converting canaster lights to hang a pendant light

Is there a product available that will allow me to convert or adapt my 5 inch Progress can light that has been in my ceiling 20 yrs, so that I can install a pendant light in the same spot and get the electricity from the old can light. I am trying to avoid taking out the can light and tearing up my ceiling.

Somebody posted one recently I think on the kitchen forum. You might want to repost there, so someone who remembers better than I do can link you to it.

Lowes has a conversion kit - also try googling "recessed light conversion kit". I've not used any of these but it seems as easy at changing a light bulb. Several styles out there.

If you want to use the existing locations, consider semi flush mount rather than pendant. You can install a kit to convert the can lights to accept a regular fixture. If you are open to moving locations, then an electrician can wire for pendants over the island, and you can get the holes patched. It all depends on the budget. Good luck!

Thanks for providing the photo! It helps me visualize your situation better. Since you're using two pendants, try spacing them at least 30” apart and equidistant from the center point of the island. If you're a visual person like me, you can even get out some painters' tape, find the center point of the island, mark that point with the tape and then use more tape to outline the two equal sides of the island from the center. That way you can see where to hang the pendants in those sides and decide if, for example, you might want to hang them up a few inches higher to avoid any possible head-hitting concerns with the overhang. (You can certainly do that! Our guidelines are only guidelines--if you need to have things a little different, that's OK too.)

You center the top that attaches to the ceiling over the center of your table. BTW those Edison bulbs are close to useless for lighting the lowest light is hung so that it is 30" from the table top in this case the two heads one globe on cylinder IMO the center one does not matter it will automatically be right.

HD also has a conversion kit, I think under the Hampton Bay name.
It is in the lighting section.

I used one several years ago in a remodel-worked great!

I used one from Globe lighting several months ago. I have been happy with it and a relatively easy install. Here is a link that might help.

I have a dumb question--if I were to use a conversion kit like this on an older non-insulation contact recessed can, may I put insulation over (or in contact with) the can afterwards? It would seem that the heat generated by the bulb would be dispersed in the kitchen air space and that the edison connection adapter should not generate significant amount of heat.
