Ten months w/o a period, then WHAM! It's baaaack! Grrrrr

sooz

I thought SURE I was gonna get my menopause badge in a couple more months, but nooooooo. Got my period yesterday, so now I get to start "counting" the months all over again.

I hear from my doc that 12 months without a period means you have officially done the menopause dance. Sheesh! So close!!!

I've been having hot flashes on and off (sometimes none for months at a time!) for about 2 years--nothing too bothersome, thankfully. My doc also said that when I started having hot flashes, my fertility went waaaaay down to zero cuz I'm (gasp!) in my early 50s and the hot flashes plus my age were an indicator of failed fertility, and that I might have some spotting or breakthru bleeding (did have a bit of spotting, for less than 1 day, last summer). YMMV, of course, but that's what my doc told me.

Now, I wonder just how long or how heavy this !surprise! period is gonna be... dang it!!!

Just wanted to share my frustration at getting my little visitor yet again...

Yep me too, 11 months and started with sore tender breasts and whammo here we go again, no big deal for me though just a part of the cycle, I don't have any other symptoms and feel 29 rather than 49 ;) but LADIES don't take Premarin or any other PMU based estrogen replacement ...

Please go to www.premarin.org and educate yourselves and if needed your doctor too on what you are contributing to and the risks you are taking! DEMAND a synthetic or non PMU organic will actually work better with less side effects too.

I am a Vegan and don't use ANY animal products since 1979 as I believe animals deserve to live happy lives too. Please go to www.premarin.org and educate yourselves on what you are taking as it's NOT good for you OR natural for you (like drinking cow's milk, it's MEANT for calves) it also promotes unneccessary suffering BIG TIME! In other words, GOT CONSCIENCE? I drink soy protein with phyto nutrients daily for a long time for protein replacement since I don't eat meat or dairy THANK GOD but it's also considered a natural estrogen replacement too and LOVE it, TASTES GREAT and does a body GOOD ;) NATURAL ORGANIC & INEXPENSIVE too

Lastly, help spread the word and let other animal/horse lovers know about this SHADY billion dollar industry based entirely on the suffering of horses. Sales of Premarin have already plummeted 30% (2003) from their high in 1999 and will continue to do so as more and more studies link the drug to life threatening ailments and women are made more aware of these studies...

PLEASE STOP for your own life and ALSO the poor horses'and their foles, take what I suggest or demand a synthetic or organic non pmu at once as PREMARIN KILLS!

Read the site straight thru a LOT of improtant information you need to know before you ingest anymore horse urine, YUK!!

Ten months must be the golden number...me, too! I'm 53 and was feeling awfully good - no more hot flashes or migraines then WHAM...my husband likes to claim it's his fault...that he keeps me "young" - HA! It's not been fun - lots of cramping and heavy, but I understand that this is not abnormal, just frustrating. I'm laughing because I just can't wait to "dry up" for good! Keeping my fingers crossed that this was just my body's last little joke on me.

Hang in there, all of you. Glad I stumbled on this message board because you girls all put a smile back on my face. :)

Wow, am I ever glad to have found this forum! It's always good to hear others who are going through the same thing as the "standard information" on medical sites can scare the living daylights out of us!

I've just turned 52 this month. Since 2004, I haven't had a regular period. More like 3 to 5 days of spotting with all of the PMS symptoms but, not a real flow. (Prior to this stretch of time, I'd had those nasty flood periods every month for about a year.) In 2006, I would go 3 months or more with nothing then, back to these 3 to 5 days of spotting again. In February of 2007, I had one day of spotting, then nothing until February of this year when I got a full blown period again.

In panic of course as it had been just about a full year or more without any bleeding, I ran to my doc who asked about the hot flushes and other symptoms. I realized that the hot flushes had really lessened to nearly disappeared a couple of weeks prior and for the first time in a long time, I'd actually felt chilly instead of dressing in a t-shirt and shorts while everyone else was bundled up. LOL She said that she felt it was all hormonal fluctuations and a real period.

I have had several ultrasounds done during these past few years, including in March of this year after that period. I was checked as post menopausal to be on the safe side, but she said she still considered me perimenopausal. That came back as a normal lining thickness and told me that I didn't need to worry if I got any further bleeding.

In June, I had a day of light spotting again then, 23 days later, full PMS symptoms and I'm on yet another period again this month. My doc did mention that I could go back to cycling for a bit. This period is a bit heavier than the one in February and lasting longer (I'm on Day 7 with a light to moderate flow and cramping but, not like my "flood periods" of a few years ago)

Anyone else relate to this? Any opinions? Do I trust my doc? I go every year for my PAP's and have had an vaginal and abdominal ultrasound come back "normal" after the period in February. Would love some feedback.

Thanks for being here!

I am so glad I found this forum!

I'm 48 years old and had not had a period since last October (a little over nine months ago). The hot flashes were constant (a lot of days they were every two hours) from last October up until one month ago. I don't know what's worse - constant hot flashes or occasional periods - LOL!

Well I've been very emotional this past week and was very crampy yesterday. So I wasn't really surprised when I started my period this morning, maybe just a little depressed.

I've been experiencing irregular periods for 4 1/2 years. I guess I'll just have to start a new countdown. It;s nice to know there are others who share my distress!

Thanks for "listening".

Glad to see this forum is thriving. I'm 51 and have been in the peri stage since my late 30's. I thought I had it all figured out until these past two years. My period has gone completely wacky. Last year I was getting the "floods" every other month or so. It got so bad I was missing work at times. That ended (and I don't miss it a bit!). Now, however, other things are happening. Insomnia is creeping in. That hurts because I was always a good sleeper! My periods have become increasingly unpredictable. Most of the time it's staining for about a week or so. The last full period I had was last October. Now, after staining off and on for a few weeks I have the light period that just won't go away. I'm also an emotional wreck. I'm anxious, moody, irritable and crampy!! I'm so glad I found this place. I just want to know I'm not losing it! I just don't feel like ME anymore. anyone else feel that way? Like you're looking at a stranger in the mirror??

Well, I feel somewhat relieved after reading there are others who have gone for 17 or 18 months without a period and then...surprise. Several times I asked myself why I held onto my pads, but glad I did.

I had heavy bleeding between March of 2007 to June of 2007 and then it slowed to a trickle and finally stopped in July. Doc did blood work that showed I was post menopausal and a pelvic ultrasound that showed a thicken endometrium. ( wanted to do a biopsy, but I stopped).

Sometimes over the months I would feel crampy like I was going to start and then nothing, and sometimes I would get a familiar twinge in my breasts which always signaled ovulation,..and then nothing.

But about 3 weeks ago my nipples because extremely sore and my breast swelled up, and then about 2 weeks ago I felt very irritable as in PMS, and yesterday I started to spot.

Who decided on the 12 Month rule anyway???

Anyone here been diagnoised with think endometrial lining?

Thanks

I, too, have been waiting patiently for my badge, then after 10 months WHAMMO! My brain went into denial mode - I probably just ate too much watermelon for my late night snack . . Maybe it was hemorrhoids? But Noooooo! I sat there stunned for about 10 minutes, then the cramps set in. Feeling sorry for myself, I hopped on the computer and found you guys. Thank you for being here! After reading all your posts and getting the giggles, I realize I'm not alone, and that helps- Cheers!

this is my second round of thinking i was done. the forst time, i went 10 months and then i got my period and bled for an average 4-5 day. then i went another 10 months and then got my period but have been bleeding for the past 17 days!!! went to the gyn yesterday and she took blood to recheck my FSH levels and wants me to get a vaginal ultrasound. has anyone had one of these?? for some reason i am horrified to get one.

Gosh, thanks for all the input and info! Sorry I don't have many answers, but I have had a vaginal ultrasound, so maybe this will help the poster known as "allgirls."

The vaginal ultrasound is absolutely painless. A female tech did it, and it took less than 10 minutes--no pain. I think I had to drink a lot of water before it to *distend* my lower pelvic area. You may want to google it and find out more specifics about this simple test.

Oh, and BTW, here I am 5 years after my initial post and LOVING menopause! No more periods or even spotting! However, I do have the occasional hot flash/hot flush and from what I've read, that could stay with me for a while, but they are mild. I never did have night sweats, so aside from my initial post, it's really been an easy transition.

As for still feeling like myself, well, I do, only better! Maybe it's because I've "aged" and matured or maybe I am just less tolerant of things, but I seem to have found my *voice.* I've become active in our union and have become an advocate for my students, and have not hesitated to say "no" to my bosses and have been vocal (but gentle) in my disagreements with them. Love it! Of course, there is more to this backstory, but that's another time, another forum.

I work with a bunch of 25 year olds, who make me feel horrible about what I am going through, so any advise is welcomed

Hi!

Glad to know I'm not alone. Here's my story - after 15 months without a period and blood work indicating I was menopausal, guess what came back? In February, I had light spotting for about a week. Went to doc in March, he did transvaginal ultrasound and everything looked good. Endometrial lining only 3mm, so he wasn't concerned. But he said to come back if it reoccurred. Well, a full blown period started on April 15 and I had all the pre-period symptoms I used to get - tender breasts, cramping, etc. Most of it has been fairly light flow, but had a couple of instances of heavy flow. And it's been over 2 weeks and never really stopped!!! All so surprising since a month ago my lining was so thin. So frustrating and annoying. I am back to see my doc tomorrow and I know he's going to want to do a biopsy. Guess it's necessary and will give me peace of mind.

Could this be because I'm still making too much estrogen, hence the tender breasts and other symptoms as well as the never-ending period? Even with the 15 months of no periods I've never had hot flashes, so I'm wondering if my estrogen level didn't drop that much. Is the drop in estrogen what causes hot flashes?

Had two co-workers who had similar things happen after about a year without periods. One was on the verge of a hysterectomy due to the heavy flow that went on for months. Doc urged caution and eventually it stopped.

After reading your tales, I'm beginning to believe that bleeding after a year or more of nothing is not all that uncommon.

Two years non stop bleeding - 11 months nothing and now a full blown period. Coincidence or not that a month before the bleeding stopped i was prescribbed biodentical testosterone for low libido, and a month ago I stopped using it. So was the testosterone stopping the bleeding? Seems unlikly but who knows....anyone?

I found you gals this morning. You are all an emotional life saver to me. I'm 55, no period for 7 months and the menopausal symtoms have been severe. My hub is ready to string me up with piano wire. Yesterday, I started spotting, and today I have what looks like a full blown period. Went to the doc yesterday. He said if I do anything but spot, he is going to do an ultrasound and uterine biopsy next Thursday. O.K., now and I supposed to worry about cancer? This is so stressful.

Hey, jd7253--before I went thru this menopause stuff, I had a "period" whose flow would not stop one morning! For the first time in my life, I was wearing a TOWEL to control the flow and called the doc. They sent me in--immediately--to the ER, then called back before I left and told me to go directly to the GYN, whose office was above the ER.

I had a uterine biopsy in the doc's office, which was no big deal except for sometimes it was a bit "pinchy" now and then, like maybe when you pull a hangnail and it's "owie" for a few seconds. They gave me some meds, and scheduled an ultrasound for a couple of weeks later to see what was the cause of the hemorrhage. The bleeding had slowed considerably by the time I got home (whew!), but the doc said if it started up again, go directly to the ER and they would call him.

The biopsy was normal, but the ultrasound showed some kind of cyst. I had a followup ultrasound and the cyst had disappeared. One of the mysteries of the female body, huh?

I tell ya, if I had known about a procedure called intrauterine ablation, I would have had that done during my 30s--no more periods (which, of course, means no more kids--at least that's what they say about the ablation).

Anyway, it's probably *nothing*, but your doc wants to rule out anything out of the ordinary. Of course, your mind goes directly to the worst thing, and nothing but good test results will put your fears to rest. Meanwhile, I'm holding a good thought for you. Please post again and let us know what's what, okay?

Smiles,
Sooz

Thanks so much Sooz. This feels like just a period to me, same thing I used to have. I'm not bleeding any more than I used to with one of my normal periods but this is getting so darned annoying. Before menopause, I didn't have to worry, but now, what looks like a period freaks me out totally. A year and a half ago, I had a DNC for a small uterine fibroid. The reason I even went in then was because I was skipping periods, then spotting, then having full blown periods, then skipping again. My sis took HRT years ago and ended up with uterine cancer, so I don't want to go down that road. Thank you so much for responding. Just knowing that there are other women out there who experience this same thing also is a comfort!

Glad to help, jd7253... and good for you, monitoring your health and going to the doc when something is out of the norm for ya!

I've always avoided HRT based on what I've read, and thankfully, my menopause "symptoms" have been very mild so that certainly helped me avoid HRT, and I really didn't have to seek out alternative therapies either.

Keep us all posted!

I am so glad I found this!!! Didn't have my period for 8 months and then I got it and got it again two weeks later. Had a biopsy and it was fine. My doctor said have a D&C if you bleed again. Sure enough it is 1 1/2 months later and I have a light period. I believe I am starting again and will seek a second opinion before I do anything.
Any advice from the real experts??????? Thanks for all the great information too.

If you are having classic pms type period symptoms, like tender breasts, cramps, fatigue and wanting to kill people, just like the old days, does this mean it is not likely to be 'something sinister'? I mean, would cancer also come with all these hormonal period-like symptoms?

Hi Ladies, I just saw my A.R.N.P. and had my annual exam, and she had told me that once you don't have a period for a year, you're menopausal and that you shouldn't bleed at all not even spotting, because it could be a sign of uterine cancer. Has anyone else been told this? I have always had my yearly's because Cancer runs very high in my family. Just wanted to put this out. have faith life will get easier.

I'm new to these health boards, but sorta freaking out right now. Just turned 52, had my last real period in January, in Feb and March maybe just spotting.(before that have had the two a month, short ones, etc which my doctor was aware of) On June 12 got my regular period, which save for a 2 day break, went on for about 2.5 weeks. My obgyn thought it was the grande finale before menopause and she put me on 5 mg aygestin for 10 days. Bleeding did not stop completely in 2-3 days as advised (though was light all along) she told me to keep taking it for the remaining week, during which I got some light brown spotting, then a sort of regular period for 2 days, then for about the last week this strange feeling of being wet down there, like period is coming, but nothing, about once (to twice) a day when I wipe some very very light brown particles showing. Doctor thinks I am not "completely" cleaned out and is going to to an ultrasound and biopsy. She mentioned possible hyperplasia and or polyp, etc, said she is not overly worried, and if was would have me in there asap, first appt I could get is 3 weeks from now. she told me she will try to move it up. if not I may find another provider who can get me in sooner. anyone else have these symptoms or know of anyone who has?? I'm nervous as can be as I have an ongoing fear of health issues (mostly imagined) which I am getting counseling for.

I have not had a period in 2 years. In April my doctor said the blood tests showed I was post menopause. So far the only symptoms I have is feeling warm (cannot have covers on me at night), No hot flashes or sweats - thankfully.
Now to my problem - I had relations with my husband and it was uncomfortable( ouch) and the next day when I wiped i saw blood. Not a flow. I have had it for a few days and still no flow. Of course I freaked out and called my gyno who said it was probably irritation from dryness that is causing the bleeding. I am hoping that is all it is. After reading the thread I do feel better. It is alarming when you think your the only one experiencing this. Has anyone had bleeding caused my dryness. I am only 44 and sorta freaked out by the whole menopause thing. Although I do nto miss my period that is for sure, lol.

What a relief to find this message board! I am 44, married with no children, last period was 10 months ago. Have been experiencing moderate perimenopause symptoms for 3 years (hot flashes, disrupted sleep) but have controlled much of it on my own, after much research, through using progesterone and estriol creams, as well as supplements that contain classic menopause support ingredients. At first it was difficult, on an emotional level, for me to accept I might possibly be approaching menopause. After a time, though, it began to turn into a positive for me and a part of me began to look forward to the "12-month" finish line (LOL). To my dismay I got my period a few weeks ago. What a disappointment, to know I had to begin counting again. On the plus side, however, all of the perimenopause symptoms have completely gone (of course) and I've had the most amazing, restful, solid sleep at night. What a gift! It's almost worth it to start counting the months again. I am wondering, though, once one reaches full menopause, do any of you feel you get better sleep again (once the hormone surges are over)? Or will the sleep quality be poor the rest of my life? I hope not!

I had no period since March.
Nothing, not many symptoms etc.
Then about two weeks ago started having bad mood swings could go from happy, to mad to crying in a matter of minutes.
And I rarely cry. So mad I had to just hide in my room lay in bed and bury my face in the TV.
Went to doctor Sept 14th, day after I turned 43.
I woke up this morning with a migraine its been on and off all day.
Getting worse , have taken fiornal , imtrex and Midrin not all at once but over the pass 18 hours.
Medicine only makes it mild not all gone, not so I can get up and do much of anything.
Went to bathroom and what do I see RED! Spotting. Not heavy YET.
I was hoping it was over.

Glad I found this board. I'm 54. Last full period August 2008. Then a tiny bit of spotting Feb 2008. Then absolutely nothing (not even a discharge) until September 2010. Tiny bit of brownish discharge for a couple of days. I had been exercising a lot so didn't think anything of it. In fact, I thought maybe I rode the stationary bike too long one day. Then in November 2010 I noticed tenderness in my nipples for a couple of weeks. I thought I needed a new bra. Then one day, I noticed the white, stretchy discharge (ovulation?) Then two weeks later, I had the exhausted, headachey feeling I used to get before my period and then POW ! My period started. Just like in the old days. Heavy flow for 1 day, then slowly tapering over the next 6 days until it stopped. When the period started, the nipple tenderness went away almost immediately. I called my Gyne and will have an appointment next week. I have been terrified because during my last well gyne check up the doctor said to come in right away if I noticed bleeding. In reading this forum, it's not as unusual as I thought to have a period after nothing for years. So I'm trying to relax and not worry so much.

Dear Debs56,

I went 15 months without a period then March 2010 got full period went to Doctor he did biopsy in the office and then went to hospital for DNC needless to say they found nothing

I am 49 started with menopause at 43 it has been sheer hell. What I think is menopause is a very tricky thing and only when your body says its done it will stop.

You should definitely go to doc for testing but don't be too nervous guess your body has a way to go to the finish line.

Hang in there I know it stinks starting again from month 1. I learned its one day at a time.

Please let me know how you do with doc.

I went two years with God awful periods - heavy, lasting up to two weeks, clots...just gross. Doctor did biopsy: PAINFUL!!! but, all was good. He wanted to do endometrial ablation. I read up on it...refused, then period did an abrupt slow down...1 period every other month for a year, then 1 period every three months for a year, then six months nothing, then had a period, then nine months without, and I just had a 'normal' acting period. Hot flashes, which have been more like 'steamers' went away for the month preceding the last period. I am 56 years old. ???

Doctor said he wants to do another biopsy. I am refusing, as of this date. It has been 2 weeks since the period ended, it lasted 1 week, normal flow, and then yesterday and today, I am having ovarian pain (much like I used to have in my youth when ovulating). ??? So, googled and found this site.

By the way, my period started when I was 12 years old, and my cycles were exactly 28 day cycles...always, with one 32 day cycle every year. I always felt that 32 day cycle was my body somehow 'resetting' itself.

Glad I found this site, gives me some relief that maybe I really am NORMAL...

Feeling down over here...decided to google what is going on with me and found you! I'm 52, last regular period was Nov. 14, 2009, then on April 1, 2010 got a heavy period. Then from May till October 2010 I had heart palpitations most days. I read online they have something to do with menopause so I just got used to them. The end of October I got the worst headache and bad strong paps so I made an appointment with my DR, then right before I went I spotted for 2 days and alllll was better, no more paps too!!!

Well it's been 6 months and all was GREAT (never felt better) until April 17, 2011, I had the worst headache and then got my freaken period, it's a heavy flow and now I am wondering what next? Should I make an appointment, should I just do nothing and start the countdown all over again??

From reading most of the above comments I am thinking all of this is normal, if so let me know? I'm just tired and looking forward to getting past this period! :(

Carla, we are the same age and I also haven't had any hot flashes or hormonal problems. I posted this on two other threads:

Just posted this on the ablation thread. Worth repeating here.
It is NOT always normal. It could be deadly.

~~

I had a hysteroscopy, D&C and uterine ablation (electrical) the end of February. I only experience cramping once - woke me up during the night on Day 8. Other than that, it was nothing. My reason for the ablation was similar to many of yours - didn't have a period for 5 months, then one more on than off for almost 2 months. Was time for my yearly, so off I went. My doctor (of 30 years) told me if it cranked up again to come back. I was back in two weeks, when his office did a v. ultrasound. Discovered one small fibroid. Slight thickening of the uterine lining. Suggested the ablation, D&C and hysteroscopy.

After the ablation, etc he said everything looked good. Went home that afternoon with an RX for 5mg Percocet. I only took 1 every 8 hours the first four days. Then cut it in half.

He called the following week and said the path reports showed complex atypica endometrial hyperplasia. 30% go on to become uterine cancer. Not something I wanted to sit and watch. He had already contacted the gyn oncologist. Both suggested hysterectomy.

So two weeks ago I had a DaVinci system hysterectomy. Path reports came back with some remaining (even though the recent ablation) complex hyperplasia in the uterus - none had crossed over to cancer. No way to tell if what was cancer before the ablation.

But I'm able to sleep now knowing my 30% chance of cancer is now a 99% cured.

My point for posting is so everyone knows that even at 50yo, it is not always normal to stop having periods, then experience heavy bleeding. There is no cancer of any kind in the females of my family. Just be aware, and don't write it off to peri-menopause or being "that age." That's what I was doing and it was far from normal.

Hi, glad I found this forum. I'm 46, went 8 months without a period, then got it, went 10 months without, then got it, now I just went a year without and dang, got it again today. I've assumed this was normal and haven't talked to the doc about it. Maybe I should. In the past when I've mentioned going without for so long they just figured I was in menopause but I'm a little concerned that this time I went a year and got it back again. It's not really much of a period either. I've got the cramping but it's not too bad other than that.

Hi, like everyone else I am pleased to find this forum and know that I'm not alone in my symptoms. I am 50 and my last period was January 2010. I thought it was finally finished but two weeks ago I had the whitish ovulation discharge, then last week my nipples were very sore, earlier today I start bleeding but no cramping as yet! I am getting hot flushes again but was putting that down to stress! I will be making an appointment to get checked out by the doc.

I can't believe my story is so similar to several others. I have not had a period since last June (it's May now) and here is another one. Before that it had been since the previous June. I guess there's a lot to be said for the springtime theory, eh?

It had been 10 full mos and a few days and then, yesterday, yes, BAM! Here it is, again. I was so bummed, I began yelling: "NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!" and then cried (wailed) and did all that emotive stuff. Sigh. I called a friend and she reminded me that the main reason I'm so bummed is not only b/c I wanted to glide thru menopause, but that I was attached to the fact that since it had been so long w/out a period, I was SURE (certain) I was not going to have another. And then she told me something similar happened to her, and that period was minimal and then that was that. I was upset b/c I'm thinking now I have to "start all over" but I don't have to start all over. It's just the process. Sigh. I gotta tell ya how utterly and over-the-moon (and everything else) bummed I am about the return of the blood. Just...whatever! Grrrr.

Ah, I've decided that menopause just sucks! Of course, being me, I didn't write down the exact month that I had my last period, but I'm relatively sure it was around Feb./March of last year- so roughly 14 months. So...what happens?? Uh-huh...light, but just freaked me out all over the place- spotted one day, nothing for the next two days...then yesterday, started spotting again, today, a tad heavier but not much. Had all the usual pre symptoms, didn't even click what was coming, lol. I'm not on any estrogen or anything else, just figured that women have been going through this for eons, and toughed it out- boy, has it been tough, lol.

I think the one thing that bothers me, is the fact that when women have a period right after a year of no periods, the dr. always wants to do all sorts of testing- I haven't been to the dr. for any of this, and gosh I don't want to be stuck on all sorts of meds. I'm wondering if the reason I started like this is because of several factors going on in my life right now (is this anything new in any of our lives? lol)....have three grandsons, 9, 5, and 1 who were placed with me...just lost 35 lbs., due to having to radically change my diet because my cholesterol was through the roof (got the chol. down to normal in three months..without meds, yayyy meeee! LOL). There are a couple more things going on in my life that are causing stress as well, but..

Ohhhh how I wish I had read up more on the trials of freaking menopause before I ever started going through it!!! It was just a total shocker-

Well, who'd've thunk it?! And here I thought I was all alone - so glad to see I am not. My "last" period was somewhere around labor day (last September) and I was pretty much convinced that was it, it's over. I'd gont from regular every four weeks, to six, to eight and then it just stopped altogether. I've stayed on natural supplements to help keep hot flashes and mood swings somewhat under control, but have so far refused estrogen therapies (I just fail to see the point since it's a natural process and why add hormones that my body is trying to eliminate anyway?)

Anyhoo, about a week ago I started having serious breast tenderness, almost like pregnancy it was so bad. Now I KNOW (unfortunately) it couldn't possibly be pregnancy since I've not been "exposed" and just assumed menopausal stuff. Wee hours this morning I make the regular early morning bathroom visit - and she's baaaaaaack! It started out as a wee bit of spotting but this afternoon it's more like a full fledged period again.

Never expected that to happen after nine months!

Went to the Dr.....said all was well.suggested ablation for the heavy bleeding...not happy about scraping the inside of my body.opted not.....June period was lighter.more "normal.no period in July.thought maybe we were on the right track.nope, today started spotting. I really believed I was on the way.the mental side of this is devastating....

The thing that bothers me the most is the uncertainty. Seems you have to be "protected" no matter where you go or what you do. Not a simple head out the door, grab your keys and go.now.....since you never know when your period might strike....do I have tampons, a couple pads......how far can I go.....I feel like I have a chain around my neck.

I am 59 and went without a period for "10 Months" too, as some of you in the above postings. Now for several days I have been doing some very light spotting. I wouldn't call it a period so if this doesn't develop into one then I will go for the 12 month concept that turns from perimenopause to menopause. October 2011 will mark the transition if I don't get a real period. I will keep you posted.

I am 45 years of age and have just had a period after 6 months without. After a visit to my GP a bloodtest revealed that I was experiencing a'definiate change'. I found myself with mixed feelings to the cessation of periods; I was enjoying the absence of migraines and mood swings, but felt too young to be in menopause. I had noticed changes in my period's frequency and length since my late thirties/early forties and concluded I must be in peri-menopause. After mentioning this to the nurse during my routine smear test at the age of 42, she said I was 'too young to be starting menopause', but here I am 3 years later with a blood test telling me I am and a period telling me I am not, confusing times. Before my latest period I noticed that my hot flashes had stopped and that my breats were tender, so it seems that my hormones are still fluctuating, so I suppose I will just have to wait and see....

Great thread, sooz.

After reading this, I'm now convinced I'm ultra-normal, LOL!

Maybe it's cuz Dad's a Gyn and if I thought something was abnormal I could easily ask his opinion day or night, but I've never considered anything that's happened to me as anything BUT normal and have never consulted my Dr. on the subject of menopause. Last time my Dad and I talked, he said to supplement D and Fish Oil, but I think that was more for general health for not only females, but males as well.

I'm 51, DH is 57 and we're DINKs. I had ultra-normal cycles for 45 or 46 yrs., average cramping, etc., no surgery, no b/c pills (except for a very short stint around 18 y/o - they gave me migraine headaches and I had been plagued with them as a child and teen).

About 4 yrs ago, my cycles started increasing the days between, and lessening in their severity. I figured it was pretty much a normal process, and I'm fairly sure I was right.

My last period was a year ago last month, and am convinced and pr*y it was the last. Before that, I went 11 months. But for about 2 or 3 yrs before that, I cycled about 6-8 times a year. Like mozie (?) above, I didn't really keep track. But when the flashes started a few yrs ago they got my attention!

You just know what's happening when you're calm and relaxed one minute and dripping in sweat the next.

I just had to post about my most frustrating experience, cuz it's not so much the monthly horror show...

I live in TX and, as most of you probably know, we had a record breaking Summer here (2011). I did NOT experience a single Hot Flash ALL SUMMER LONG! We're talking months of 100+ degree F temps and no rain (was it the lack of humidity? I'm an absolute mess in high humidity). When the temp finally broke in late Aug/early Sept, WHAM, the flashes are back!

I look online and, sure enough, find out my body's temperature gauge is going haywire. I can comprehend that, but holy cow this is hard! I'm "hot-natured" like my Dad's Mom, and I saw her suffer here for many years with the flashes. Luckily my Mom's side's "time" is short and sweet, no real problems and her side of the family is from the deep south.

I realize I'm fortunate enough to have approachable parents who are/were medical professionals and am fairly schooled on my family's medical history. I haven't heard any horror stories in this regard, it's my heart I've got to worry about ;-(

But please let me have my badge? I promise I'll continue to take it all in stride, and please make the flashes go away? I know it's nothing big like the "C" word, but I had my first flash in front of my boss the other day, ACKKKK! I have been experiencing the clammy/cold feeling after the sweat, argggg, I am so done with this!

Calgon? Anyone, or thing? Take it AWAY, please!!!!!! And thanks for the vent, y'all ;-)

I just had my annual 3 weeks ago and was happy to hear my Dr. finally agree I was in the early stages of menepause...after 3 years of on again off again periods...never knowing when it will come, if it will come, and then finally come when its most unexpected...after 11 and months of no period's...my friend decided to show her face...and boy is she here with a vengenace....It has been 2 weeks exactly and she's still here...not strong but annoying none the less...I guess now I will have to start my countdown all over again....glad to know I'm not out here alone....

I am 49 and March 2011, was my last period until December 2011, I had went to the Dr. back in June 11 because my BP was off the charts and I started experiencing was I was later told were hot flashes, as soon as I got on a low level of BP medicine the hot flashes stopped, in December 11, I could not tell if I was trying to have a period but I had what appeared to be spotting and then nothing in Jan 12 and now this month Feb, I actually started to feel as if I was going to have a period and then I have been so slightly spotting, I have experienced two panic attacks where I was worried about something not sure what and could not breath. Am I in menopause or do now I start over, should I see a gyn?

Hi from a new member! I'm 50 years old and had my first menstrual cycle exactly 1 month after my 12th birthday. Now that I'm the BIG 50 and experiencing irregular periods since I was my 40's, I'm wondering when I'll get my last period. Nowadays, I have more than just irregular periods. I also experience hot flashes, mood swings and brief dizzy spells with tinnitus, the latter of which can be included in the symptoms of menopause.
It's been 10 months since my last cycle and that happened last year too. When will it end?

This is the best forum, thank you for starting it...Heres my story....I'm 51 1/2, at our age we start counting the 1/2 years again!, CJeans...i'm right there with you kid...piggy backing and then some...I had gone for nine months with nothing, no pms, no night sweats, no moodiness..was just loving it, and ready to join the "white pants club", but nooooo, starting getting tender breasts, and within two weeks started spotting. I'll always be so grateful that about 4 years ago I had the intrauterine ablation procedure. Before that my periods were very very heavy, usually missed at least one day per month from work, and when at work, I'd be afraid of what might happen if I stood up...anyway, due to the procedure my periods have always been very light since, and even now, thank goodness they are light, and the cramping is light. But I was always very regular, you could set your calendar to every 28 days. Now, back in Feb, when I started again after nine wonderful months, it was 20 days, then 18 days, and now it was 1 day...all the pms with each...even the one day...tender breast...headackes...cramps...thank goodness it's just heavy spotting....but such a pain in the you know what..anyway, not ready to see the Dr. yet, I wont go for my yearly until August, but I'm sure hoping this thing stops soon...

this is for suntee or anyone else who is having heavy flow periods. If you can get the ablation procedure done DO IT!!! Spent many years worrying about "what if it starts while I'm doing this or doing that....missed a lot of work, and finally had the ablation procedure...changed my life forever...been to cabo three times now, I never would have planned a vacation like that before....not quite to the "white pants club" yet..but my very next period after the ablation procedure, which will be three years this July, it's was so light...I couldn't believe that after 5 months it was still so light, been light every since..I was so tickled when I purchased tampons in the smallest size, and not then new super sized ones, (I use to have to wear two supersized tampons just to make it through an hour at times, with at least two large nighttime pads)...I'm telling you, the ablation procedure was a life changer for me....now the reason I'm on this thread...I'm 51, after 9 months of nothing, my period started again in February, 20 days later in March, 18 days later in April, and now it hasn't stopped in 12 days. Very very light, just spotting, one tampon in an entire day would probably be enough...but I thought I was so close to the 12 month magic mark...anyone else out there have a period that lasted a long time, and finally stopped, (i'm sure there is, just want a little reassurance and I know, I could go see my Dr., and will if it's still going on next week, just such a pain)...thank you lady's for listening..

Hi ladies :-) I'm 47. I had always been regular until December 2011. I am sitting here with my period again after 6 months of no bleeds and about 4 months of crazy hot flushes on the hour ever hour. My doctor said "you'll get your period again and you'll feel so much better and then you'll start all over again"... ArghhH! Well, I do admit, I kind of feel like my "old self" as I sit here, so there is some familiarity about being in this condition which gives some confort - on the other hand.. you know its all going to start again - let's hope without the hot flushes :( but am I being unrealistic? My story.

Last time this happened I went 9 months without a period and suddenly woke up one morning and hello Aunty Flo.
This lasted 5 days and happened for 3 months.

Started hot flushes and no monthlies. The hot flushes lasted for about 7 months and suddenly no more yippee.

Now it has been 11 months and today I coughed, felt something inside pop and though hmmm that didn't feel good.
Went to the loo and ohhh noooo.

Rang my local gp who said off to emergency for you. 6 hours later and am home again. Had an ultrasound which showed my appendix has flared up but nothing else unusual so they sent me home???? I would have thought they'd keep me in if my appendix was flared up. Oh well.

Oh and they have sent a letter to my local gp to send me for a blood test to check my hormone levels

Sigh....I am 47 years old and had hoped all this was over and done with ahhh well will see what happens next time.

Like Cindy59, 3 days after my 53rd birthday, and 10-1/2 months since my last period, it hit again. It started off kind of odd, so I wasn't really sure that's what it was. I noticed a couple of days of light, clear discharge, after not having any discharge since my periods stopped. I didn't think too much of it, though, until last night when it became heavier and warranted a pantyliner, which I had to change within an hour. The discharge was a watery, dark yellow, and that in itself had me worried, and I thought I might have an infection of some kind. I was feeling lousy in general and couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. So I put in a tampon, since I wasn't sure the thin pads I had would hold me through the night, and had a very restless night. When I changed the tampon this morning, there was that same darkish discharge, but with blood in it as well, and that's when I had that ah-ha moment--this is no infection, this is a period! DAMN! In retrospect, I understand the breakouts I had on my face last week (I even kidded that my body was acting more like 13 than 53) and the bloated feeling I've had for a couple of days. Because my vaginal tissue is very dry and thin, anything that penetrates it is painful, so I opted not to use anymore tampons; it also allows me to monitor what's going on. Now I'm just bleeding lightly, with a little bit of a crampy feeling and a little bit of a headache. I was going to call the doctor when I thought it was something else, but I think I'll wait now. If it gets really heavy, I'll call her. But I'm due to go in for my regular exam in October anyway, so if this ends up being a "normal" period, I'll just wait til then. Like the rest of you, I'm feeling really blue that I have to start the count all over again, and that this may happen several more times before all is said and done--especially after reading that so many of you ladies had periods well after the 12-month mark. Good luck to all of us getting through this period in our lives (pun intended)!

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum. I've never joined one before. But, when I got my period after 14 months free and clear, I googled it and found you folks. I definitely got the most info and relief from worry from you all! Thank you for that! It's interesting that I found the most help on a gardening forum, and not a single medical one! I like you gals!

So, my story. I am 49 years old. Started with irregular periods a couple of years ago. Basic textbook experience. The hot flashes hit me with a vengeance about a year and a half ago. After 6 months of the flashes and night sweats, I started on black cohosh. I cannot tell you how much that relieved my flashes and night sweats! Im still on it now, even though i read about not taking it more than 6 months. I can't find any useful studies on long term use of black cohosh, because they don't exist! If any of you have info on it, I'd love to get it, as would my doctor!

Anyway, I got my period four days ago, after not having one for 14 months. I was shocked! However, in retrospect, it made sense, because I was feeling bloated and my breasts hurt terribly for a week before. I just didn't even think I'd get my period again!

I'm not going to run to the doctor. This was a period, with all it's misery!

Thanks gals,

Any advice or wisdom is most appreciated and welcome!!

Thank you!

Hi everyone! I'm 59 and have had no period for around 3 years, but for the last couple of weeks, I had been having lots of mucus, similar to what I would have before my period. Then yesterday, I started spotting. Right away I thought I was dying, but then after thinking back a little, I've been feeling just like a did when I have a period. Sad, moody, cramping, tired, etc. I'm so relieved to find out that others have had the same symptoms and lived to tell about it! LOLOLOL

Good Morning!
I just joined this forum because my period is making me absolutely crazy! I went through years of having my period come frequently with spotting in between. Had biopsies, transvaginal ultrasound and was told it was hormonal. FINALLY, this April's heavy period seemed to be it....a tiny spotting in June......I was beginning to relax when out of the blue, It's Back!! I am so frustrated! I don't want to start with the biopsies and transvaginal ultra sounds and waiting for results again!!!!! Aside from the constant anxiety every single time I go to the bathroom!!

Wow, I didn't have a period for at least a year, I'm terrible about keeping track of that stuff, but when I had my last pap the Doc told me that having a period would not be a good thing, so like an idiot I went on google to find out why!!! OMG it said I should go to the Doc right away because it may be cancer! Thank you all for this forum, I thought the worst.

I have so enjoyed reading all your stories and finding out that I have nothing to worry about..Actually wished I had found this forum before I had a panic attack..Like many of you, I went close to 13 mos without a period and then out of the dern blue I started..Called the gyno..had the vaginal ultrasound..biopsies..all that song and dance and it all came back normal..Went 24 days and boom once again have that Auntie flo...I agree who decided that after a year without a period you are in full menopause? huh huh...I will turn 54 in November and YES I have paid my dues and ready for this all to be done..

I decided that they need to make a pill you take..Go sit on the toilet and your whole uterus falls out and you are officially done..ugh..

So glad to know that so many women out there goes thru this but of course it doesn't solve things..

I went 13 months without then got my period full blast on Christmas Day 2012. It lasted 3-4 days and I haven't gotten one since. When I went for my annual pap smear, I mentioned it to the doctor and she scheduled me for an ultrasound. It came back normal. She still wants to do a biopsy b/c she said it's not normal to have a period after a year without, and it could be cancer, so she needs to rule that out with the biopsy. My appt. is this coming Tuesday. Uuugggg.

I almost didn't schedule the biopsy since the ultrasound was normal, BUT, I would never forgive myself if cancer cells are later found and I did nothing about it.

From reading this post, it seems like getting a period after a year is quite normal. (I'm 53).

Hi everyone! I'm new to the site, actually I just signed up after reading this thread. I am really impressed with how open so many of you have been!

This topic caught my attention because I'm 37 and have been without a period for 10 months until today. I have a doctor appointment in about a month for them to check things out, but I'll admit, I'm a bit apprehensive. I haven't had insurance for several years, and because of that, I haven't had any type of check up in that time.

Has anyone had this type of issue prior to the 'standard' menopause age?

I appreciate any advice anyone can lend! Otherwise, I hope everyone has a great week!

Thanks,

Elizabeth

I am soooo glad I found this forum. I am 44 and went 16 months without a period. Then today, PERIOD! Called the doc and will take blood tests, etc and plan to get pelvic ultrasound. I am not sexually active (please don't judge)and so I refuse to get a transvaginal one done now because I am not comfortable with that. I am confident all is well, but it sure freaked me out to get a period. Sure liked being free from them. Oh well. Thank God I found out tonight that this happens to many women. I did not know this was normal. Who talks about this stuff? Glad you guys do!!!

I am glad I found this forum. It was 10 months for me without a period. I was so happy. But, Friday night it all started again. Heavy, crampy and clotty. My breast had been sore for the past week or 2 but thought nothing like this was going on. I sure figured that I must have been a horrible person in my past life to have this start up again with being so close to that gold ring (the end). I guess I will have to start up the count again and hope that I can make it to the finish line. I had my left ovary removed last year as it was 55mm. It had a fibroid cyst attached and after biopsy it was benign. During the removal the doctor did vaginal scrape to make sure all was good and it was. Now I have to start the count again. That makes me sad. I needed the laugh from NMmom about the pill to give us to make the uterus fall out. haha I am all for that! We are all in this together. We will get through this as all our ancestors have before us. Thanks for listening.

12 months and 6 days and I got my period this morning, not sure yet if it's spotting but I got the cramps also. It's nice to know it is normal so I am not worring but I was hoping I was all done with getting my period. Funny when I told my husband on 7/6 it was a year and he asked me "How do you feel abou this?" and I said "Are you kidding, I am thanking god I am done with getting my period." I suppose I spoke too soon. I can say I got some stomach bug on Tuesday night and was sick as a dog, sicker than I ever have been in my life, maybe it set it off, who knows but I am not worried maybe it will be light and over within a few days and I can go another year without having a period. Thanks for this site and others comments to help me not to worry.

This just happened to me! After skipping 10 periods, I got it back two months in a row, then just skipped two more. Just had my annual GYN visit and he was concerned. He said if you have not bled in 10 months, then bleed it could be a problem, so now I am freaking out! The periods I got after skipping were just like normal periods....I ovulated, then two weeks later got the period. Scheduled for an ultrasound for next Friday..........any of you who posted in here who had to go for testing after skipping so many period have results to post? Thanks!!!

Sooo happy & relieved to have found this forum! It's 3:30 in the morning and I've been scouring the web because I just got my period yesterday after 10 months of nothing and I was very worried about it. I have a couple books on menopause & they both say to get checked out if you suddenly get your period after not having one for more than 6 months. I thought something might be terribly wrong (& I'm not one to worry about my health issues, usually). After reading posts on this site from so many women who've gone 10 months (and longer! Ugh!) I feel like I'm normal again and can hopefully get back to sleep now. Thanks to you all!

Wow, I don't know if I feel normal but last year, Sept 6th I had my Period, October 9th we were in a motorcycle accident and my period never came back for a solid 10 mos, very light spotting twice but never touched the pad, then Thursday I started spotting, I was told that as long as you don't need to change your pad twice in a 12 hour period, its not considered a period! Well Friday night when I got home from work! BAMMMM the first 2 hours home, I changed it 4 times! Been sick all weekend, clots every time I urininate! ugggg 48 yrs old I thought I scaved through this crap without a hysto! My question is, will it keep coming back monthly now, or do I just stay prepared for when and if it does! I can honestly say as my name states! I AM TO OLD FOR THIS CRAP!

Ha it took a few hrs to read these posts! It did make me feel a little better. I am 58 and 1/2 and I finally did not have a period for 6 months and wam! Full on cramps, bloated, fatigue, major depression, head numbness etc. today is day 4 with no end in sight! Have been having severe lowered back pain for 2 months and last week stomach tenderness, so I guess it was on its way! Lucky me! I have read that this can continue on into the 60's . I eat very healthy , exercise , do yoga etc. I have a cousin that went until she was 59 but I think I will surpass her! Just wishing it didn't make me feel so miserable !
Hope this helped someone!

Well....here is my sordid story: I am a 54 year old teacher. I always wear black pants when I knew my period was on it's merry way and kept an emergency pair of and undies in the closet. In 2009, I had a period in October and skipped November and December...and started on schedule in January. In 2010...the exact same thing happened at the exact same time. In 2011, again, the same thing. The GYN told me welcome to peri menopause. Last October, I had a period, and once again, skipped November and December. But wonders of wonders, skipped January, February, March, April, May, and June!!!! YIPPEEE!!!! Then...two weeks ago, I felt that old familiar twinge in the ovaries, the "Woe is ME" mode reared it's ugly head...as did the Wicked Witch of the West attitude, backache, headache, breast tenderness and crampy bloated feeling...you know, the usual symptoms that I have had for over 41 years. This morning....It. Is. Back. Yep, 8 glorious months without the monster. Called the GYN and spoke with the nurse. She said usually if you haven't had a period in one year...you can consider yourself free and clear...no more periods. However, that is not always the case and if it feels like a period, it usually is a period...you just get to start counting ALL OVER again. Great. I go to my regular yearlyexam next month...Doc will not see a happy woman. But it is good to know I have company. I am 54...I had my tubes tied....I don't need it...don't want it...and I really thought I was through. HA!

I thought mine was gone too. Went 10 months nothing except hot flashes. Now it is back for more days then I would like. I am 50 Dr told me menopause cause of hot flashes but no period. I thought it was finally gone so back to counting months again. No cramps with this one used to have severe cramps when I was younger. I have had my period since sixth grade. It is like come on have you not had it long enough or what? Aggrevated is all only 2 months then it would have been 12 full months but no. Here it is again. I am finding it gross now being without it so long. I was so happy it was finally almost over. Well I don't have good luck. Now 12 more months of it coming and going as it pleases. Nothing I can do about it. It's here no choice. Not so happy anymore. I keep telling myself after this one it is over for good. It is having it's last hooray. Praying crossing fingers and toes and whatever else I can cross. It is time to go away forever my dear monthly friend.PLEASE!!!!!!

Like so many of you, I am so happy to have found this forum. I truly am not alone! I will be 55 in a few weeks and like all of you, still have my period. It's so frustrating because your body teases you and then WHAM! it's back. It would be tolerable if it was like so many others that I know. A regular flow of around 3 days, but not me. I have always gone for 7-8 days and heavy with all of the PMS symptoms. About 10 years ago, it stopped for 5 months, when it started again, it came with a vengence. I go through a pad an hour for 2-3 days, the rest of the week would be considered normal. I have soaked through at work, at the store, you name it. Fast forward 10 years or so. My last period was last September. My doctor declared that I finally entered menopause at my annual physical. Nope. In February it started again. I was devastated. But it was light, so I thought ok, I guess I can deal with it. A couple of weeks ago I got the breast tenderness and backache and am back to my heavy period. Only the headaches and cramping are way worse than ever. I'm on day 8 and still flowing heavy. During the 5 blissful months that I didn't have it, I had horrible hot flashes. They were constant, almost coming in waves. But I thought hey, I'll take it, it's just the hormones going crazy. My doctor was puzzled because my mother and maternal grandmother both stopped in their mid 40's and daughters usually follow suit. I have had all the tests. Everything is healthy. I don't want a hysterectomy for something that happens naturally. Thanks for letting me share and I'll just keep hoping. It has to end sometime!

Hi! Glad to find you all. I am 48 and have had 2 periods in 1 year. Prior to this I was a clockwork kinda gal until I hit my early 40's. At 45, surprise! I became pregnant with baby #4 which was a total shock to my system but I eventually processed it and had a beautiful, healthy, little boy who we later found out has Down Syndrome. I opted not to have an amnio during my pregnancy because I was already in shock and just wanted to enjoy what I could of this pregnancy. My other 3 kids are 20, 18 and 16. 2 boys and a girl. My baby is now a Toddler at 2. Anyway! So I don't contracept but I use NFP religiously since my last pregnancy and it hasn't failed me yet. I keep hoping I'm near the end and my FSH tests say that I am close but clearly I have a little ways to go. I find it interesting that my periods are spaced 6 months apart almost to the week. Does anyone know if patterns are still possible even during premenopause?

Hi, like many of you, this thread is giving me hope. I am 53, and had my last period in early May 2014. I began a period again on March 30, 2015. It's 11 days later and I still have it! So this 'pause' was 10 1/2 months, and the one prior to that was five months. I had just given away all my pads because my husband was nagging me to 'downsize' everything in the house - including the pads. So the cramps, brain fog, fatigue and flooding are back, but I hope this really is the 'last hurrah' of one more egg. We shall see...

Thank you to everyone sharing on this thread - for years, now, sisters! I searched all over for answers, and received the best answer here. I just turned 50, and had not had a period for 15 months. This weekend, all the old symptoms were back and I have a full-on period in all of its glory...I am now not freaking out over it. It is so very gratifying to find a place of common and lived wisdom that does not purely rely on medical rule-making measure.

Hi all, well after 11.5 months of no period and getting so close to that big M finish line (I'm 46), I started my period today!! Same old symptoms too. Oh well, must be the Spring thing. I had breast pain last week, the egg white discharge and some cramping on one side. Why I was so surprised to get my period is beyond me...I should have recognized the signs two weeks ago! How quickly we forget.

Oh boy. First, I just want to say thank you. All these posts have really helped me. I'm 46, 47 on Tuesday. I've struggled with anxiety, eventually becoming agoraphobic for almost 10 years and a sufferer of migraines and vertigo attacks. Despite my constant whining, no doc would ever believe it was hormonal. Even though when I have been pregnant, I feel perfect, no anxiety, no agoraphobia, migraines, vertigo, etc.

This past year, I have experienced a freedom I hadn't felt in a long time. Clarity. Wellness. My last period was Jan 26th of 2014. I did spot very minimally for about 3 days in July 2015. I pretended that didn't happen, haha, and that Jan 26th of 2015 marked my completion of menopause. Joke is on my, as I began to spot, extremely light the other night and then, TMI, I passed a small amount of dark red mucus. Figuring I was getting ready to have a period. Another joke. So cramps yesterday, I just knew it was coming but today, still...nothing.

In retrospect, the vertigo attacks I had a few days ago and the migraine were clues. Awful! But where is my period?

Lol. I even thought, wow, what if I'm pregnant? I mean I did spot in July, which was 10mo ago, right? Maybe the TMI mucus was a "show". Gosh, that scared me. Also, my husband said I'd have to name it Jesus Jr. since hubby had a V-sect about 9yrs ago.

I do have an appointment next Wednesday. But at least now I'm not lost in thoughts of endometrial cancer. Ugh. Googling "postmenopause bleeding" is NOT a good thing.

Weird too, my daughter is on the pill and she began spotting and had a mini-period sooner than her pills indicated a period AND my sister had a strange period, as well, tho she's not peri menopausal yet.

I just want the vertigo to go away :( thanks for listening and so grateful for your stories and experiences.

Oh wow! I am not alone! I've been going through peri meno since I was 38 and full meno since I was 44. I am now 50. I went 8 months without a period and then had one that lasted 8 days with normal symptoms that I had in the past.

This time I went 10 months without a period and then Bam! Here it came about 5 days ago. And here it is May. Springtime!!

What is up with the 10 months and Springtime thing??

Well, if nothing else, I feel more "normal" after reading this thread. I'm 51 years old, and have always breezed through the whole period thing all my life (I know, hate me, it's okay). Several of my half-sisters and step-sisters had horrible symptoms, one not able to conceive, one had a total hysterectomy in her early 20's bc it was so bad, etc. etc. So a year ago, my periods started getting lighter, then I skipped a few... and then.... they totally stopped. I waited, expecting the hot flashes, mood swings, all the horrible things I've heard about menopause - and nothing happened. Trust me, I'm not complaining, I was elated, bc I kept thinking in the back of my head since I'd always had 'easy' periods, menopause was going to be awful to make up for it. So a year went by, I patted myself on the back, pinned my badge on my chest, and.... moved to another town.... and in with a female roommate.... a YOUNGER female roommate. Guess what? Three months ago, I had some spotting... didn't think anything of it. Two months ago, more than spotting, but not enough for a tampon.... but then I noticed in the bathroom trash that tell-tale strip from a pad... so I ask my roommate if she was on her period and she said yes... and I was thinking "son-of-a-b..." .... so a couple weeks ago.... my nipples are sore... for no good reason I can tell you that !! And yesterday.... I had to go buy tampons. Seriously? THIS SUCKS !!!! I told my roommate she owe's me chocolate and wine for this sh.. !!!!

Hi everyone, I am 45 and have had hot flushes for a few years building in intensity. I was on Mirena coil for heavy periods and asked for it to be removed as was certain something was going on, you just feel different don't you? So I had no period the following month and then BAM, heaviest in my life for the next three months. Then lighter until they stopped in October 2014. No period since, loads of menopause symptoms, and then once again...BAM...heavy as hell period, had pain in back like sciatica for days before. I am wondering if I should go to GP and tell them, ask for checks too see what my hormones are doing? Any advice? Could it be a sign of a problem? The odd thing is that when I had periods before my hot flushes went, they haven't this time, still struggling!

Can't deny that it has made me weepy as others have confided on here. I really thought I was 4 months and on a clear run with dreams of getting my badge too! So glad I found this site. I blog about menopause, how I quit teaching as couldn't cope suddenly and how I am finding it now. I wanted to raise awareness particularly of early onset as my GP told me I had a nervous breakdown a few years ago when I think it was my Fibromyalgia and perimenopause symptoms. On my record now so nothing I can do about it.

I am 54 and last month had a period after 12 months period free. Now 28 days later here comes another one. My hot flashes which were almost unbearable have stopped but now I'm bummed to have to go thru all that again. I was concerned until I found this site and learned this is common. My mother had a hysterectomy at 35 so I don't have a reference for what's in store.

I JUST discovered this forum and love it! But why is it hiding in a house decorating website? This is a conversation topic that I wish were more public and accessible. My periods started to slow down (every 2-3 months) at 53, now at 54 I have not had a period in 8 months and was getting sadly resigned to saying hello to menopause...until I stumbled onto this website and NOW I have hope that my 'badge' is not quite ready for me to take. I might be in the extreme minority, but I have always loved getting my period. I LOVE the surge of hormones, the fullness in my uterus, and the brightly colored display/clumps of sloughing. Do you think my hormonal system would be fooled if I tried a manual lactation pump?

Joining the sisterhood tonight on this forum! Spent most of my adult life on the pill, my ob/gyn wanted me off due to my "advanced" age, so I went off it in January. Hormone tests in February showed that I was in full blown menopause. Went through about 2 weeks of non-stop hot flashes in February and then nothing, nothing at all, life was great...until now!! UGH! Period returned yesterday with a vengeance, going through several tampons each day, cramps, bloating...just like when I was a teenager...yuck...I was so enjoying menopause ;-).....

I'm 39 and up until this past January I've had clockwork cycles with very little issues. Over the past year or so I've spiralled into symptoms of hot flashes and marked brain fog and irritability. My youngest is almost 3 and I breastfed him so my cycles were interrupted for 2 years. He only completely weaned this past November! My sleeping was so terrible and I think on top of that my body started perimenopause as confirmed by a blood test 3 months ago. After 6 straight months of no period I've started my period on Friday but I'm actually happy about it. I've always felt more predictable with regular cycles and now I'm not sure what my body's doing. My GP wants me on hormone replacement because of my age so my question is do any of you ladies take hormones and what is your opinion on it?

Hi Everyone,

I'm so glad I found this forum. I went almost 10 months with no period. Went through major hot flashes, they calmed down to almost nothing. But a week and a half ago, I got my period. Seems to be small amount on the pad, but when I wipe, it's all there. This has been on and off for almost 2 weeks. Its goes from red to Brown. Has anyone had this?

It's crazy isn't it? It amazes me that so many of us go through this but not many medical professionals seem to have any answers. As I said in my previous post, I had an appt. scheduled and I went. Regular gyn. checkup and blood work....my estradiol (I think) and FSH...got a call a few days later and the doc told me I was in menopause. This term is confusing to me, even the doc didn't really address my confusion. Just said that I shouldn't have bleeding, if I do I"ll need to be seen again. And, technically I haven't been bleeding. Just spotting and mostly just seen on TP.....brown, stringy stuff. Sometimes it's a little pink but not much. So, since my post I had two of these episodes. Crampy was my only other regular period symptom. Vertigo a day or so before and feel like crap again. After almost a whole year of bliss. It's a cruel joke!! Oh and the doc did say that it was my ovaries last "Hurrah"....joke's on me, apparently.

I am going into my third week! My husband thinks I should call my doctor but I think its just my last hurrah. I am 48. Does anyone else think I should be concerned?? thanks!

So you might want to get it checked just to rule out cancer or infection. My dnc came back ok.. But you need to rule anything out. Fibroids can make your symptoms also.. Keep us posted ;)

I'm 52. Just went 4 months without! Was getting excited! Nope! Here it is again. Along with brain fog, cramps and did have breast tenderness. Recent blood tests said I'm not there yet. I can't wait! Night sweats, dizziness, fogginess, forgetting stuff, so damn annoying! :(

I am 48. Was on the pill forever and finally decided to go off in January. My period didn't come back after 3 cycles so my doctor ran blood tests.and I was told my FSH levels said I was postenopausal! So after coming to terms with that......here we are in late July and I am pretty sure I just started my period. It seems like a normal period in how it started and is progressing. I'm a bit freaked out. Can FSH levels be false or change?

I thought I was done after 6 months, going on 7 and wam ! Full heavy clots cramping!wow last year I missed one period .I turned 50 then went 6 months thinking I was done or should I say hoping! But I had symptoms every month like I was gonna start. Breast tenderness, weight gain foggy memory, hot flashes lasted 3 months and went away .Heart palpitations! Scary ! A friend of mine went a year and started and her husband made her go to the dr. And good thing too .She had a full hysterectomy and they thought they got everything in time but test come back she had cancer and it had spread now she has to to chemo and radiation. So you all with questions about going to dr .most definitely should have a checkup.I am a runner and big on kickboxing and boxing.and my energy level and weight gain is awful.Glad I found this sight .50 is not so bad !

I'm 48.5 and no flo for 8 months. Major headache two days ago and constipation is sure sign of impending flo to come. I have not had unprotected sex with husband in 22 years, always used a condom. Reading all the comments here makes me think it could be a while longer. I'm looking forward to it actually. The sex not the flo! Lol

Hello ladies !

56 years old here. Periods were very regular ( and super heavy) up until last October. Then never had another one after that. No spotting, no cramps, nothing. But the night sweats I had been having for 3 years turned into 24/7 hot flashes.

For the last two days I have been very nauseous, and tired. But no hot flashes, which I thought was kind of weird, because they are usually every day. But. I thought , hey no period since October, and no hot flashes for a couple days, maybe it's all really over finally !

About an hour ago, I started to get one of those "period" backaches. Say it isn't so, please ! Nothing yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed !!

Hi ladies. It's such a relief to know its not just me having problems. I've been getting erratic periods now for four years but gradually I would go every other month without one & then every couple of months.leading up to now, last year I went 5 months without period and then they came back. This year I have gone 8 months without one and was convinced I was going to reach the year as my doctor says he won't give me HRT untill then. I have just had period again & I'm gutted. Also when I get my periods , I usually come down with something first, this time it was flu so its as if low immune system sets it off. Thanks for your experiences. It helps x

Hi ladies !

I'm back.

I'm 56. I posted a couple weeks ago because I had not had a period in 10 months, and had been having serious hot flashes up until a couple weeks ago when I posted. At that time I was getting the weird feelings of maybe a period. Combined with the fact that the hot flashes had completely stopped, which was weird.

Well, I started my period yesterday morning. It has been 28 hours since it started, and the last twelve hours have been super heavy. A tampon soaked through every hour, and soaked through my pad, also. I feel really ,reallyweak and tired. If the flow doesn't slow down or lighten up a little soon, I will call my doctor.

All this after 10 months of no period. Sigh.

Hi Tilekitchen88 I feel bad for you! same thing happened to me, mine was super heavy and lasted 2 weeks straight then after a few days stated again., My doc recommended a D&C. I had the procedure and 2 weeks later I started but it was a lot lighter. I have not had one since and that was in July. But yep all that after 10 months of nothing for me as well! My TSH level says 96! Hope you feel better!

It's been approximately 14 months since last light spotting then two days ago it happened again and has now turned into a full blown period.

Last year I had a scan etc and they found nothing. Went to the Docs today and I've been referred for a further scan.

So basically I've had two 'periods 'in 26 months. thr locum seemed to think I might still be peri menopausal.

All the symptoms of perimenopause: night sweats, achy back and hips, headaches, I had. Did a little research on what foods to eat to help with the symptoms and came across a book written by a doctor about wheat. I stopped eating wheat and all the tiredness, pains, aches, sweating and migraine headaches also stopped. Have been eating very cleanly, organic foods. My last period was in March '15 (I am 50) and two days ago I got my period again! A week prior to that I felt a sharp pain I guess in the area of my right and left ovary. My breast were enlarged and tender, I was gaining weight and I was even having vaginal discharge. I erroneously blamed it on prednisone coming out of my system which I was taking previously for 8 days. ( I later found out via a second opinion that it should have never been prescribed to me by the first doctor to relieve an insect bite!) Now I do not think that it may have been the medicine, but rather the natural course of my body because the greatest indicator of that was that I started cleaning fanatically everything in the house (like I would before every period) and that could not have been due to the medicine clearing out of my body. I never new that one would also release an egg during these types of periods. I have learned quite a bit here. Thank you and hope all a healthy weekend and rest of the the year!

I have gone 3 months without a period. I have heard so many horror stories about being post menopausal that I keep wishing back my periods! Why is the typical textbook protocol with these dr's to start doing biopsies, etc...just because a woman gets a period 16 months after no periods for 12?...I agree with whoever said we need a 10 year grace period once our periods stop because if you think about it, we've had our periods for what...40 plus years? Our bodies had to adjust to that roller coaster and then Dr's give you only 1 year for periods to stop and expect our bodies to adjust that quickly before they start running all of these tests???? Does anyone else see what's wrong with that?

I've been reading more posts and while I do understand there can be complications from bleeding after going a year with no periods, its always best to get checked. I just wish this was a more simple process...more cut and dry instead of the up and down roller coaster ride that we go on when we have our periods and then another roller coaster ride trying to adjust to not having periods anymore. I am very new to the menopause thing with so much to learn because no one in my family ever talked about it. I feel like at my age (51), I should know way more than I do but thank goodness for places like this! thank you to all who share your stories and experiences!

Well, I too am a 10 monther, spotted pretty light last two days, thought I'd call my dr to see if I should go back on pill. I've been off for 8 months thinking cool, I'm in the zone. I'm 48, haven't gotten pregnant in the last 8 mos so done, right!? Now reading these, I feel better, just don't want anymore babies. Dr of course said, come in do an ultrasound and blood work, ugh no thanks. Hoping it will pass and will try to order the pill again.

Hi all... had my 55th birthday 2 weeks ago. In 2013 I went for 9 months with no period. Then 3 regular periods. In 2014 I went for 9 months with no period and then stopped again after 3 of them. Now, 2015, I haven't had period since Feb, and here it is almost Christmas and I'm starting to spot. Have had night sweats since 2002, and hot flashes, anxiety attacks, and most of the other associated horrors for the last 7-8 years. Am beginning to think I'll have periods until I drop dead. Egad. 3 years in a row I've been only 2-3 months away from 'official' menopause. iSad. :(

Hi Ladies! I've read some of you saying after 12 months your period is back, heavy and lasting more than 10 days! Do call your doctor all the research I've done says to advise your physician. I'm 54 just went 8 months and surprise its back! My hot flashes stopped about a month ago. 4 Years ago I ignored my heavy, and long lasting bleeding. Contributed it to menopause... I waited so long to see my gyn that of it had not been just a couple of days before Christmas he would have admitted me for a blood transfusion! Be careful with your blood loss eat high protein foods and iron enriched foods to keep your blood levels up! I'm hoping this will not be a repeat of 4 years ago.

I haven't posted since July. So far, so good. Really hoping that was the last hurrah for me. It's just really comforting to know you guys are all out there going through similar experiences. Being a woman sure ain't easy. You'd think after years of monthly bleeding, cramps, giving birth, etc, that we could ,at the least, be spared all this grief and worry. Also, I always get a chuckle that this conversational thread is under a home design site. Here's wishing you all a Happy New Year (better late then never)

It's awesome that a thread started almost 12 years ago is still giving women peace of mind. I was a little freaked out that after almost 8-10 months I started spotting 2 days ago and now bleeding. I've had irregular period for as long as I can remember and don't track them, which is why I'm not sure if its been 8 or 10 months since my last one. I just hope I don't have heavy bleeding (i.e. catch up to all the missed ones). Ugh!

Period free since May 2015 - 8 months and counting, till TODAY. I am sad, angry, frustrated, confused and grateful to have found this thread......misery does love company. I'm 54 and thought I was well on my way to the 12 month mark until 2 days ago when I noticed a little "color" on TP, brownish pink, barely noticeable but still put me on high alert and then the couple of weird headaches I had less than week ago started to make sense along with some slight breast tenderness - how quickly we forget...... prior to this I had gone almost 6 months period free........ waaaaaaaaa! make it stop. Please? lol.........

I too was relieved to stumble onto this site. I am 49 will be 50 in a few weeks. I went 11 months without a period ...I think did have a small spottiness back in May 2015 that lasted only a few days not sure if that counts as a period ?Started getting the cramps, backache, headache and bam started very light bleeding yesterday. I talked to my sister and a cousin who both said they also had periods after going almost a year without one which relieved my nervousness some. After reading all the above post it seems this is somewhat common. Still will call my doc on Monday but feeling much more at ease after reading all your stories, thank you for sharing.

I'm thrilled to have found this site! I'm on my 7th month no period...turning 50 on the 9th of this month. I missed a period here and there from 46 years old then it simply stopped. Now, I would love everyone's opinion, I have been single for 4 years now, have not had sex in those 4 years, I really wonder if being sexually active or not had any bearing on menopause? I hadn't missed a period while being active but the min. It stopped, say 3 months of no sex I missed my first period. Just a thought. I have a friend who is 54 and very sexually active and hasn't started missing periods..

Responding to Amber M., 30 years old is way young to have started peri menopause! Goodness, I haven't even heard of it starting that young. But, that doesn't mean anything, I'm sure someone else has heard of it. I had a tubal at age 27, I'm 50 now and haven't had a period in 7 months..that's a more normal age frame. If you don't want children, which is obvious with the tubal, and you've had all the tests and you are healthy, I wouldn't worry, maybe you are just an early bird :). Do you have kids?

Thankfully, I just found this site today. In May 2015, at age 57, I started spotting after not having had a period for 14 months. I had an ultrasound showing the uterus lining at 15.3 mm (my doctor said anything over 5mm would require a biopsy). Before I had the biopsy I got my period which lasted for 3 weeks. I thought that had to be the final hurrah. In December I had a follow up ultrasound and blood work that gave every indication it was over. Now it is March 2016, I'm 58 (soon to be 59) and have been having a mucus-like discharge for 3 weeks. I kept thinking it would stop, and it did, when I got my period 2 days ago. I'm at my wits end. I see my obgyn on Monday. Not sure what to expect. My mother had cervical cancer when I was a child. I simply want to be done with this. Thanks for giving me a safe place to vent.

So glad I found this! I am now 40, but last year, April was my last cycle. I had a d&c on May 1st due to heavy bleeding. I went back to my dr. And test showed a very thin lining of the uterus and normal hormone levels. I was given some hormonal medication and told that in a week to 2, I would start a light cycle. Still no period, now for 10 mos. Went thru extreme hot flashes, not so much anymore. But weight gain is also obvious. Any thoughts?

Did i-Cool for Menopause not work for
you? Did it fail to relieve you of your hot flashes and night sweats?

If so, you might be entitled to a refund.
As part of a class action settlement, you can submit a claim for your
refund
here: http://i-coolclassaction.com/claim-verification/

It only takes a minute. If i-Cool for Menopause did
not work for you, make sure you get your portion of the settlement funds before
April 4th or it will be too late! Here is the notice:

NOTICE
OF CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT

Doe v. DSM Nutritional Products, LLC et al.
Case No. 30-2011-00510631-CU-MT-CXC (Orange County Superior Court)

If
you bought DSM Nutritional Products, LLC’s “i-Cool for Menopause” product you
could be entitled to money from a legal settlement.

A Settlement has been proposed in a class
action lawsuit with DSM Nutritional Products, LLC (“DSM” or “Defendant”)
involving DSM’s product, i-Cool for Menopause. A class action lawsuit pending
in the Superior Court of California for the County of Orange entitled Doe v. DSM Nutritional Products,
LLC et al.
(Case No.
30-2011-00510631-CU-MT-CXC) may affect your rights. Plaintiff Jane Doe claims
that Defendant misrepresented i-Cool for Menopause’s efficacy for the reduction
of menopausal symptoms, specifically hot flashes. DSM vigorously denies these
allegations and the Court has not decided who is right.

A class action lawsuit was filed against
DSM Nutritional Products, LLC (“DSM” or “Defendant”). In this lawsuit,
Plaintiff claims, among other things, that the phrase “clinically proven to
safely reduce hot flashes by up to 85%” on Defendants package was false or
misleading in violation of California’s Consumer Legal Remedies Act (Cal. Civ.
Code §§ 1750, et seq.)
and California Unfair Competition Law (Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §§ 17500, et seq.) The Action further
alleges that Defendant’s alleged misrepresentations were designed to, and did,
lead Plaintiff and others similarly situated (collectively the “Class”) to
believe that the Product could cause an 85% reduction in hot flashes when it could
not. DSM Nutritional Products, LLC denies that the phrase or any other
representations are false, misleading or otherwise unlawful and the Court has not decided who is
right.

Your
Options In This Settlement

File a Claim. You must file a claim to
remain in the Class. You will be bound by the Court’s rulings, but you can
object to the Settlement. Claim Forms must be signed and postmarked (or
submitted online) by April 4, 2016. By remaining in the Class, you will release
claims against Defendant as outlined in the detailed Notice, which is available here.

Exclude yourself and keep your right to
sue the Defendant. Your written request for exclusion must be postmarked by
April 4, 2016.

Object to the Settlement and/or appear in
Court, only if you remain in the Class. You may hire your own attorney for
these purposes, but do not have to. Your written request to object or appear
must be postmarked by April 29, 2016. The Court will hold a hearing (the
“Fairness Hearing”) on May 20, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. (PST) in Department CX-102 at
the courthouse located at 751 W Santa Ana Blvd, Santa Ana, CA 92701 to decide

Well I feel relieved that this appears to be normal as such, the period striking back after many months thing. I just got mine yesterday, an actual period and some yuk clots, feeling ok but def can 'feel' it going on in the lower tummy type thing. I think a few mini hot flushes are back too after about 4 mths with the odd mini one only. I was a bit worried too in that I had sex without contraception at beginning of year (didn't carry that on but oh well, it was a nice way to see in 2016, lol) and have thought since, hmmm I wonder if that was a bit risky! He's okay so I don't mean STI wise. It was just like the old days (been a couple of years in between drinks, lol) and I could've sworn I wasn't this 54 yr old going through meno which I was worried I was going to notice a 'difference'.. So maybe my ovaries have perked up after it and gone, hey she still is good for it! Nah, I really think they're ashy prunes and I'm just lucky I'm still this sexual creature. Is this a safe forum to say all this???? Back to the period concerns, yeah, I hope this won't go on too much, I don't mind the odd one after months but I'm bit anxious of this being a heavy and long one. With all the crappy meno negative symptoms that I've had for the past couple of years, I still embrace this time of my life and count my blessings I haven't had it too bad at all. Gawd, I still don't want to have to buy sanitary products again rather than just get my 35 yr old daughter to give me some of hers to get through this - wishful thinking maybe.

So I might be protected next time to prevent a miracle baby being made.

Nancy-Michael, feeling for you. Yes I'm concerned too re anaemia as that always plagued me pre menopause. Thankfully my return period has calmed down. And the mini hot flashes are really going on too so my hormones are full on playing up. I have a friend same age like us who is struggling with hot flashes and other awful things. Geez, I don't have any advice apart from compassion for you and others struggling but also remember the anxiety and resistance if you life, that we put upon ourselves when 'suffering' exacerbates the whole hormone imbalance. Do you notice that when you're all het up, the flushes comes on big time? Just a thought and my own view and based on some info too that it's important to keep, i dunno, peaceful and accepting without sounding la-la about it. Like all things in life, we gain nothing by resisting and raising our anxiety levels. But hope the periods do settle down for you so you can get back to good health at least.

I'm so glad to have found this site. I was only 4 months into no period but, I was so sure this was it. Cocky, huh? I'm 49 and in my family that's old for the change. Well, I was feeling a little crampy yesterday, thought nothing of it then, wham! Got my period. This sucks! I've discovered time and again what a lovely man my husband is. My moods sometimes take me by surprise and I will bore no one with my tales of hot flashes, night sweats. You've all been there. I hate going thru this but it's nice to read other women's experiences and knowing you're not alone. I keep it together enough in my life because I don't want to complain but inside somtimes, stormy weather. Thankfully, my marriage is strong but it's been hard at times. This is just one of those things that no man, regardless of how understanding he is, is gonna understand. Just want it to be over. Thanks for letting me vent.

Dear stangerbrooke,

I went 10 months without..... Twice! Currently I am in the ER waiting for blood work for anemia. My husband has been with me throughout, even helping with the gross stuff, and never a complaint.

Good luck from a 53yr old going thru the same issues.

I am glad I found this site. 7 months with no periods and the FSH test showed I was post-menopausal and now my period started last Saturday and still going :(

I had a lap surgery two weeks ago (tubo ovarian cyst - size of golf ball ) I though that the lap had something to do with my period coming back, but the OBGYN said that is not the case, but if it continuous for two more days or if it comes back in less than a month, I will need to call him to schedule a visit... this is so confusing..

Thank you for letting me vent :)

Of course i googled mine n found this. Im 45 n last summer fell into full blown hot flashes so unbearable i went to dr who said i had to wait before hormones so I got otc estroven n powdered soy from health food vitamin store n they eased up a bit. I last had a period in aug.2015. Then every month a lil spotting but nothing like a regular period. Then the hot flashes subsided n the spotting stopped n i thought great in the homestretch now n this morning woke up to whats starting as a regular period. But my things this. I dont like getting my period like anyone else but i do seem to be the only one who well how can i put it...i didn't feel much like a woman w out it. I actually would get a bit jealous of women still getting theirs. Crazy right? Is it cos im 45? It seems alot of women here are 50's? Does anyone else feel like this? I dunno i just felt weird not buying period supplies n well really unwomanly. Anyone relate???

Grrrr! I'm so fed up with this stuff. I am also so confused by the words menopause, post menopause, etc. I swear I'm writing a book called Menopause for Dummies. Don't you think that would be a great read? I digress...

So, I'd gone for about 11 months without a period and then I spotted for a week or so. Went to the doctor. He said all was fine and ordered blood tests. Estradiol and FSH. Once the results came in he called and told me I was "in menopause" and the spotting was nothing to worry about.

That was last May. So, as May will be upon me and I've not had a period, spotting, in fact, I've felt pretty spectacular..?I began to get excited again waiting for that 12mo deadline to approach. But guess what...after my husband and I had "nookie" I went to the bathroom and wiped and there was pink on the TP? WTH??? After that, the next day I saw a little tiny pink mucus you stuff on the TP and that was it.

Now what? Do I rush off to the doctor? Could I just have some dryness, atrophy? I read that can cause some bleeding due to the dryness. Did "in menopause" as the doctor told me, mean I would not see any bleeding? Was this even bleeding?

This whole experience, for the past couple years has been mind boggling! Here's what I want to know, if peri-menopause means leading up to, and post menopause means going 12months without a period what the heck does "in menopause" mean? And, what qualifies as a period?

Oh and is anyone itchy? OMG, I'm not itchy "inside" but rather all around the outside. I'm trying not to be graphic here.

Are we just all crazy??? Lmao

I am so glad I found this site! I am 58 and I went 15 months without a period. Started bleeding yesterday. I have had all the symptoms of getting my period for the past month. Sore breasts, bloating, pain, discharge. I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy last week because I thought it was related to my colon. All checked out fine. I was so excited not to have a heavy period anymore. This has been the healthiest year of my life! I do not want to have to go through all the tests again either. So glad to hear that this could just be a normal, late period. Going to Disney World with my grand kids next week so I'm praying it will be over by then. I still might call my doctor next month just to make her aware.

The comments here have helped so much and made me feel like I wasn't alone. Thank you!

Trying hard to do this as naturally as possible, though. It sure was great not having PMS and a period for 15 months. Absolutely heaven! Can't wait until this is really over!

Glad to have found this forum ; read the posts & now don't feel so all alone and frustrated. Ill be turning 54 at end of this month. Was wondering if anyone had undergone some health changes and then your period started ?! I started a heavy protein diet with lots of greens and have lost some weight, nothing major but was wondering if that triggered it ?! Or just a coincidence , I guess after reading prior posts. Totally bummed though:( boo!

Oh no Lynda that's terrible! I still plan to see my doctor for an ultra sound. I also plan to get a blood test. I can't believe you went 21 months! How old are you? I'm 58 and I sure hope I am done.

Vicki Lee, we had a great time at Disney with no bleeding. All symptoms are gone but I'm worried because I didn't bleed much and I had had such horrific symptoms that caused me to get the colonoscopy etc.

I sure wish our doctors were aware of how common it is to bleed after going a year without a period. A year does NOT necessarily mean no more periods. They need to change this rule. So many women worry needlessly about cancer when this isn't always the case. I understand it is better to be safe than sorry, though.

It would be great if we could move these comments to more of a personal site than Houzz.

OMG I am so glad that I found this thread. I did a Google search and it led me here. I know that this will sound weird, but I am glad that I am not the only one that is feeling weird/concerned/happy/ frustrated...lol Does that cover it all?

I have not had my period since my hubbies birthday Last August (2015), so right now I am sitting at 9 months! I just turned 50 the end of the year and I tell you, I am so ready to be done!! Like someone else that I read on here - I am the only female in my family that is still intact past 42! My mother had to have everything removed at 42, and my sister had everything except one ovary removed at 32!! Lucky me, huh?

I just wanted to share a little of what is going on with me, just in case someone else is there too. I recently had my annual at the doc and asked her to check my FSH levels and lo and behold, they are still normal!! WTHay is up with that?!?!?!? I guess that even though its been this long, my ovaries are still waiting for that opportune moment to surprise me. But alas, I wont be caught short. I am still packing in my purse everyday :) Another thing that I have experienced is, a few occasions where I felt like I was going to start, had a little (sorry to be gross) brownish discharge like I normally do at the end. I guess its the end of the old stuff. It is never more than a few spots. Not enough to even worry about, doesn't even soil my clothing, just appears when I wipe. It has happened a few times and I told hubby..Oh well, looks like Flo is coming. he laughs now and says..oh ya...how long this time. I so hate when he is right and it amounts to nothing. Not that I mind, I just hate him being right Pffffttt

As for what stage I am in. Who knows. I like the rest of you are ready to be done. 40 years of this is enough. I think that there should be an on and off switch so that once we are done with the child bearing years that we could just shut down!! Maybe in the future with the flying cars and such, we can get a chip implanted to do just that!!

I will be counting the days until I hit the year, but from what I think I know..I wont be surprised if I have to start the count down all over again. If so, then at least I have had 9 months of freedom without being pregnant again!! YIPPEE!!! I guess I should knock on wood about now ;)

We need to name ourselves. What do you think we should call our selves ??

I had a d&c last July 2.. Thought all was clear felt great after.. Dr gave me progesterone pills to take for 10 days.. Kinda afraid to take them.. Anyone else ever had them? I also hope this time it's not as bad as last year.. The d&c came back all good .. So hoping its just a short regular period..bad cramps also!

Hello ladies - I have been almost 9 months without a period and yesterday I had some very scant spotting, enough to barely see - is this considered a "period"? Would I start counting again? I have had some dull pain almost like ovulating. I was having hot flashes and night sweats pretty regularly but not lately - however still having insomnia. My symptoms have been pretty manageable just not sure about this tinge of blood I am seeing :-(

Thought I was about to reach the menopause milestone, had hot flushes the works. Then those seated down. Then 9 and half months after no period got a light one which finished two weeks ago. Yesterday another one started. Heavy and really really painful. So fed up with it at 54 years old was looking forward to reaching that stage of life.

My hot flashes (which have been awful) also have stopped in the past few weeks! I thought maybe this was the end of the road but after reading all of this it may only be the beginning. Lol I will not take HRT and take all natural supplements and it seems to help with the awful anxiety I went through finding out at 37 my clock was ticking. Luckily for me my 13 yr old always has the goods but I'm really hoping at this point I won't have to use them again

September 24, 2015 was my last period thanks to me posting it here. Nothing happened until 2 weeks ago when I thought I was gaining weight. Befuddled at my fingers also getting like sausages that my wedding band wasn't fitting...well to my surprise my period reared its hydra head! Now I am back to normal athough the period took about 12 days to fully end - 2 days of medium flow, 6 days of heavy, - 4 days of light flow! A ll is well my body. I lost all the water weight, my hands are back to normal, and I still do not eat wheat feel great. No night sweats, no body aches and no tiredness. I'm trying to do things as naturally as I can right now. Tempting to get a hysterectomy at 58. My doctor did an unexpected endometrial biopsy a few months ago which caused me to bleed for 2 wks. Went to the ER because I felt so sick. The ultra sound still shows some thickening of my lining. But NO more biopsies. I am sick of bleeding and hoping I can make it to the end soon. Hoping 59 is my magic age. It has been wonderful not having a period and no PMS! Wish I could have stopped my periods years ago. Good luck to everyone. This is a great site to find out that we are normal and not alone.

Vernetta it's refreshing to hear I'm not the only younger one dealing with all this. I finally started my period last week after the 4 month break. Other than feeling a little more crampy the whole time it was normal. In fact it was lighter than I'm used to so that was a blessing. The week or so leading up to it on the other hand was a nightmare lol. The only thing that scares me is another possible 10 years of this. Yikes!!!

Hoping you don't get any more periods Colleen. Not everyone does. But it has been good to know that bleeding after a year of no periods does not mean we have cancer. This can be normal too. Having the blood test will be good. Of course, it is always good to seek advice if you do bleed after a year.

9 mths and whammo! I'll be 52 in January. I had horrible migraines for 2 nights and then one spot of blood the third day with some craziness and then a full period started last night. I started out crying in the shower as a fistful of hair came out (low iodine levels and my Pregnenolone, DHEA, estrogen and progesterone are all zero). I pretty much was a cry baby all day. And I never had PMS issues all these years. Go figure. So bummed I gotta start counting again.

My gyn NP told me years ago to count 18 mths for unprotected sex when the time came because she'd had clients who became pregnant just counting 12 months.

I'm 56' 57 in just 2 months, and I haven't had a period for 9 months....until today!! I knew something was up as the last 10 days I've been experiencing PMS symptoms I'm very familiar with. I thought I was finally rid of this thing! 3 years ago I had a period that lasted 6 weeks very heavy and I became very sick. I was given a hormone for 10 days to stop the bleed and put me back on a regular schedule, and regular I stayed until Jan 1, 2016. I have been so happy, even with the extreme hot flashes...I didn't care because I was free to plan and do things without worrying about my period. I just want to cry.... I'm so glad I found this site!! Reading your stories has helped me so much. I was extremely anxious until I read that I'm not alone and the struggle is real! Keep up the good fight ladies! So glad I found this Web site. This will be my third count down. Rrr. I just turned 50 in July and my last per was in Sept 2015. This is the second time, only this one was crampy including all the regular stuff like cravings headaches etc. And feeling sick like I usteto back in the regular days. My per useto last 4 days tops but this one is on day 10 and heavy. Ugh. The other I noticed is my hormones are going nuts. I feel like someone replaced my sex drive with a 16 year old male lol not complaining but wondering if anyone else ever felt this way when aunt flow paid a suprise visit. ? I don't have hot flashes thank God at least not yet. Wondering when I can expect those. Thought I'd try and bypass those if anyone has a secret they want to share. Lol

Hey Diane. Yes, my sex drive was in over drive in my early 50's.. Kinda mother natures cruel joke on me as my husband was killed when I was 41. Thank God for "BOB"! I just started getting hot flashes really bad this month and I haven't had a period In almost a year.. I still have a couple of days left to officially be a year. Fingers crossed.

@dianeomeara9 You might be lucky then and not have hot flashes. I'm 39 and have had them for a year. The longest I've gone without a period is 4 months and then bam!! I then got it again 20 days later. I'm not complaining because it has settled down the hot flashes and night sweats I was getting all summer long. They were terrible especially with the heat in South Carolina. I thought I was permanently living in my own inferno. My poor family was freezing in the house yet I would be sweating uncontrollably. Haha. I'm an early menopause gal so it's been a ride so far. My hormones were nuts but since the two periods I feel normal a tad. It's always fun with a teenagers and toddler running around. My first symptom was missed periods and the flashes. My guess is you are ok on that. Of course this is opinion and not a medical diagnosis. Lol

I'm 53 and went almost 8 months without a period, then right around the 8th month mark I started to get the familiar symptoms that I got before my period would start, for example, very tender breasts, bloating, hot flashes amd a very short fuse, just to name a few. Then within 5 days of those symptoms I started spotting, nothing really heavy at all, in fact it was manageable with just a panty liner. But I still contacted my Dr. and she says it happens more than you'd think. And that I probably wouldn't even get my cycle the next month, and of course, I definitely did and it was back with a vengeance! Heavy bleeding, horrible cramps, nausea, diarrhea, insomnia.

What the heck, mother nature is not playing fair with me!! I just wanna be done, for once and for all...

But I am comforted to know I'm not alone♡

Im so HAPPY to find this forum. I thought i was all alone, doing menopause naturally and now all your experiences settles my anxiety and sound so familiar, I feel like I've found my Tribe ❤. My period stopped late October 2015. I turned 53 this August. Then during the beginning of September I noticed my boobs looked fuller. They weren't painful, but definitely fuller. I got so excited thinking menopause was just a few weeks away and it gifted me with lovely, full boobs. Well, Ma Nature had other plans... a week later I got so sick. Low grade fever, nausea so bad I couldn't eat or drink ANYTHING for 2 whole days and diarrhea so bad that water went right through me. Then on the 3rd day I noticed blood. I thought I was pooping blood after not eating or drinking anything for 2 whole days. I rushed to the doctor and he sent me for tests. I had to go home and rest from the doctors appointment (not even kidding) and that's when I realized I wasn't sick - I had started my period. Exactly 11.5 months from when it first started! I had never had PMS prior, but now it's almost debilitating. Wicked migraines, horrific diarrhea, nausea for a week prior... I wanted to go through menopause naturally - but I don't know if I can put up with another 11 months of this... I have found CBD works beautifully however. It gets rid of my migraines, it stops the cramping and even settles the nausea so I can at least snack - but I can only use it in the evenings because of the complete relaxation and couch lock it kicks in. Now if only I could spend the next 11 months on the couch in Netflix mode, snacking away - that would be a beautiful way to welcome Menopause...

@Roberta stay strong on the natural way. Have you tried evening primrose oil? I take 2000 mg a day and it has helped a lot. I also take vitamins C, D,E, calcium and folic acid. I call it my morning cocktail. Haha. I do split up the primrose oil. 1000 in the morning and 1000 at night. The longest I have gone without a period so far has been 4 months and then 2 periods only 20 days apart. I had horrible breast pain and swore I had breast cancer but the primrose oil took it completely away and even now before the period they are not as bad.

I am 52 and have been irregular since summer of 2012. I've missed a few months at a time here and there through to December of 2015 and since then it's been 10 months without. TMI, but since last October, I have not had any interest in sex. Poor hubby! However, in the past couple of weeks, I've been like a nympho. Then today, I am getting a period after 10 full months without. I googled whether sex stimulates ovulation and read that "the protein in the sexual fluid acts as a hormonal signal on the female brain" and it triggers ovulation. I love hubby but I love having no periods more, so I think for Christmas this year, my husband will be getting a blowup doll from Santa. I already joked with him and told him "same time next year?" I'll start my count again I guess. I'm sure that the timing is just a coincidence.

Again, I thought I was done with the spotting/mild bleeding, but no... and this time I had severe, migraines and lower back aches that literally put me in bed for 7 days. Will try primrose oil for breast pain (see niravongnails comment) because I thought I had cancer since there was a large, painful lump in my right breast. Today I woke up pain free, lump free, but drained. I tried doing some physical work, but my body just still is not back to normal...got a tightening in my neck and slight twinge in lower back...now am lying back down to rest off the "warning" pain and bleeding dark blood that just came after 4 days of brown spotting and 1 day of red, thin blood.

What I want to know, is who came up with the "12 month rule" in being post menopause? Usually studies are an "average" statistic and with that being said, everyone is different. Not one of us is the same. I really wish they wouldn't use such a scare tactic just because someone has spotting or bleeding after the 12 month mark. That puts everyone in a panic.I'm not saying there isn't a problem, because sometimes there can be, but medical practice is not a science, it's practicing medicine and this "12 month thing" just tells me they really can't pinpoint anything because we are all so different and with that said, I really wish they would use different verbage when they speak about post menopause but they won't because that's how they can justify a procedure and get paid. How sad. Just know you are you and you will go at your own pace in this next chapter of Life. I still get health anxiety and its caused by the health care system. The Merck Manuel that they go by does not have all the correct answers and a lot of Doctors won't go beyond that Manuel.

I was telling hubby about some of the peri problems that have physical effects and he asked me how do women live longer than men if they don't use medicine (HRT, pain pills etc...) to get through all of this? I am trying to go through this medicine free...but it's hard so I didn't have an answer for him. Is it common practice to just remove ovaries after being post menopause? I mean do women still have ovaries after being long time post menopause? Just curious on that.

SO happy to have found this thread. Went almost 8 months with no period and like all of you, thought I was just a few months away from officially celebrating "no more periods!" Then, I guess I started spotting. I'm 54 and still don't know exactly what spotting means..... light period? What happened with me was that I went to the bathroom and when I wiped after urinating, the toilet paper was "pink." This happened for a day or so. I wore a pad but nothing really on the pad, just pink when I wiped. I didn't think much about it. I had had my pap about a month or so before that and the GYN noticed a small skin tag on my cervix. She said it looked okay but she still took a biopsy of it, just to be sure. My pap was normal and when I went back to get results of biopsy, which was also normal, I happened to mention to her that I had spotted a bit. She seemed concerned and scheduled me for a uterine biopsy the following month. I was concerned about the biopsy because I had had one about 11 years earlier and actually had a seizure on the table, which after lots and lots of tests, was determined to be caused from pain. As a side note the dr. fo the first biopsy had given me NO meds to take beforehand so she just used some kind of tool to pry open my cervix to get to my uterus, hence the intense pain I felt! Anyway, back to my last biopsy - I shared my concern with my current GYN and was given meds to insert the night before the biopsy to help soften my cervix. This biopsy was also very painful but I did NOT have a seizure this time. This biopsy was also normal. I told her that I was going to be leaving the country in a month for a 6

oops, hit send too early.... anyway was going to be leaving country for 6 months so she sent me for an intravaginal ultrasound to make sure the fibroids that were noticed a few months earlier had not grown. No change.... so everything was good to go. NOW, just 3 days before we leave the country for 6 months, I get a PERIOD! It had been 8 months since a normal period. I was worried at first because I wondered if I should go back to the doctor to have more tests and put off our travel plans but I've decided that this must be normal. I don't really know what else the GYN could do at this point since I had a biopsy just last month and it was normal. I guess I'm normal too and my body just isn't ready to be finished with all this Period crap! Thank you all so much for sharing your stories.

Hi & sigh.....I have been trying not to freak out but that 's hard not do after googling too much about this topic! Like others glad I found this thread to keep my sanity until my TVUS in approx. 1.5 weeks. Unfortunately my mind goes straight to cancer &. I wish it wouldn't but it's kind of the way I'm "built" ....sigh. I turned 53 this past June & my last period was Aug2015. Prior to that it was a few months "on" & a few months "off" which I figured was fairly normal. In Mar 2016 had very light brownish spotting on TP. & didn't think much of it but wasn't sure if I needed to "reset" the 12 month clock again. Fast forward to Nov. 2016 & approx. 2-3 weeks ago noticed a clear discharge like past ovulation s & again didn't think much of it other than I would mention it at my next gym appt. I en felt sore nipple , achy breasts. & a little pelvic discomfort , basically like PMS & past periods. Well on Sun.morning went to the toilet & couldn't believe the blood in the TP! (Hence my mind which began to freak out since this is not "supposed " to happen at the 15 month mark ! The rest of the day on Sun. It was just scant brownish blood on tampon & was over by the evening. I was lucky to get a gym appt. on Mon . & nothing visually or after pelvic revealed anything but. Now have to wait until 12/20 for TVUS & poss. Biopsy depending on thickness of lining. Just now trying not to freak out until then. I have had no typical meno symptoms such as hot flashes etc. & thought I dodged all that but now this so again trying not to make myself crazy! I have been under quite a bit of emotional stress lately & was wondering if that is a contributing factor in this "awesome" surprise?!?

I'll be 53 at the end of January, haven't had my period since November 10th, but hot flashes like crazy, anxiety attack for several hours today (I used to only get them occasionally, for 15-20 min). Did skip one period last January, then somewhat irregular since then. So is it menopause? Or peri menopause?

OMG, the same thing happened to me last night—ugh! It's all my fault I suppose, I was just thinking the other day how nice it was not to worry about whether or not I had enough tampons in inventory. I was so exited that 10 months had passed. So now the clock is reset?? Boy oh boy we need a t-shirt that says "Perimenopause Sucks"! ;)

I too am glad to have found this page full of similar stories. I am 49yrs old and have been dealing with hot&cold flashes all of last summer up until September. Haven't had period since June 2016 so after not experiencing hots/colds and no period I assumed I was one of the "lucky" ones until this morning when I went to wipe myself after using the bathroom just to notice blood all over it. :( So after reading the above comments I guess it's safe to say..It's not over yet! Hi All I got to month 9 and wham I got a period from hell. Every symptom plus I was bleeding so heavy. Couldn't stand up without whoosh!...

I've just come on again now a month later so don't quite know whats going on. Am I back to having a period every month or is it just a blip. Hate being on this rollercoaster of emotion and not knowing where you are with it.

Anyone who has come on again after a long time of not doing so how many periods did you have before it stopped again.

Cant wait to be free from it!

I should have known better, last week I was very emotional. I am 50 now and haven't had a cycle in over a year. Yesterday was the worst I've had in decades. Pain, weak, lot's of blood and the smell! This morning I am tired, but seems to be slowing down somewhat. I am thankful that I have a place to be real. I haven't been to the doctors office in about 24 years. When I was trying to have a child it was just frustrating. After the last visit were the doctor told me I needed marriage counseling more than a doctor was my last visit. We never had any children and I have learned to live with that. I was very happy when the cycles seemed to stop. The last two months or so sex has been painful, I never thought I would say this, but I was losing interest in it. Lower back pain, cramps and headaches all back yesterday. What I found interesting in reading these posts is that some women experience sciatica, that has been happening to me for the last few months. I just thought it was because I stand all day. Well after reading all this I'm finding out that it all seems pretty normal. Thanks for sharing ladies, sometimes it seems you can't just talk outloud about this, nice to have this place to vent. It's hard when very few of your friends have no clue because they are still normal and I'm over here having a hot flash on an evening with the girls. I have also started with terrible back pain when It's coming and also large clotting. Doc told me that was normal and par for the course. Hope this helps.

I am 54 years young had no cycle January 2016..had my papsmear May 2016..my cycle "appeared" July 2016 and after "disappearing" for 7 months..I had stopped paying attention to the "cycle is about to start symptoms" until i went to the bathroom and when i wiped on February 25, 2017 "SURPRISE" it's baaaaaaaaaack with a vengeance. I'm a stay at home mom raising a 9 year old son (yup he slipped in..my last hoorah before menopause) so I thought...cramps make me feel like everything just wanna fall from between my legs...I'm had to go buy pads..dark ugly underwear (laugh out loud) and go back to sitting on thick towels just in case of a "oops missed the pad". Yep sick of this time in life. Will be 52 in April and my period seems like it will never stop. I have had 2 periods in the last year, that I thought was going to kill me. The first one was December a year ago and I ended up needing a blood transfusion for anemia. It was so heavy and full of clots. It then went back to normal for about 6 months and then wham, the same thing in June last year. I doubled up on iron and did okay through that one. Now my periods are light but go on for just about 3 weeks. Heart palpitations, racing heart, no hot flashes or night sweats. I am just ready to be done with this. Ugh!! My younger sister, who is 50 will be done next month as long as it doesn't show up before then. She suffered with all this crazy period stuff in her 30s and 40s. My mother had hysterectomy at 38 so her history doesn't help a lot and my grandmothers said theirs just ended in early 40s with no issues. Good luck to all and no, we aren't going crazy ;)

I'm 52 years old but this mess started when I was 31. I started having horrible heavy long periods. Some as long as 45 days. The Drs have sent me for every kind of test they could think of that could be causing this and they found nothing wrong. They say I was just starting early menopause symptoms. I had the hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, weight gain. If it was menopause related I got it. So I just grinned and bared it. 8 miserable years later I got pregnant even though I was told it wasn't possible. After giving birth to a beautiful 10 pound 1 ounce baby girl the horrible periods started again. My Dr reassured me that I would go through menopause soon. Flash forward 11 years later and finally in November of 2016 I STOPPED MY PERIOD! It was awesome. I felt great except for a hot flash here and there. But Bam! Yesterday I started again. The pain, bloating, moodiness. My husband was not thrilled either. Poor man. He remembers the hell I went through all those years and if momma ain't happy nobody is happy. I am hoping this is short lived because quite frankly I dont know if I can do this again with out the help of a nerve pill. Ahhh. For some reason I feel better just letting it all out like this and knowing that I am not alone in this.

Hey everyone. This is one roller coaster I truly want to get off of. I noticed several of you say you have palps and heart racing; when I experienced that it was in January and I had an EKG done but all came back fine. I haven't experienced any palps or racing since my period started 10 days ago. The flow has been light some days; heavy other days. When I sit for an extended length of time then stand up...whoosh..so I double pad now. I've also doubled my doses of iron and orange juice because I'm suffer from anemia also. I have no history to go by because my mom had a total hysterectomy at age 38 right after I was born. So like the rest of you ladies I wait to see what's going to happen next. My husband jokes and says that just proves I'm still fertile but according to pelvic/vaginal ultrasounds I have fibroids and cysts on each ovary. So I guess I'll sit back with a bottled water and swallow this Motrin. We all together on this peri-post-whatever it's called menopause ride.

Then I had CRAMPS! I awoke the next morning and BAM! a PERIOD! Omg, I am so frustrated! I will be 48 in June, but oddly enough, this roller coaster ride started after my younger son was born in june 2012, as i was turning 43. After he was born, my period was never right again, months would go by with nothing. At first, just thought it was breast feeding or hormones, but eventually a dr said he thought it was perimenopause. Seemed strange to go from labor and delivery straight to menopause, but ok... in the past year, i've had hot flashes, trouble sleeping, all the usual symptoms, and no period for 9 months. Haven't had hot flashes in a few months, though...Out of nowhere, appear to be lightly bleeding today. Ugh... Don't even know what to think. :(

Turned 50 in Dec 2016, had a period in Oct 2016 for three day....Now it's March 2017. Woke up to the messiest morning ever last week. Bam, "Rosie" was back. No warning of spotting, no cramps, no bloating (actually losing weight), no breast pains, no bitchiness.......And now FIVE days later, still heavy bleeding. I'll compare it to the sensation of after childbirth.(ive had three, youngest is 23 yrs old) Daily cramps and the munchies. Chocolate and Netflixing when I can. All of us gals are different, so patience until we now for sure when ROSIE won't be visiting us anymore. Until then, pads are still on the shopping list when going to Walmart

Last April I had my period for a week then a week off. Then it came again for 2 weeks. After that I didn't have one for 10 months. I get very short ones now that last for one or two days. My Gyn told me it's not normal. She wants me to have an ultrasound and a biopsy next week. I had a biopsy last year and it showed hyperplasia. I had an ultrasound a couple months ago and everything looked good. Should I be concerned?

Since I last commented on this post, I've had sporadic periods, but I've had a heavy period now for 2 1/2 weeks. I just made a doctor appointment. Alice, what did your doctor suggest you do after the biopsy and the ultrasound?

I had missed 8 months and thought I was nearly done . Then for the last two months my periods are back . I went for a smear last week and the practice nurse told me if you start the menopause before your 50th birthday you have to be clear for 2 YEARS. Omg

Hi ladies, what a relief this forum is!

Turned 54 last December, last period was Aug '16 after two and a half years of irregular cycles. Hot flushes had come and gone twice, each time for a couple of months at a time, but they weren't too bad I guess - I was expecting it to get worse before it got better but that didn't really happen. I had started taking a herbal tablet called Harmony at the first signs of diminishing cycles thinking it would help lessen any oncoming symptoms.

Once the flushes, along with the crawling skin sensation, got to be a little troublesome at night I changed to a product called Remifemin on my sis in laws recommendation. Flushes ceased (thank goodness) but I'd noticed the odd lightest pink flush of colour in the loo paper once or twice - barely noticeable so didn't pay much attention.

Last weekend I had terrible lower back pain which I put down to the two falls I'd had the previous week. This morning I went to the loo and to my astonishment there it was!!! No real tell tale symptoms prior except a bit of a heavy feeling in my groin which, along with the backache, now makes sense.

I've put on a lot of weight over the last 15 months due to an insatiable sweet tooth but there's also been 3 deaths in the family during that time which has not helped.

I will keep taking the Remifemin as I feel that's helped to keep symptoms at bay but I'd truly thought that this was it and I was definitely not expecting another full on period! So now I believe the clock has been reset and it's a 'here we go again' situation. I'm hell bent and determined not to be like my mother was during menopause. She was so moody, angry, unapproachable, teary and just all together horrible during her time, which was at the age of 54......

Thanks for letting me share my story. I been loathe to mention anything much to my husband and daughters, I don't want them thinking that menopause is the cause if I get pee'd off at someone for not tidying up their mess or not pulling their weight around the house. I generally put up with it without batting an eyelid and just do things myself without creating a fuss but sometimes enough is enough and I'll be damned if I'll let them blame menopause for my exasperation when they're being lazy and inconsiderate....... Good luck everyone, I guess we're all in this together

I'm baffled. I turn 57 in August and didn't have a cycle for ten months, as I see some people here also experienced. Then yesterday, there it was! Talk about an unpleasant surprise! Very light and no difficulties, but at nearly 57 I have still experienced not a single other symptom of menopause - no hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, etc. For which I am grateful, but getting yet another cycle was a bit of a shock! I mean, I'm nearly 57!

I'm 49 and have the same thing going on. No cramps or anything, just the bleeding. It had been a little over a year since my last period and I was glad to be rid of it. I just hope it doesn't last too long!

You're kind of young to go through menopause at 32. That being said, make an appointment with your doctor asap! It could be something serious.

I had a coil fitted for 12 years and had no periods. On the removal of the coil I went straight onto the mini pill which I took for 12 months, again no periods as you take it every day without a break. Had two blood tests 6 weeks apart and they confirmed that I had gone through the menopause. That was ten months ago. Last week I had breast pain and mood swings. Then Weds night I started bleeding. I went to the Doctors on Thurs and they have referred me for an emergency gyni appointment. Five days in and the bleeding is subsiding. All in all it has followed the pattern for a normal period. There are 16 reasons why a post menopausal women can start bleeding so I am trying not to write the devil on the wall.

Hi ladies I feel your pain. I am 53 and have not had a period in seven months - pure bliss, but when I woke up this morning guess who had come to town?!? So far it hasn't been heavy so maybe in another day or so it will be gone. I too have been sweating a great deal more and getting irritated more quickly than usual for the last 5 months or so. Last week my breasts got full, heavy and sore, the all too familiar clear discharge was on the TP when i wiped so I should've known. Feeling tired & my lower back feels like it wants to snap in half. Looks like I got to start the clock again - UGH, I hope this is the last hurrah because I'm going on a cruise in July & don't want to be saddled with this hassle!

Surprised how many women want their cycle to end when it's supposed to be healthy for it to continue longer. Not to mention the issue of hot flashes that often accompany the end of your cycles. I am 54 and after 2 years of challenge dealing with hot flashes they suddenly stopped and my period came back. I was glad! To me the hot flashes were worse than a few days of a period. I do use natural progesterone cream and wonder if getting back on a regular routine with that and taking several supplements as well as Black Cohosh over the past 2 years has been part of the hormonal balance shift for me. I've read that if you are low on progesterone the "bad" form of estrogen can get high and cause lots of the unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes. The "good" estrogen is I believe what gets so low in most women.

Hi everyone ... So glad I found this group ... YUP just like all of you I went 7 months without THE RED VIPER and out of nowhere " HI HERE I AM DID YOU MISS ME ? " ... NO I DID NOT !!! it's something how quickly I forgot all the warning signs of the red viper, the painful breasts, the uncontrollable need to eat everything in the house, and the headache that knocks me on my butt for a day ... I was really enjoying not having it and not having symptoms of PMDD, which also ment not having to take medication for it ... The freedom from both for 7 months was wondersous ... I can say that I didn't have any symptoms of PMDD this time, which I think is why getting the red viper yesterday was such a SURPRISE ... So hear we go again ...

I went 6 months without a period and thought "This is it!" I was having hot flashes and night sweats daily for the first few months and then they subsided. Over the past couple of years, I would miss periods, but the longest I had ever gone was 79 days. I really thought this time was the real thing. My last period started on Jan. 22nd and two days later, my Dad passed away. I have had a lot of stress since January of this year...starting with the loss of my Dad and then a close friend less than two weeks later, and then 7 more losses between friends, family, and acquaintances...all within the past 6 months. About 2-3 weeks ago, I started having a lot of breast discomfort and figured it was just tied in with the hormonal changes my body was going through with the loss of my periods. Well, last Thursday I found out differently when I was shocked to discover I was starting another period!!! I'm on day 7 now and it's crazy. I'm constantly alternating between light to heavy bleeding and having nagging cramps. Part of me wonders if the stress of the past 6 months just paused my periods or if I'm truly in perimenopause? I'm going to be 56 in less than 3 months and I'm ready for these periods to be over with.

So glad I found this group! I'm 55 and haven't had a period in 9 months. I have had a large Fibroid for the past 6 years with no symptoms and I've had 3 different opinions which all recommended to leave it alone since it'll shrink with menopause. Then after 9 months I started spotting 2 weeks ago with cramps and spotting turn to period today. I saw my doctor last week they did an ultrasound and when I told her about spotting she said we can do a biopsy to make sure or come back for another ultrasound in 6 months. I'm leaving for vacation in few days and didn't want to do the biopsy just incase if there was any complications. I've been so worried thinking what if this is not a period and it's cancer instead. Is there anyone out there with the same experience as me.

Hi tarlon

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I just turned 55 and last year I had gone about 7 months without a period and then BAM, about 3 weeks before leaving the country for 6 months I started bleeding again. I too have had uterine fibroids and cysts on my ovaries, off and on for about 8 years. When I started bleeding again, even though it was light, my GYNO was very concerned and said that I needed to have a uterine biopsy, just to rule out cancer. I had the biopsy and it came back benign. About a week after having the biopsy I spotted again but didn't contact my Dr since I had just had a biopsy and a pap about 2 months before that. It has now been 8 months and no period so...... I'm crossing my fingers again that I'm finally done with it all. :D I would suggest that you DO get a biopsy, just to ease your mind and make sure that everything is ok. The biopsy can be pretty painful but have your doctor give you something to open your cervix so that it isn't so painful. I have had 2 and the first one I was given NO pre-meds and I actually had a pain-induced seizure on the table during the procedure. PRETTY SCARY! The second time (10 years later) I made my doctor aware and she prescribed a medication that opened my cervix up and while there was some pressure and pain, it wasn't all that bad. The next day I felt pretty normal.

Thank you so much for your respond, Lynn! It was very helpful. I'm only gonna be gone for 2 weeks. If I still have my period I will do the biopsy. I'm so not looking forward to that. Thanks again

Hello! I just turned 49 in July. I have been going through the peri menopause stage for 5 years! Well I had not had a period for 4 months until this past Sunday! I had no other symptoms except for bloating. I thought I was done :( and the cramping is way worse than what my normal periods were in the past. Could that be because its been 4 months? This is horrible, the heavy bleeding is annoying also.. I am so glad I found this forum! Thanks for all the info ladies!

I'm 42 and started perimenopause 5 years ago. It's been 8 months since my last period. For the last 2 years I've had a period every 4 months. I'm actually upset I have started so young but obviously accepting it because I have no choice. The hardest part for me is that I married and would have loved to have another child, so accepting I can't has been hard. I feel it would have been easier to deal with mentally if I began menopausal symptoms in my late 40s early 50s. I have been advised to take HRT but slightly daunted to do so. I have put on 20lbs and I'm finding it really hard. I would do anything to have my period again. I know I need to really focus on my doet and exercise. I'm also vegan so I need to be even more careful with what I eat. Does anyone have any suggestions for natural products I can take or specific exercises I should do? I have read strength and conditioning is good. Weight lifting and yoga???

OMG .... Just discovered this thread after googling and I've read all the comments since the start! I can only say thank you to you all. I've had a nightmare 4 years of periods every 3-4 weeks, heavy most of the time, developed lots of allergies and asthma, had incredible itchiness in the pant area and have insomnia most nights! Knew it was 'perimenipausal' symptoms as was told by the doctor......was period free for 3 months in 2016, then 7 months this year and just started the period from hell yesterday! Haha it's amazing how quickly you forget the symtoms! Last night went to bed and woke up to murderous blood scene in bed this morning! My hubby was giving it OMG's, nightmare as I changed all the bed linen yesterday! Anyhow, what I've learned from this wonderful site is that it's pretty normal. I was counting down the months to that glorious 12 month honour, but alas I'm gonna have to just settle for counting a wee bit longer. I'm 49, 50 next month.

thank you ladies, us Scottish ladies feel your frustration. ❤️❤️❤️

The same thing literally just happened to me. Went 7 months, no period and then yesterday it was back! I was so upset. I thought for sure the madness was almost over! I'll be 40 next week and have been dealing with all this since I was about 36 and told by doc at 37 I was starting premature menopause. I freaked but once I came to terms with it and then had these glorious 7 months with no period I was excited for no periods. I hate starting this clock over again. Good thing is, it's a heavy period but nothing out of the norm from my normal except for the cramps. They are horrible and I just feel icky! Ugh!! Being a woman definitely is not always fun!!

56.8 years old. September doc wanted me to be checked for uterine issues because I still had periods. OB/Gyn suggested it might be polyp(s) not a period. That was fun. Seems in California they screening, without batting an eye, for cancer and polyps to be super cautious. Doc, however, did support my belief that i was having periods. Dec 2016 was my last period. Clock is ticking. Maybe mood swings. Sleep is better with Melatonin, Calm - magnesium and ok... a nightcap of brandy. Hot flashes and night sweats not bad. Suddenly started clenching/grinding in March. Insane. I'm connecting dots with hormones. Anyone else? Anyway, 8/12 found a surprise. One wipe. But that was that. So far. I'll be 57- if this holds - thru my 12th month in Dec. Nice bday gift. Frustrated but grateful all is well. Happy to read all of you have been in the same pot except I'm nearly the oldest!

Well this is a great find. This group that is. Hadn't had a menses since December. Then August 3rd I started. Thought it stopped and it's starting up again. Bizarre! No hot flashes for awhile. Those are for the winter months. I describe them as an injection of cayenne pepper lotion.
