Hate my dated fireplace

We've been slowly trying to modernise our home, and this fireplace is in our family room which is pretty bare at the moment. We have been getting rid of outdated furniture, and with Christmas over, I figured it was a good time to do something with the fireplace.

Room colour will change, and popcorn removal is going to begin soon.

I don't want to have brick to the ceiling (house built in 1990), and was wondering about having it mud-over, or maybe drywall put over the brick??? We will get a nice, clean modern looking mantel as well.

What can I do with the "seat" area? It's awful to look at, but I think the fireplace would cost me a lot to have everything lowered to the ground, right? Maybe tile over??? Square off?

Advice and suggestions appreciated.

Mari
