The Kitchen Table

Did anyone else hear this?

Or did I dream it? Or am I going nuts?

Was in bed last night, on the verge of going to sleep--DH was listening to the radio, and said he just heard a report about wallboard (sheet rock?) from China, that's being used in new homes. Apparently the stuff has dry rot, is disintegrating, and is destroying the electrical and plumbing systems. I think he said the LT Governor of Florida (or some other Florida official) was one of the ones whose house is very damaged. It's all costing a fortune for the contractors to replace this stuff.

Anyone else aware of this? Or did I just THINK DH told me that, and I dreamed that involved scenario (he leaves before I get out of bed in the morning, so didn't have the chance to ask him.)

That might explain why they are giving away sheetrock here.
There was a sign alongside the highway. I stopped and asked about it, and was told it was defective and they had to get rid of it and were giving it away. It was at a new school in a nearby town. Up to that point, they had given away 35 trailer loads and had more to get rid of.

(My husband had me go see about it, because one of his friends was interested in it. After I called my husband back, he said, forget it. He wouldn't be interested.)

I told him, Oh, well...what do you expect for free

But, that would really make me mad it I had bought some of it.

Snakes, water buffalo, and cows? Indeed sad, I could maybe understand the cows and buffalo because they are large animals, still sick though. When I first saw this I didn't realize it had taken place in Columbia until I looked it up on the web. I guess it just really hit home with me because I'm an animal lover and have two labs myself, when they showed the dogs at the airport they looked to be only about eight months old, and I had never heard of this. I guess I do lead a very sheltered life! We don't usually hear of this kind of news on Canadian t.v. What we hear on the news I'm sure is only the tip of the ice burg.

RI Flower show- did anyone else go?

We went Saturday. I have gone to all but one year of RI (last year). I think by far this was the best year for the displays and exhibits! I think the integrated show theme (music/symphony), use of more sophisticated hardscapes, plantings, etc. greatly improved the displays so they are approaching the New England Flower Show quality. Of course the show is much smaller than New England. We went to two talks. One called "Creating Your Landscape for Seasonal Enjoyment" and "Streptocarpus Plants: A Gift From Nature". I ended up buying a couple of Steptocarpus plants after the talk. Both talks were great. I hear that Aidrian Bloom spoke Friday. Did anyone hear him speak? I think the exhibit area was much smaller and the seed vendor that I like to go to wasn't there. Also the houseplant section where people exhibit their houseplants was much smaller. This is usually one of my favorite areas of the show since it is great to see some unusual house plants. Sue I have some pictures I'll try to post.

Water displacement is safer than the straw and easier in many ways. Fill a small pot or large bowl with water. Put your food in your hot safe bag. Ease the bottom of the bag down into the water, keeping hold of both sides of the top edges so you don't get water in the bag. When the water is nearly at the zipper (you can slightly fold or add water as necessary), zip it closed. The pressure of the water pushes out the air. You can use a temperature regulator with any vessel of water to then cook as if under vacuum (i.e., sous vide). The vacuum is used by caterers to season and portion individual servings a day or two ahead of an event. It keeps the food safe, assists the marinade to get into the meat, etc., and doesn't come open while being chucked from box to box while counting, etc. Nearly vacuum, with the water displacement method, is fine for home use. Vacuum might help the marinade, but isn't required. Temperature regulation is, and at a significantly lower temperature than nearly boiling. What was described in "The Hack" was old fashioned "boil in bag" cooking, which was popular for awhile decades ago, especially for vegetables, before countertop microwaves became affordable enough that everyone had one. It makes mushy food, especially chicken. Considering all the homemade temperature regulators we've seen from people like Dcarch and Arley, made out of Radio Shack type parts, wouldn't it have been more useful if they'd told how to make your own? Rather than pretending they're doing sous vide? I guess this bothers me so much because people will try what they've said and be unhappy with the results.

I had the exact same problem only with painted doors. I provided the finishing company with SW Origami White and the sample they sent back had a noticeable yellow cast to it. I asked about it and they said another client who specified Origami White had accepted that color. That should’ve been my first clue. Two more attempts (and same issue), then our builder slapped some Origami White on a trim board and said, “Here, tell them to match this.” I did and they did, perfectly. Then they asked why didn’t give them the sample to begin with. Um, because you asked for a color name? Turns out they weren’t using SW paint and were trying to match it using codes. It didn’t work. Matching to a sample of the actual paint did work though. Lesson learned.

You did better than I did--whatever I googled didn't come up with anything.

Well, at least I know I'm not having bizarre, home improvement dreams (anything's possible these days--what with trying to fix up 2 homes simultaneously, and I WAS scraping wallpaper off wallboard yesterday, so I was wondering....)

I can't imagine that the companies that sell it would be any money ahead by having it made in China...

Wouldn't it cost a fortune to have that heavy stuff shipped from there?

If our country and others would quit using China they would start throwing crap our way and making it right.

They are probably laughing their heads off at us.

I heard they also found some Made in China electrical extension cords that were filled with cloth twine. Certainn that would cause a fire. Always look for the UL label.
