Granite v. Marble
Comments (6)We have Callacatta Gold in our Summer home. It's the only counter surface in the kitchen (perimeter and peninsula). We sealed it once and there is some etching, but I only notice it in direct sunlight. Because it's our Summer place it doesn't get the year round abuse, however, when we're there it probably gets more day to day wear than our year round place. For example, there's no school so the kids are strolling in and out of the house 7 days a week and we eat most meals at home. We also entertain much more there, and have frequent overnight (if not week) guests. I've never given instructions to guests or anyone else and have had only had one issue - that was when someone left a bottle of red wine out all night. It was screwtop so I didn't even notice it had been opened. When I discovered it the next morning, I was able to get rid of it and you'd never know it happened. Also, we're going to be building a new house and my husband said he definitely wants to put in marble because he loves it so much (yay!). In discussing marble with someone they mentioned etching and I said "yes, we have some etching". DH looked at me and said "We do?". :-) Anyhow, we love it and will do it again. My kids are three and six (girl and a boy). My three year old is a complete disaster when she eats pasta with red sauce, by the way and I have never stressed over it. Now on the other hand, this house is the first place where I've had stainless appliances and they drive me crazy! I feel like I am constantly cleaning up fingerprints. So go figure? For me, marble? No hassle. Stainless fridge and dw? Drives me freaking crazy! I will do anything to have a paneled DW and fridge in our new build :-) So that's my experience and I hope it helps you and anyone else considering marble....See MoreBefore, During and After
Comments (35)Great kitchen, Kelly! The wood color was a great choice--to me it's warm and inviting, and an all-round great mid-tone color. Can you specify which stain and doorstyle you used? I am looking at cabinets for my bathroom (I have granite left over). Also, I think there are a lot of people lurking here who never post and would want to know. My pre-remodel kitchen was very similar to yours, especially the color. Wasn't it great to say goodbye? Love the skylights. Fascinated by the photos of the process of building a skylight. Did your husband do it all? I ended up passing on that idea for our kitchen, but still holding out hope for a skylight the front bathroom. How crazy/hard was it to do?...See MoreBreezygirl: Question about your faucet
Comments (5)You're welcome. When my cleanup sink faucet was installed there wasn't enough room for the lever on the faucet to be installed sideways as it would hit the backsplash. It took me no time at all get used to the foreword placement. I noticed no dripping of water from my hands on the counter behind the faucet, and it was a much easier reach than had been placed to the side. (My cleanup sink is a large super single, which is very deep front to back, and I notice that it is a bit of a stretch to reach the base of the faucet even though I'm taller than average.) When my walnut island counter was finally completed, I installed the prep sink faucet facing front also not only for continuity, but also because I love the function of that placement. I think I may have sprayed my arm once or twice during the first day or so. Once in the middle of the night just recently I was too bleary-eyed to realize the faucet was positioned straight towards me and I turned it on which got my arm a little bit wet. Other than that it's very easy to get used to the forward placement, and you naturally reach for the lever without your arm out of the way. I've read about others with that same experience. I consider the placement a happy accident!...See Morehow do you seal your marble?
Comments (2)This has been a recurring issue on this forum for many years and there are great threads worth reading that give you a real feel for the pros and cons of marble (and as owners of about 110 sf of marble countertops in our kitchen, and way more than that in our master bath--floors, tub and shower surrounds, vanity counters--it's clear to us that the pros far outweigh the cons!). Take a look at these to start: Honed marble countertops 3 years later? breezygirl-question As for specifics, we and many others have used 511 Porous Plus Sealer: Porous Plus though experts like Bill Vincent have in the past suggested that the less expensive 511 Impregnator would be fine, and somewhat cheaper....See More- 12 years agolast modified: 9 years ago
