telescoping wall mounted clothes drying rack?

Dear all -- do any of you have a telescoping (or fold down/up) wall-mounted clothes drying rack in your laundry area that doesn't sag and has held up over a fair amount of use?

I have to keep the actual floorspace in my laundry room free of clutter so was thinking about installing some wall mouted clothes drying racks to handle the stuff I'd rather not put in the dryer (running shorts, blankets, hand washables) but most of the racks I've seen on the interenet appear fairly flimsy or rather bulky. Ideally, I'd like to get something with a shallow profile when closed and not in use. Any recommendations?

QVC has a terrific clothes drying rack. It is sturdy and lightweight and can be used for many tasks. It folds up to almost nothing and can be stored in a tiny corner of a closet. It is called the Hangaway Collapsible Drying Rack. The Item Number for one rack is M7341. You can get two racks with a different Item Number but they are waitlisted. Do not buy the imitations that are showing up on other shopping channels. This is the only one that gets my seal of approval.

I have three different types of drying racks, and have used them alot, but now I love the clothes line we use in the basement even more. I was sitting drying racks over every furnace vent to dry clothes on rainy days, so we quickly figured out something better. I found 2 retractable (single line) clothes lines at Big Lots for $5 each. In an unfinished room in our basement I strung three lines from each line, for a total of 6 lines. I used large hooks in the studs to guide each line through. I ended up with enough line to hang all our clothes. Occasionally I use a drying rack along with the lines if there are extra things. On the back wall I also have a 6-foot length of clothes rod where I hang all our shirts/tops on hangers for drying. We installed a ceiling fan in the center of this room to move the air and aid drying. No more birds "bombing" your clothing. No more sun fading colors. No more pollen, bugs, or cottonwood fluff (which looks like snow outside right now). No wind or weather worries. I hardly ever hang clothes outside anymore since we installed the indoor line last fall and almost never use the dryer. It's really convenient because we can watch TV in the evening and do the clothes and get them hung before we go to bed. -Grainlady

evaperconti, I have to go back to IKEA and exchange some thing that was broke, so I'll look for that one. minikit, I don't have the room for a sweater dryer unfortunately and since it is only occasionally used for that I think I need something more universal. However I do want what I get to work for that as well. jamesk, that site has some good solutions. I like the pull-out line with multiple lines. That might be the ticket.

You have many more towels than I do so this may not be helpful. When I come home from the gym I put the towels in the dryer for a few minutes, then I put them in a place away from the other clothes to wait until I have a load of similar items. This minimizes stinky wet towels sitting around and helps keep the germs contained. While I use my bathroom towels more than once I don't like to use gym towels again - never know what is growing on them. If you do hang them up wet be sure there is adequate ventilation in the room. Not just to the rest of the house but to the outside. For drying clothes I use a drying rack I got at QVC. It is called the Hangaway drying rack and it can hold a lot of clothes and towels while still leaving room for them to dry out. It might work for you depending on how much room you have.

I dont know what kind of washer you have, but our Bosch front loader spins clothes so dry they rarely take more than 15 min to dry in the dryer. We hang things up all the time and there has never been a single drip from any of the air drying garments. When we remodeled our laundry room i had Cabinet Guy build an airing cupboard in one corner. It has a hanging bar and several vents in the top for air circulation, and is situated right next to the Hvac vent for that room. It was built on site with no floor so our vacuum can roll right into its spot without picking it up at all. The whole thing is really useful, and if we did not have it the pulley dryer would be a great alternative. We considered this drying rack but it doesnt hang enough stuff, and i wanted wallpaper and it would have covered too much of the wall. So if you arent sold on the Sheila Maidyou could considerone of these, or if you are putting in cabs, fit one with a rod and vent holes at top. These products are supposed to be very well built (Swiss) and they have a couple of rather nice looking ceiling mounted racks.

IKEA has some neat stuff for this. I have the wall mount one called FROST but haven't mounted it yet (making renovation plans now for the laundry area) but the item is VERY sturdy. It's a set of metal rods that can be pulled up for use and then flipped back down against the wall once you're done. I can't wait to install it in my new laundry area. The rods are a bit thicker width so that I can actually hang wet clothes without making the unit sag or without the clothes touching together over the rail. Again, I have not used it yet but this is how it seems like it will work. IKEA had other dryers at the store that I might try also for drip drying bras and things that can dangle and don't have to be laid out flat for drying.

You might check out the offering from NatureDry. I've had the ArtDry model for years. It's very sturdy and collapses completely into a wall bracket that's only about 2" deep. It works very well for things like towels and garments. Not quite sure if it would be big enough for something like a blanket, but NatureDry also has bigger and more substantial models. I've been very pleased with the rack I have.
