolate simple syrups on hand for this.

Yeah, it sure would be nice to have some RELIABLE testing done on herbs... so you could know what to expect. My BF took some milk thistle... on the advice of his doctor and it reacted with his blood pressure medicine and formed an estrogen type chemical and gave him boobs! Luckily, his doc knew about that and wasn't surprised. I didn't know that could happen!

Only certain companies do ANY testing on herbal remedies. Its takes pharacuetical companies years to do drug testing, but there are no strict rules with herbal stuff. You really need to be careful what you buy.
As far as the estrogen goes, what happened to your husband is a documented side effect of that hormone. Environmental estrogen is a real problem for some folks. I read about a chicken farm in the UK who used estrogen pellets to caponize the birds, and the grandfather and his little granddaughter developed breasts because they ate the chicken necks. The neck is where the pellet was inserted.
