Q: Minimum distance (between ceiling & cabinet) for lighting?

My kitchen will have 8' ceilings and three separate wall cabinets (one 60" wide & two 16" wide on each side of range hood). The cabinets will be dropped down from the ceiling for an unfitted look and I want to have fluorescent lights above (and below) the cabinets.

I'd like to know if you think 6" is sufficient space for lighting between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling? Or should it be 9"? Really don't want to drop them 12". The center portion of the 60" cab may be raised up 3" just to give some interest.

I have no experience with above cabinet lighting, so I'm concerned that it may look too harsh if the light is confined to a small area. Oh, how I wish we had taller ceilings!

Thanks in advance.
