Sal, I got one because of allergies. I run it in my bedroom, to have at least my sleeping time allergen free. Mine runs in late winter during the cedar tree pollinating time, and during rag weed season.

No idea, if it would be good for your application.

I had and liked the EdenPure and we did notice a difference in the air. The 1st machine I got lasted a few months, then messed up and some kind of white powdery stuff was all inside/outside. It was like something exploded. It was still under warranty so I sent it back and they replaced it. Same thing happened, but it was out of warranty and was going to way more than I was willing to puy for a "used/refurbished" machine! I pulled the plug on it and put it on the curb! lol

Don't sit plants close to it..it will KILL them. Not sure why..but it does!

According to the info at epinions on the one Moni linked above, it has 168 sq.ft. coverage. If you have a quite large area, you may have to have more than one purifier, regardless of what you go with.

Another thing to consider before buying, is the cost of replacement filters, and maybe approximately how often it is suggested they be changed, or maybe if they have washable filters.

That is the good thing about mine. It has an indicator light when the filter needs changing. So far, I never have. Bought is thing when we lived in Tahlequah, and left there in 2004. So, I have run it for at least 6 allegy seasons.

I did buy a new filter a while ago, online, when I could get free shipping someplace if I had a minimum amount I was paying. The filter brought it up to it. Don't remember where... It's written on the box, and the box is in storage...

Story of my life, my stuff is in storage. :)

If I did buy one, I think it would be a Friedrich. They got top ratings from Consumer Reports back when I was considering one. They are expensive to buy, but not to maintain. They are relatively quiet for somethinng that actually *works*. Many of these gizmo's just move air, and others are cheap to buy but require frequent replacement of expensive filters.

If your filters aren't getting dirty, the thing isn't working!

Salgal -- Must you have a coal stove in your living area? That has to be awful for your lungs. Maybe you wouldn't NEED an air filter.

Well, the stove is a fixture in the room...set on an elevated brick hearth. My only other option 'someday' is to switch it to gas. That would be costly since I do not have a gas hook -up and would need a tank, a line run to the house,and a new stove.
It a very nice stove - a Vermont Castings - and is designed to be an attractive piece...it is nice and I love the heat, I just dont like the dust. It is actually the spent ashes that make the dust.
I figure a good filtering system would go a long way before replacing the stove and wouldn't hurt to have even if the stove was not operational (like summer)
I have mostly hardwood floors and where there is carpet I shampoo them twice a year.
Chisue, yes you're right it has to be bad for my lungs (my cats too)....if it is leaving a fine dust hours after I clean...well I have to be breathing it. I just want to eliminate as much as I can without taking a second mortgage or resorting to 100% electric heat (which is ridiculous $$$)

I have a honeywell, similar to oklamoni's.

When we were going to buy one, coincidentally, Consumer Reports was running an article on them. They were adamant that the glitzy ones with no filter (just a metal collection tower--in the $400-500 range at the time, highly advertised) were less than worthless. Their research showed that for the air purifier to be effective, it needed to have a fan and filter. The one I have has 2 filters. One is a large filter that looks like the air filter on a car (only bigger), the other is a foam filter. The foam can be washed and reused, the paper one needs to be replaced--but not that often.

I can assure you, the filter makes SUCH and AMAZING difference. Once you turn it on and run it for a bit, the air in the room is cool and clean--you can actually feel the difference if you walk into the room from an 'uncleaned' area of the house. I think you'll be happy with the results if you get a good air cleaner.

I'll second azzalea's conclusion about ionic air purifiers. They are less than useless because not only do they not work, but they actually generate ozone as a by-product, and ozone is a pollutant at ground level. In fact nearly all ozone-producing "air purifiers" are banned in California as of late last year. You want a purifier with as big a HEPA filter as you can get. The top models aren't cheap, but they have long warranties and typically will run well for years.

I had one but all it did was build up static and draw dust to the wall behind it. I didn't notice any difference in air quality. I have spring-summer-fall allergies and sinus problems. Did nothing for me so I unplugged it and gave it to my sister for her asthmatic son. A waste of money IMO. .

Jamie--what kind did you have? The type with the air filter and fan? or the ionic (useless) kind with just a metal collection surface. They're vastly different, and it would help those looking at buying one, if they knew what kind you had that was unsatifactory.

Sorry I don't remember the brand. I think it was a cheapie. My parents and inlaws always bought the best appliances they could find, regardless of the cost. I didn't always follow their example.
