Sudden joint pain in finger

I'm chalking this up to the meno rollercoaster ride, but I thought I'd post it anyway to see if anyone can relate.

About two weeks ago, the middle finger on my right hand suddenly became very painful in the joint at the base of the finger. I have never noticed any pain in this finger (or any other fingers for that matter) before now. It now hurts when I prune the plants, clean the car windows with a squeegee, anything that puts any pressure on that finger. Occasionally it throbs so intensely, like a very intense flu-like pain that passes after about a minute. I don't see any swelling, it's not tender to the touch, and I know I didn't injure it.

Does this sound familiar? Is this the beginning of something, or just one of those passing aches and pains that comes and goes and makes you wonder what's going on?

Sounds like arthritis to me.... take an aleve or aspirin... keep moving it...

Jenn -- exactly the same thing happened to me. I cut my left index finger when peeling potatoes, and shortly thereafter the pain started. This has been going on for a couple months, and now I can definitely see a protrusion on the middle joint of the finger. I'm assuming it is arthritis. I'm starting to have real sympathy for people who have widespread arthritis.

Hi Catherinet - I too had Tinnitus, the ringing and buzzing in my ears. I have done some research and found that it does happen in menopause but can also be caused by a condition known as Otosclerosis, which effects the middle ear. It has to do with bone growth on the tiny stapes bones in the middle ear. The bones prevent the middle ear bones from conducting signals going to the inner ear. There has been evidence showing that HRT can be a problem when it comes to tinnitus during menopause, among other things. Of course, it becomes more common the older we get also. Unfortunately I haven't found anything to take care of this but I thought this might be some interesting information for you anyway. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Bobbi

Log house apprentice - hand joint pains - share your experience

Hello, I am a 24 year-old apprentice to a small historical restoration company. I started this work in July. We are putting back together a log house in central Pennsylvania right now. My hands, especially the middle finger joint past the knuckle (I see it's called the proximal interphalangeal joint) and the pinky knuckle hurt everyday now. In the mornings I can't straighten the middle finger of my striking hand! I am young and never had problems with joints and bones other than once in my hip joint when I ran 4 miles with out building up to it. My hand pains must be caused by all the mallet pounding and lumber lifting. Has anybody experienced this, and how did you deal with it? How long did it take for you to heal, and did you change the way you hold tools or added soft grips to tools? I am taking off from work for a week in hopes of letting the hands heal. One of my friends, 26 years-old, told me to get gel-padded gloves and take dietary supplements glucosamine / chondroitan. I am going to see a specialist, but I would like to hear other peoples' experience with the injury.

My ring fingers are longer. no arthritis yet but... Rheumatoid Arthritis runs VERY strong in my family and according to my PCP I have an unusually high probability of developing it because I have auto-immune anemia. Now, you know I will be checking my family's fingers next time I am in Atlanta. Comparing the half of my dad's family with arthritis with my mom's half that doesn't! LOL

normally no...but this week has been a killer...my lips are chapped and hurting...and my thumbs both have splits...I usually lather on Lanolin grease I got thru Amazon and sleep in gloves...that clears it up in a couple of days...Hubby ordered four huge bottles of Amlactin for Christmas...he uses it and we sent a bottle to his Mother and gave the other ones to the kids...it doesn't work for me...I got a bottle subscribed a few years ago and hubster ended up using it...Now that its on Amazon he loves it! There is a lanolin grease called Lansinoh you can find at some drugstores and also back in the baby department at Walmart...its sold for nursing mothers...lather some of that on your hands and sleep in gloves...you'll be amazed at the results! I think every one of our bodies are different and you just have to keep searching till you find what works for you!!

I agree, sounds like old arthur is setting in..it loves the joints! My finger joints are getting those lovely knots on them. I take Advil and it seems to quiet it down to a bearable level.

Thank you for your replies. It hasn'bothered me as much the past few days, maybe because I've been too busy to notice. I've always popped this joint, somethings habitually and sometimes because it gets very stiff. I wonder if this is the result of doing that for too many years. :-(

Hello Jen,

That seems to be an arthritis. Try treating it with natural methods first and if the symptoms still persist, then that's the time you consult your doctor's advice for some meds to take in.
