Wine storage in cabinets...what does it look like?

We will have some "bar" cabinets built. We will be running two rows of wine storage underneath the upper cabinets. I usually like the criss cross storage, but I think it is inefficient with just two rows. So, I think we will do more square storage. How does this work? Anyone have pictures? I was thinking it is nice to see the wine label. Do you have wine in a cabinet with the cork side out? Any pictures would be great.

I have googled this, but having trouble finding what I need.

How serious are you about your wine? Red wine should be stored somewhat below room temp (the cool dark cellar) and white wine below that. Storage at room temp and exposed to sunlight makes a nice display but a bad wine.

My recommendation would be to check with some of the better wine merchants in your area. They will almost certainly know of local contractors specializing in creating custom wine storage solutions. You might also consult one of the city or metropolitan oriented magazines that are probably available in your area (we have 2 or 3 in the Seattle area, so the same is probably true of your nearby metropolitan areas). Those types of magazines often carry advertising for just those types of services. Similarly, check out the major wine publications such as Wine Spectator or catalogs like the Wine Enthusiast. They often have ads for specialists in various geographic regions.

I may be the minority, but I do not put my wine out anywhere near the kitchen. My wine goes in my hallway closet where there is no heat/sun near it. I work for a wine boutique; our store wine are either in a temperature controlled room or the cool basement. If you drink the wine within ~1 month of purchasing them, I guess the warmth from the kitchen wouldn't have a big impact.

Ok, I'll be the dissenting voice here. I'm a big wine collector. I would not have storage for more than about 10 bottles in that space if any at all, UNLESS you will be constantly rotating and drinking it. Room temp and those windows facing the space will compromise the wine, making it undrinkable pretty quickly. If you are doing the beverage center like you pictured than store wine in a fridge there. I'd make the built in you've already planned purely a beverage center, coffee, wine, cocktails, whatever suits your family. Then in that wall I'd put a built in China hutch. Cabinet space below for serving platters and such and a drawer for silverware, maybe a toe kick drawer for linens. Open shelves or glass doors above for China. Or a niche above for artwork. examples

We decided to put some glass-fronted cabinets in the kitchen, but not right near the stove. Normally I keep a lot of utilitarian things near the stove and my prettier things, such as handmade pottery dishes and pretty glassware, are on another wall / hutch-style area. The things in the glass-fronted cabinets are still utilitarian because we use them almost everyday, but they are pretty, so I like putting them in a glass cab. Since a stove area is already a busy work zone, my personal opinion, for me, is that I would not like my glass-front cabs to be there. It's already a busy work zone, and adding glass cabs would make it more busy visually. As far as lighting. I wanted lighting in the glass cabinets, but if you have solid shelves with an LED light shining down form the top, the light is blocked by the uppermost shelf and doesn't illuminate all the way down. If you have glass shelves, you see the greenish edge of the glass (and I personally don't care for that). So what we came up with was to create a wooden "frame" in the dimensions of a regular shelf and then the glass company supplied the glass inserts for that. So when I am looking at the glass-fronted cabinet I am not looking at a raw/green/glass edge (I am looking at a wooden edge), and the light goes all the way down. Also, the glass fronts have no dividers, so I can adjust the shelves however I want and don't have to worry about lining up the shelves with any dividers.

Josie, yours is what I was originally picturing. I think that looks great! I am not serious about wine. We will have a wine cooler in the bar too. We have a few bottles of wine that are over $20-$30, but the rest are about $12-$15. We are not collectors!!

I also didn't want to go with the criss-cross lattice for the same reason of inefficient use of space. Here's a pictuer of what I ended up going with.

bob, where did you get your racking? Looks nice!

kelleg, how many bottles do you typically store outside of the fridge? I prefer the grid style racks myself but it might depend upon the quantity that you usually have around.

I found the racks listed at kitchensource and sent the following images to my custom RTA cabinet maker to show how the wine cabinet should be made. They ordered the wire racks I specified from their supplier and I assembled the result and installed the wire racks in the cabinet.

Josie and Berf - I love how you both have your wine stored. I wish I would have done that instead of a small message center I have in my kitchen. I told DH, when and if we ever add on the mudroom off the kitchen, I'm turning the message center into something like the two of you have. Looks great!

We just have the one row of square storage under an upper...but also have a wine fridge as well

thank you for posting this. i have changed my mind on this area of our renovations.. I 've decide now to do something similar as we had the original plan to do the criss cross storage but seems like much more room this way and i like the glass front showing the stemware.

i need to know what the diameter is for each of these boxes? are these 42 " cabinets w/ 7 wine boxes?
