Can We Discuss Bone Density?
Comments (24)Hi no-green-thumb, Sorry it took me so long to see this post but you got some really good advice AND it seems like you are doing all of the right things for your bone health. I've known I had osteopenia since I was 55 (six years ago)(I'm very thin framed and a good candidate for osteoporosis) and was able to maintain, and in fact, increase my bone density ever so slightly through weight training, calcium, lots of Vitamin D. I also use Centrum Silver. After my total hysterectomy at 58, my bone density really decreased a lot within one year (no HRT because of breast cancer family history, but I increased my Vitamin D and Calcium and concentrated more on my weight training in the area where I had the bone loss. I just had a bone density test and it shows no further decrease, and again, a teeny increase. Today my doctor told me that if I hadn't worked out as much as I did or take the supplements, she really thinks I'd have osteoporosis. I know for certain exercise has kept my cholesterol levels unbelievably good since we have a family history of heart disease and my numbers are great....I also feel really, really good when I exercise (well, not during the exercise...but definitely after.) I am so glad you didn't take your doctor's advice about the Reclast, especially since you're borderline osteopenia. I bet the Vitamin D and calcium and the strength training you're doing will be much more beneficial with no side affects!...See MoreBone density scan experimental ??
Comments (6)I had a similar experience. I was ready for my mammo and the secretary told me that BCBS would not pay for it anymore. I was horrified and asked if I could call them from her phone which I did and got a customer service rep, told them I have two sisters who have had mastectomy's and she still refused so I asked for a supervisor and she refused so I requested that they put it in writing that I am not allowed to have the test. She asked me to hold and then another person came on and said it's okayed now. I asked him to send a fax to the unit where I was and I would wait on the line until it was received. It came and I've had them every year since, no questions. You have to be proactive....See MoreBone Density Scan
Comments (19)I have borderline osteoporosis and have had several bone density scans over the years. I've been on 4 different medications (including injectable Forteo) to try to boost bone density. It's very difficult to know if they actually help because you do not know what would have happened if not taking the meds. Maybe it would have been the same as with the meds. So people can take them out of fear of getting worse, or just skip it and hope for the best, get exercise, take calcium and other bone building supplements. Right now I'm taking Evista. I'm due for a scan but have skipped it for now but might do it another time. If I've dropped more, what am I going to do, try a fifth medication??...See MoreBone density scan at 9
Comments (10)Oh, absolutely. Your doctor should be able to fight for you as this test was absolutely necessary in diagnosing your problem. Please don't give up on this! Glad you're feeling a bit better, Paw, and hope that trend continues for both you and your poochie....See Morejudys_ont
