New John Deere EZtrak ZTR or commercial?
Comments (8)Well, a welded and fabricated commercial deck is great when you mow over new areas every day. But who does that, really? Oh, the commercial guys! Now I get it, you don't need a HEAVY fabricated deck unless you ram into every other rock and stump in sight (not that a 10AWG stamped deck is an issue here). You need the extra HEFT to support a deck like that, too. Weight adds more weight to support the added weight. You better believe that a 1200 pound mower is seemingly solid. It better be when all that weight above trying to destroy what's below. If you take some strength of materials classes, you'll find that the strongest structures are the lightest, too. Example? I can ram a Cox 1/2-A airplane into the ground at over 60MPH and all it does is fill the engine with dirt. Why? Thers is virtually no WEIGHT crashing forward into the structure! Balsa wood is light. Now get a bigger plane and the pieces go flying (pun intended). For a typical 2.0-3.0 acre yard, a 10AWG stamped deck is fine. You know what's out there, and nothing should compel you to buy way past your needs. I use a Z425 just fine. The drive system is commercial design. The engine isn't even an issue in my book. It will be a DECADE before you get enough hours on it ti wear it out at home. I logged 50 hours. So in ten YEARS it will have just 500 hours on it. Do the math. How you take care of it is it's life, not the use. The Deere isn't exactly light at 630 pounds, either. And, it has a lot of good features for the price. I likied the fit and finish over anything else at the $4,000.00 price point. Will more expensive mowers mow longer? Sure, but the fact is I'll never use one up in fifteen years let alone the Deere. We all like our toys to be bigger than our jobs. PS - I cut the 2 acres with a 20" Lawnboy push mower all season waiting to get the Deers on sale. OK, That was a job needing a bigger toy. The Deere is just big enough....See MoreNew conifer garden soon!

Comments (9)Hey, Southern gal! I'm your next door neighbor here in Ardsley. My favorite local nursery is Rosedale, which is just a few miles up the Saw Mill River Parkway in Hawthorne. They have a great selection and beautiful, healthy plants, although they're a bit pricey. I'll also stop in to Cherry Tree(?) Farms on Dobb's Ferry Road in Greenburgh, which is small, but good. When I'm looking for bargains I go to Sprainbrook- on the Ardsley/Scarsdale line. Their plants are not always in the best condition, but they have good sales and I've had good luck nursing plants back to health. If I have one piece of advice for gardening here in the rivertowns, I would tell you to watch out for the deer and other critters. I've seen herds of them standing right on Broadway in Irvington. Choosing deer resistant plants whenever possible and taking other protective measures (fencing, repellent sprays) will save you a lot of heartache. Good luck, and welcome! Comments (3)Go outside and look at the roof over the bathroom. There should be a white pipe sticking up through the roof. That's the vent pipe. There are places the smell could be coming from, so you have to do some looking. Take a large jug of water and pour some of it into every drain in the house. There's a U or P shaped trap for the water to collect so the sewer gas doesn't come through the sink. But don't forget the washing machine! Sometimes the drain for the washer can evaporate and the gas comes in from there....See Morecaimin74_yahoo_com
