What brand dimmable CFL flood light do you like best?

We just had recessed cans put in our kitchen ceiling. Incandescent lights were too hot (the ceiling is rather low), so we've switched to GE R30 CFL dimmable flood lights. At Costco today, I purchased some Feit Electric R30 dimmable flood lights. They were significantly less expensive than the GE bulbs I bought at Target. I have not replaced any bulbs yet because I read a few negative comments about the Feit bulbs while doing some research on the internet. Anyone have an opinion about the GE vs. Feit Electric bulbs? Thanks so much.

My favorite, by far, is the new cold cathode 18W PAR bulb from Ushio. The model is 3000538. It is not cheap, but it works which is saying a lot when it comes to dimmable CFLs.

Make sure that you are using a Lutron or Leviton dimmer made after 1995. This goes for all dimmable CFLs.

We have used the GE21716 which is a dimmable R40 CFL. It just didn't cut it. Neither GE or Feit are at the cutting edge when it comes to dimmable CFLs.

I used a Philips dimmable R30 floodlamp that buzzed *loudly*, especially when dimmed (with a high-end Lutron dimmer from after 1995). I had to move it to a non-dimmed location to get it run quietly. This dimmer switch controlled about 8 recessed lights, the others still had halogen light bulbs in them, not sure if mixing halogen/incandescent and CFLs on the same dimmer is problematic.

The manufacturer is Elite Lighting, and it's a 6" can. There's some paint in that one so I can't read the entire label, but it shows catalog number B6PLRIC-26-E. From some Googling, I believe this is it (though I'm not sure where the "26" comes in). So yes, it does appear to be a remodel can, which is good news. I knew it was added during a remodel (before we owned the house), but I thought they'd pulled down the ceiling, so I assumed it would be a new construction can. So, perhaps not as bad as I thought. To make sure I understand, the idea is to pull out the can, remove the incoming line voltage from the ballast, and pigtail on a GU24 connector, feeding that back into the existing can, right? Or I imagine I could pull the balast and can out completely and put in a new can without a ballast, though that seems somewhat wasteful...

Just for for the record, from experience: Greenlite's dimmable R40's, of which we have 16 in 3 different rooms, are 2700k. Just like an incandescent. They have the same warm color at any dim level, and look just fine. And they do stick slightly out of the can. But, as was pointed out earlier, nobody spends time looking at the ceiling. Except an architect who was over with a friend a couple of months back, and proceeded to lecture us on lighting and how halogens would "look cleaner," and didn't stop to ask first who was paying the electrical bills!

Last year I bought some exterior sconce type lights at Costco (as of last week the had them again) that I love the style but HATE the light they give off. They have pretty crackle glass, open at the bottom and you don't see any lightbulbs. I figured they would be super easy to clean. The lightbulbs are tiny things up in the "ceiling" of the fixture and are supposed to last for ages, so I think they are LED fixtures. Problem is I HATE the color of the light they give off. My porch still has a regular old fashioned type fixture/bulbs and that light is much warmer and yellower compared to the ones describe above. Since both the sconces and the old porch light are on the same switch, they are always on together and the difference in the color of the light they give off really bugs me. The color of the LEDS may have improved, but not enough for me.

So I searched and searched and finally found a dimmable LED I really like -- not too white, not too yellow and they dim in the same color. It's made by TCP. 12W = 85W; 3000K; 875 Lumens. I checked the manufacturer's website and found a local distributor that stocked them, bought four, tried them, liked them and went back to buy the rest. The new lighting lets my light gray walls look light gray instead of sickly khaki. It was worth the trial-and-error to end up finding bulbs that really work for me. FWIW, the product number is LED 12BR30D30K.

It is unwise to buy the cheapest lamp available and expect it to work well in a fixture for which it is not designed. Go to a professional electrical supply house and ask for their advice and be willing to pay more for better good brand like Sylvania. The cost efficiency of a lamp depends more on how long it will last than its initial purchase price.

On Feb 9 2009 I purchased 5 two packs of the FEIT Electric ECObulbs Dimmable Compact Fluorescent 23W=100. In the first week 3 fried. I spoke with their customer support and explained what I have and on their suggestion I replaced my 1000W digital dimmer switch with a 600W mechanical dimmer switch. I went back to Home Depot and they cheerfully replaced the bulbs. Since then 5 more have failed. For those of you that haven't done the math thats 80% failure in eleven days. today is Feb 21 2009. Unless FEIT can come up with a reasonable explanation for their products dismal performance I will be returning all 10 and going back to incandescent.

I am an electrician and did research. I called Leviton (a dimmer company) for a workable dimmer/bulb combination. They have not had good success or lamp life from their dimmers and any brand of bulb.

I then called Lutron (another dimmer company) for the same. They have had good success with only two of their dimmers and only one brand/type of bulb.

Can find these dimmers and bulbs with an Internet search. I would suggest only the above referenced models together for longevity. (Dimmable CFL bulbs cost 3 times regular CFL.)

I purchased 12 Neptun dimmable 16w R40 bulbs 16 months ago. 4 have already burned out. At least they provide a 2 year warranty but shipping costs for 1 bulb at a time gets expensive. Has anyone else experienced such a high rate of failure from dimmable bulbs?
