Can a cracked marble vanity top be repaired?

Hi all, on January 3rd I had cappuccino marble vanity{{gwi:807}} tops installed. I did not notice a crack on the day I paid. However, we have not used that area or the bathroom yet as husband had to finish grouting the shower and I had to do some paint touch-ups and other mis. Two days ago after cleaning the tops I noticed a crack that covers the six inches from the small side end toward the sink. It is not real noticeable unless the light hits it just right. I am worried though about the few tiny tiny ragged bits in the mid section of the crack. I have a call into the installer but would like a bit of education. I would like to just have it repaired. Would they use epoxy? If so, would the top then be good to go with no worries down the road?

This is the best close-up I can get. It starts at this end and did stop short of the sink. However, today (still have not used bathroom) the crack had spread to marble lip on under-mount area.

I can not get a good picture due to the glare. First picture shows the crack and in 2nd picture the crack is in between the pencil line for more clarification.

Repairs can be made with resin and color matching, but it'll come down to whether you're happy with the repair. Is the room being kept regular indoor temps? I'm just wondering if the crack is from a flaw that was already there, installation method, or what it's attached to is expanding/contracting.

Since it was recently installed, I would first have a serious discussion with the supplier about replacement. Even if you choose to try repair first, have a clause that allows replacement if you're not happy with the results.

Thanks Annz, unless they do a real nasty job of it I am pretty sure I would be happy with a repair. You have to get in just the right lighting to notice the crack at all but I do not want it to widen.

My concern though is whether or not a crack repair is a permanent solution.

I would not want to forfeit the chance early in the game of having it replaced.
They are coming today to have a look. When I called the gal said wow we have Never had that happen. I find it hard to believe it never ever happened with a marble top install because I do know it can happen.

I did not do my normal research and job overseeing because I have used this company before for countertop fabrication and they went well beyond fabulous. However, it was all different employees this time around.

Is your soapstone soft? If it is you can try using a jigsaw to cut around the hole, or a carbide router bite, once you have a hole drilled. It the stone is a harder variety, it might be too much for you. I have done soft soapstone (can scratch with your fingernail) with good luck, but the hard soapstone, (the kind that doesn't scratch with your fingernail) you probably wont be happy with the results. But that has been my luck. The straight cuts should do well with either, but the curves and the finishing are different. I had a plan to make my second sink for the current remodel and couldn't finish the surface with my tools, I would have needed stone sanding tools. So I scraped the plan. My first sink and counters turned out fabulous, but it was very easy to file and sand by hand. I have such a rough grit on the surface that I don't ever see any scratches. I love this, and they are all remnant no larger than 12" wide, except for the base of the sink: A link that you may have seen, or maybe not. Not gonna be a DIY repair. IF it can be repaired, it will take a pro with tinted 2 part epoxy and a lot of color matching skill and patience and a lot of your $$. In the end, it's probably cheaper to replace the marble or live with it as is. Vintage charm and all.

You can inject some 2 part clear epoxy into it, but you were given a "second" with poor quality stone and an even poorer fit for the undermount sink. I know it seems counter intuitive to throw something pretty away, but you'd be better off not putting that into your home. It will eventually crack somewhere else, and the caulk that is the only thing between you and a wet vanity cabinet will degrade and leak at some point. It's a given that you will need to do a monthly inspection on it and keep it up. If you can't cut it into coasters and salvage the sink for something else, it belongs in the rubbish bin from which it was rescued.

Hi, so we bought bathroom vanity 60”W. Didnt realize the top was already glued on the vanity. I can bring extra men to carry it upstairs but my stairs are narrow and angled so I am afraid its not enough space for three men to move this thing up, pivoting. The whole vanity is about 300 lbs, so I am thinking it would be easier if I can separate the marble top and the vanity. Does anyone have experience doing this without damaging the vanity and the marble top? Thanks in advance.
