Pancake Puff Pan - anyone have one?

DS wanted one when he saw the infomercial on TV. I saw it at Big Lots for a discounted price so bought it today. Basically you use pancake batter and make puff ball type pancakes. You can also put filling on the inside with a Filling Injector. Not sure how that works exactly. I guess I will be trying it out for our Sunday breakfast.

Anyone make them and how did they turn out? Any hints?

AAH! An aebelskeever pan! Danish pancakes!
Yes....turn out great....use a wooden skewer or a knitting needle to turn them....turn them a little at a time.
Somewhere on the web is a video showing how to cook them...it's a little bit of a trick to turn a little at a time so they fill in and brown all over....but good and fun.

Aebleskiver - apple slice pancakes. When done well these are delicious. I haven't seen the pans for sale. Let us know how you do with yours.

Just to follow up my OP. When I went to JC Penney, I ended up buying two pans. Penney's was having a huge sale on the Circulon 12" non-stick, originally $59, on sale for $17.99! So I bought that Circulon 12" pan, and also the Cooks Tri-Ply linked above, except in the 10" size. I decided I didn't like the handles on the Cooks hard-anodized, so that choice was out of the running. The 10" pan size is actually more practical, since I use it more frequently. But I am glad to have the 12" size for those times I have a big amount for the pan. Having now used both the Circulon and the Tri-Ply non-stick, I'd say the Tri-Ply is slightly preferable. Mostly for cleaning; they both cook equally well. The Circulon, with its tiny ridges (that help with the non-stick ability) is a slightly bit harder to clean cause you have to make sure all the ridges are clean. It's not a big deal, maybe another 30-45 seconds of cleaning over the Tri-Ply nonstick. Hope my post helps anyone else looking for non-stick pans that are inexpensive but still cook well. I know there is another thread on this Forum where someone doesn't like their T-Fal nonstick. I saw those T-Fals in the store, and felt they were really lightweight, compared to other pans in that same price ballpark. I am glad I chose the JC Penney's Cooks Tri-Ply, and would recommend it.

A lot of years ago, I was at a household auction ( one of my favorite things to do!) and there was an ebelskiver pan and krumkaka baker and a rosette iron with several "attachments" and I bought them all for maybe $2.50. I didn't know from beans about ebelskivers but asked my Danish friend how to make them....she said you just mix up pancake batter, grease the pan, fill about 2/3 full of batter and when ready, flip them with a knitting needle...Oh yes and you might want to put some apple sauce in the middle before you flip them... Yeah! Right! I tried it once...made a mess and stuck it away in the "seldom used items" cupboard. So this morning, reading these postings, I began to drool....looked at Chef Arne's video and drooled more and thought piece of cake! I had an appoint ment at 11 and then needed to run some errands.....and all the time I am thinking "ebelskivers....ebelskivers...ebelskivrs....MMMM! So when I got home I decided to make a small batch for lunch. I used 1/2 of julie's recipe... What I discovered.....I need more practise!!!! Mixed up a batch....looked thick so I added a little more buttermilk. Heated the pan, put a dab of butter into each hole and began to fill them with batter....but before I got the 4th one filled the butter in the empty holes had bagun to burn and smoke....wiped it out added more and added the batter but by then the first that I poured were beginning to get vry brown on the edges, so I gave them a 1/2 turn, a la Chef Arne, and then completed the turn....they were a little dark on the undersice but not toobad.....turned the fire down....I waited, turned them again...perfect round balls by the way....turned again and the undersides were really beginning to burn....I stuck a skewer into the middle and it came out moist....but they were burning on the outside....so I left them as much longer as I thought I dared and put them on a plate....put a glop of my apple pie jam next to them and proceeded to cut into one lushous puff... And Voila! I had invented something new! Molten lava ebelskivers!...Filled with runny uncooked batter! So back to the pan. I decided that the batter was still too thick, that the pan was too hot and that I had filled the cups too full. So I thinned the batter some more, added the butter very quickly and poured the pans about 2/3 full......they took longer to get done enough to turn, bur finally they were cooked enough to hold a shape and I did that little 1/2 turn thingdy....and they spilled liquid batter into the cup....so I waited a bit and completed the turn...but there was not enough batter....and what I ended up with was little sort of dough cups, slightly blackened on the outside. For 7 years now we have had this set up. All our copper skillets/saute pans hang on the Lee Valley Rack on the wall along with our utensils. My oldest son and his wife are professional chefs and I worked in one of their restaurants as the dishwasher for 5 years. After that experience when I re-did my kitchen I wanted everything at hand. I love it ! Wouldn't change a thing and the 1500 cfm hood insures that we don't have "stuff" all over the pots or the open shelves. Also everything gets used all the time as we cook a lot. another pic and you can see part of the open shelves that are to the right and over the sink area. All our daily used serving dishes and glasses and plates are on these shelves. They get wiped down to get clean the dust about 2x a year. That is all they need. in this pic you can see the open sliders down at the bottom that hold more pots and the iron skillets and lids. better view and shows the cab at bottom right with the rest of the pots . All in all everything can be reached with no steps or one step. Extremely efficient and as I said has worked great for 7 years. Hope this helps. We do have a LONG haired cat that weighs 20#...still not a problem. c this shot of the open shelves was early on in remodel ..has changed as far as content but otherwise the same.

Melanie, thanks for the follow up. "Glass Land" came from the fact that I have a "plastic land" - that's my husband's name for where all the rubbermaid/gladware/and, yes, we have one of those carousel storage systems is. If I could figure out how to embed a picture in these posts, I'd attach a picture of my current glass land. I have everything stacked on top of each other - DH refuses to put dishes away in it. I feel like drawers won't help with accessibility very much - I'll still have to stack items on top of each other. Diamond actually has a couple of pictures that show this same pull-out really loaded up, and it looks very versitile. Both pullouts can slide separately so there's no reaching under and over things. I still would have to stack items, no question, but it seems like a better option than just a regular 2 pullout trays. I've been eyeing those pans at Williams-Sonoma for quite a while. If you go to their website and search for "pancake" under the recipes section, it'll give you 11 different variations for ebelskivers. Banana filled graham cracker pancakes, chocolate chocolate chip puffed pancakes, lemon-mascarpone filled, and many assorted fruit fillings. They all look so good! They also have a little video in the product listing section that shows you how to make them. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, recipes and links. DS can't wait till breakfast tomorrow. I just picked some apples off our tree so maybe try the apple one.

Congrats on your new toy. Maybe this book will help you use the pan in more, shall we say, well rounded applications.

Curses because I fell for the power of your suggestion and bought one online a few hours ago. Wasn't paying attention and I bought the small Norpro version. No biggie. Ha, that was funny.

Clare....even though it looks simple when Arne does it....it takes practice....lots of practice....I hope you have lots of hungry mouths to gobble up your mistakes!And one thing that Arne's video doesn't show is how to grease the pans....don't put a puddle of butter....just brush ro wipe the pan with melted butter or oil.

It worked!!! And they looked so cute! Both DH and DS really liked them. They are a winner! I also liked them for myself in regards to portion size. I just ate 2 little ones instead of a big pancake. Probably the same amount but it seemed like I was sticking to my diet more.

Yes, it is a little more difficult then it looks in the video. It takes awhile to master the technique. Keep turning, medium low heat and spray oil the pan each time worked for me. Also do the middle one last because it cooks the fastest.

They were also maybe more difficult because I used Krusteaz WW pancake mix. So some looked more like the surface of the moon then a nice smooth ball but they tasted good. And I served them with sauted apple slices (Staymen-Winesap from our tree) with a little powdered sugar and Penzeys cinnamon.
