Need re-upholstery advice (and maybe rug advice, too)

We have two old chairs in our living room that dh is very sentimentally attached to. The chairs have been in his family for years, although no one really remembers where they came from. They have resided in the living rooms of many family members over the years, but both of them ended up with us about 10 years ago. At that time, they were upholstered in a hard wearing but heinous brown and yellow tweed that was starting to come apart in some areas.

I found some upholstery fabric that I loved (at the time), and on a whim, had the chairs re-upholstered. Unfortunately, while the upholstery looked okay, he did not replace any of the foam or padding, and the chairs are now full of hard edges and pokey parts that make them less comfortable to sit on. I now want to have the chairs redone properly, and I could really use suggestions on the what kind/colour of fabric to use.

Here is an older picture of our living room:

The brown leather sofa and the matching loveseat (not seen) are staying. I like the rug, but have been looking for something a little different - I'm toying with the idea of a cream coloured shag with tufts of brown that is currently at Costco.

The armchair is a Morris-style. The rocker could probably best be described as grandma-style, but it is comfortable and well loved. I didn't make a good choice in my previous fabric selection - I think the scale just reads too big and too busy. I *think* I would prefer a print to a solid, but maybe a small print that reads solid? I just don't know...

Here is a closer look at the chair (minus the sheepskins/blankets!):

Anyway, if you made it this far, please weigh in. I live in Canada, so buying anything online is kind of a crap-shoot, but I just need some suggestions on where to start (The upholsterer that I will be hiring this time around is just a local person I have hired for some smaller jobs in the past; he does not supply fabric).

Thanks,

Carrie
