how to know menopause after hysterectomy

Hi, Everyone, This is my first post on this forum. How do you know when you are menopausal or through it when you've had a hysterectomy? I had a hysterectomy at age 33, now I'm 53 and have had the symptoms of menopause, quite severe. But how can you know when it's over? My Dr. isn't very forthcoming with information, and I have asked him. Anyone have any insight for me? TIA Nancy

I had a partial hyst at age 28, so the only things I have had to go by are the absence of premenstrual symptoms and emotional changes. When I had hormone levels checked, my estrogen was low-normal, progesterone and testosterone were low. FSH was still in normal range. I would think that at age 53, it's getting pretty close, since having even a partial hyst will usually cause an earlier menopause.

Hi ive had a full hysterectomy at 30 now only have 1 ovary after suffering from a range of perimenopasaul symptoms i went and had a blood test to check if i was in fact perimenopausal the bloods came back normal WHAT how can this be , apparently unless your hormones are going crazy at a particular time of the month it wont show up even tho u r peri so just go off your symptoms and how u feel make a record of how u feel at particular times of the month this for me is the best indicator, trusting my own body and instincts and more importantly the symptoms i get, palpatations hot sweats panic attacks crashing fatigue some days especially when i am having palpatations ,running to the loo with weak bladder al these are indicators of perimenopause hope this helps sum ladies out there ok

My mistake as I didn't see that the sweats started before the prednisone...now that is adding more to it. Did you have the bronchitis when the sweats started but weren't on the pred ? Could have been your body fighting off the infection in that case. It is a normal response. So as you say , get off the pred when you are finished and then see how you are doing in a week or 2. My Mom had bad sweats for years and years after menopause was over. She had to stop her hormones when she got breast CA. She never did get over the sweating and she passed away at 88. Hopefully this will not be the case with you. c

You ask your doctor. He can pretty much tell by the "feel" of the ovaries if they have atropied or not. Women in their fifties have babies. They may be producing fertile eggs even though they are not building up enough uterine lining to have a period. It's a complex happening. I remember one dear soul in our choir. One Sunday morning while she was getting ready to go into the church, she found out that even waaaayyyy after a year, you can have a period. Lucky for her, one of the other women had spares. Well, I had a total hysterectomy in 1986, at the age of 36, non-cancerous, but I did have an ovarian cycst and endometriosis (sp?). They took everything plus my appendix! I still went to the GYN doctor each year until about 2000. Didn't have a PAP each year, probably every other year until I went off HRT in 2005. I did have a physical vaginal exam each year (with my PCP and still do. Now they do a PAP every 3 years. Not sure where they take the tissue from but you can have endometrial cancer still. I think if you are on HRT, it would be good to continue being checked. If not, then once every 3 years shouldn't be an issue.

Boy can I tell you a sad story about dryness, with a happy ending, it's sort of embarrassing, but here goes. I was so dry my eurethria (sp) had been pulled up inside of my vagina. When I urinated it drained through my vagina. Some of it stayed inside until I stood up then it drained. I had to go to the bathroom as soon as I felt an urge or I couldn't wait. I can't count the times I have come home and run to the bathroom as soon as I got the door open, often not making it. I was wearing panty liners all the time. I thought it was the typical problem women have and have to have their bladder tacked up. Thank goodnes it wasn't. I no longer wear the pads, no problems at all. The doc prescribed estrace ointment as a topical ointment for 2 weeks out of the month. What a relief, I could have cried I was so happy to know I wasn't facing surgery, a surgery that often doesn't do any good. There are no "harmless" herbal treatments, if it solves the problem they are as dangerous as the drugs the doc prescribes. My sister is a nutritionist and she takes handfuls of pills, I tried what she recommend for my ailments nothing worked. Also her health is worse than mine.
