How bad side effects(ESTRATEST)

My wife is on estratest after hysterectomy.I wander how bad are the side effects from this medication.Thank you.

Hi Buc1980........I'm not familiar with estratest, but I have to warn you that some women have major problems right after a hysterectomy (even months). So don't assume, if she's feeling badly, that it's side-effects from the HRT. I had a friend who was actually bed-ridden for about 3 months after a hysterectomym from all new symptoms. She felt like she was going to die.....She blamed alot of her strange feelings and sensations on her new estrogen patch, and refused to wear it. In retrospect, it probably would have helped her feel better, and all the really bad things she was experiencing, was the major change she was going through, due to the hysterectomy. I hope I haven't assumed too much here. Good luck to your wife! Suddenly having your own natural hormones removed, can be a rought road!

I have been using Estratest HS just one day a week (using estradiol the other days)and have no problems with that schedule. When I used it twice a week (estradiol the other days) I would get dark hair on the inside of my thighs, but didn't have any trouble with facial hair or deepening voice or any of the things that are sometimes associated with too much testosterone. I have heard that some women take Estratest every day with no adverse effects, so it seems to be an individual thing, much like most HRT options.

Thanks. I had considered a motion-activated sprinkler last year, but you can't use them in the Fall or early Spring because of the chance of frost. For example, the Scarecrow maker's web site at http://www.contech-inc.com/products/scarecrow/ says: "To prevent damage from freezing water, take the ScareCrow inside and remove the battery before the first winter frost. Failure to do so may cause some parts to break as ice expands inside." We had our first frost to speak of this morning (Oct 8) at about 3 AM. My other concern with the Scarecrow is its web site says that large animals can be detected at 30 feet away but "some small animals" may not be seen at even 20 feet away. Unfortunately, Contech, the maker, doesn't say which small animals are too small to be seen at even the closer range, but rabbits are probably in that category. Hares and rabbits are smaller than deer, cats, and racoons, which are the animals some YouTube videos showed being repelled by the Scarecrow. I didn't see one video showing the Scarecrow scaring off rabbits. The web site has a chart showing that small animals need to get within 10 feet, which means for me buying 3 or 4 Scarecrows to protect my patch of bluegrass. So that would be $300 or $400 for something that can't be used after October 8 or during the early Spring, both times of frost around here. Also my neighbor's dogs on the other side of our shared fence might take offense if they get hit by water all the time. But it was interesting reading about the Scarecrow. Thanks. It seems to be better than the motion-activated sprinkler I read about last year.

That's the opposite of what your "thinking brain" is doing to you now. Now, you're thinking about it and worried about it, and anticipating a let-down, not an incredible loving experience. Your brain is getting in the way of your body, and your body is still inexperienced and learning. Talking to your doctor about switching methods of birth control is a good step, but above that, don't think about "the problem" so much. Thinking about it will magnify it, not solve it. Next time you and your husband have the right opportunity, try putting on some romantic music, light a few candles, then turn your brain off. Talk with your husband about pleasant, lightweight things until any worries in the back of your head are gone. While you're talking, enjoy looking at your husband, and appreciate all of the attractive qualities he has that make you tingle. You want to re-build the emotional intimacy before even starting on the physical intimacy. Once you're both relaxed, concentrate on your feelings -- the texture of his skin, the sensations on yours. Take what's feeling good to you and really experience that. Feel, rather than think about, the experience, and let your body, not your brain, guide you. It may also help to tune some of your senses out (listening to the music, visualizing colors or textures) and some of your senses in (his touch, smell of his skin). But above all, don't involve the thinking, rational part of your brain past the part where you decide "yes".

I suspect Metacam side effects--other option(s)?

We almost lost our 15 month old Cockapoo and we fear it was due to this drug 'Metacam'. We brought our dog to the vet with a slightly sore paw, nothing we were overly concerned about as he was putting weight on the foot and in good spirits. Reluctantly we agreed to our dog being given an antibiotic and an injection of Metacam (we felt this was a bit unnecessary but we trusted the vets opinion and that we were doing the best for our dog). That same day the dog was groggy and lethargic. By that same night our dog was groaning with pain so we gave him half a painkiller prescribed by the vet. The next morning our poor dog couldn't move, he lay unresponsive and couldn't lift his body weight upright. He wasn't eating or drinking a thing! If we touched any part of his body he was in severe pain. Our dog is very energetic with a great appetite and we were very worried! We returned to the vet and found our dog was running a very high temperature. The vet was adamant that this was as a result of his sore paw and possible bone infection and was very critical of the dog breed. Our dog was kept in over night and medicated with paracetamol and an IV antibiotic. Within 24hours our dog was returning to normal. The vet insisted we do an x-ray and nothing showed up. Thankfully we were able to discharge our pet after two nights but found the vet very reluctant to talk about what and how much medication he had prescribed our dog. We have no way to ever know for sure the reason our dog fell unresponsive within a couple of hours but we can't shake the feeling that it has a strong connection with the Metacam he was administered on first meeting the vet. We have also noticed our dog's weight is not correct on his medication label - it is double his weight! Finally, when leaving the vet practice with the prescribed medications, the vet had to call us back as he has prescribed double painkiller doses. The vet carried out a blood test without our knowledge and still has not disclosed the result of this blood test. When asked to discuss our concerns the vet became extremely defensive and condescending towards us. We would love to put our minds at ease and find out if any other dog owners experienced this reaction to Metacam or if it sounds like a over dosage of Metacam?

Thanks Ravencajun for the encouragement! I have read all there is on the web about this drug. I knew how serious it is and the dangers associated with taking it. I have been getting blood work every 2 weeks for 6 months and just yesterday was told I could go to every 2 months! YEA! I already take lots of vitamins, the B's and D3 every day. I also take 1000mg of Folic Acid the day I take the 5 pills and then 800mg a day. My Dermo has it all covered...LOL I have always suffered from headaches so I figured that was a weakness of mine and it was just targeted. I take a low dose and for that I am thankful. On a good note it has helped my psoriatic arthritis a lot! And the arthritis in my neck that was awful...it is manageable now! It is an affordable drug, a lot cheaper than the Enbrel he wanted me to take. Enbrel is 1000 dollars a month for me to take it...no way under the sun can I afford that! So, Methotrexate was a better choice, plus its been around a lot longer and I was told it is safer. Its just these last 2 weeks I have felt bad...and I don't like that! OH! And the pharmacist told me to drink a lot of water during the day and that will help also. It will help flush out the kidneys and a lot of his clients have told him that it just makes them feel better. Luckily I drink lots of water every day and it is no problem. But my elbow...poor ole thing! It just plain hurts! Using it is hard...I tried Icy Hot but I have a raw patch of psoriasis that is healing and forgot about it...Oh my! The burning...LOL And my cat thinks Icy Hot is a mating call or something! She goes crazy when she smells wintergreen! So funny. Thanks RavenCajun...I do feel a wee bit better now :o) Deb

i was on eatratest for about 9 months and the only side effect I noticed was a little hair on my upper lip, which nair took care of. The main thing is for her to take them.

I had a hysterectomy in June, 2001. The feeling of surviving major surgery and the immediate menopause as opposed to gradually going through it is a lot to handle. There was anger, confusion, loss, uncertainty for about 5 months. I am taking Estratest (plant based HRT) and taking multivitamins and I also cut out the "white food". I feel almost "normal" again. I think talking with others who are going through this is most helpful. Having an understanding and supportive partner means so much. My husband offered lots of hugs, a shoulder to lean on and an ear to bend, even though neither of us knew how this would all turn out.

Hi All!,
I have been on Estratest for 15 years. I started taking it right after a complete hysterectomy. I was 48 at the time and I had NO problems what so ever. About 6 months ago I decided to go on half strength and have begun to have hot flashes. Also my libido has been reduced. This would not normally be a problem but I'm a newly wed as of December! My question is should I go back on full strength? The hot flashes are very annoying, so is the lack of libido.
