I would like to hear other's opinions and experience with Provera. Thanks for any feedback, Cindy

I took Provera to fix a problem I had after I had my tubes tied. For years after my tubal ligation, I would have a period for 3 weeks, and none for 1 week. All doctors would dismiss it as my age. Anyways, a doctor put me on provera about 9 years ago and it regulated my periods almost immediately. The only complaint I have is that I gained at least 20 lbs. right away too. I was on vacation at the time I started taking provera and some of the weight gain was probably due to not watching anything I ate but I am sure that provera also contributed to some of it. Perhaps today provera is given in smaller dosages with the same results.

I saw my doctor today and he explained that Provera gives you more of an appetite. He says that Provera itself does not cause one to gain weight. I have a prescription for Provera and am debating whether to take it or not. See my other post for my explanation.

I started hrt vivelle dot .5 and prometrium for three weeks and felt no relief. Went to another ob and he put me on Premarin 1.25 and Provera. My question is, am I starting from scratch as far as the relief, or will the three weeks of the other type of hrt count for something?

robbie_florida Yes, I had your symptoms and I had done my homework to be able to ask to have Prometrium prescribed and also thyroid replacement for finally diagnosed but long suspected hypothyroidism. The bleeding of three months, but severe needing an overnight pad every hour during the last four weeks, stopped after two weeks on the natural progesterone (Prometrium) and the thyroid medication. I thought I was going to bleed to death before it finally stopped. My doctor admonished me to not take any aspirin for the excessive endometrial pain causing buildup. Diagnosed and prescribed September 5, 2001. Age 46. Now more normal periods than I have ever had. I did my homework to avoid the synthetic hormone merry-go-round which puts too many women on the surgery table for hysterectomy. You were deficient in progesterone, so therefore you were building up too much endometrium. Without progesterone to rise and fall naturally, a normal menstrual blood flow is impossible. I am guessing you are bleed free by now? You can e-mail me if you wish. I took estratest and provera off and on for years and the only problem I had was tender breasts. My doctor just recently advised me to stop taking HRT because of my family history and the new research on HRT. Now I'm suffering from Hot Flashes, ugh! Hopefully I'll find something soon to correct the problem. We have MATURED, isn't it fun!!!!

I have had no post-menopausal problems including hot flashes. This was a pleasant surprise to me because I had such horrible periods and PMS and I had read that the two are linked. My emotional state is the best it has been in my entire life. That surprised me too. I think getting off the estrogen roller coaster was good for me. I also reconnected to my faith so it is hard to say what comes from what. I have finally been released from a lifetime of painful shyness. It is such a joy not to have to plan every outing, every vacation, and weigh job offers on the basis of "when is my period due and what facilities will be available" Spending entire days in the bathroom because the flow was so relentless are over. Lying in bed trying not to scream from the cramps is over. Becoming suicidal once a month is over too. I have taken nothing and am glad for it, but all of my friends are either on HRT or tranquilizers to handle their post-menopausal problems. I guess I am just lucky or maybe I used up all my bad karma on the 44 years I spent trying to deal with all that mess and pain.

My doctor gave me a 10-day prescription for Provera, to help regulate me (she compared it to a D & C). My cycles are out of whack, my sonograms were normal. Am afraid of the side effects, especially the weight gain. I plan on taking them when my husband is on his business trip so I don't have to subject him to any potential side effects (LOL).
