to start gardening except for a few cold weather things. My garden still needs a lot of clean up too..........but.........I bought `12 cabbage plants and 4 bundles of onions and planted them yesterday. I have them covered at the moment.......not because of the cold but because the rabbits will get them when they are really young so I cover them. I still have two bundles of onions to put in the ground.......

Well it's a start...We'll have another freeze or two but shouldn't be anything to serious but you never know. Mother Nature doesn't like us to start gardening till about mid April and I know that because I have put too many tomato plants in the ground in March only to have her smack me good.........so time to get out and start the clean up..

You are so lucky, I can't even think of gardening for another couple of months. Sometimes I wonder why the heck Ilive in Wisconsin.

Ruthie, the Oklahoma Gardening forum people are busy planting the cabbage and onion plants. It isn't to early for them. But you are right on the tomatoes. They need LOTS more warmth.

Hi! I'm certainly not an expert, but I've been told to start around April 15th. I think that is when I potted my bulbs last year and they did great. Good luck!

Thanks, Michelle, I think I can understand maybe 10 cylces or so. But hey, whatever - like I said, it's the hardware affecting durability and servicability that I want to talk about, and most people at the store just give you a stammering reply there. My Maytag died after 6 years, which is atrocious IMHO. The bearings seized on the motor. No, you can't change them, it's a new motor and belt for $130, with me doing the work. I want to have some idea that if I dump a grand into a washing machine, I'm buying a good motor and drum and solenoid valves and hoses, not fancy firmware that ends up shorting out due to insuffcient control housings. But at least I know I don't need steam! Thanks, all! BTW I'm leaning towards a Bosch 500 (WFMC5301UC). Hoping the door mold issue is gone, and hoping someone knows something about them. Looks like either that or the LG TROMM, but I like the layout of the Bosch's controls and the way the door frame allows easier access to the drum. But I guess that's kind of wondering off-topic for this thread. I'm searching for info here and elsewhere, so thought I'd mention it.

The past couple of years of both of their lives was exhausting for us (their caregivers). I'm 49 and have 3 teenagers and own a shop. Days were none stop from the moment I woke until the moment I fell into bed. I wouldn't change it for the world. I had one sister who thought they needed taking care of. Would it have been easier? Yes for us. Would it have been better? Not if its something they weren't ready for, which they weren't. The past 4 months, cleaning out their home of 87 years of life has been the hardest thing I've ever had to do and the most rewarding. I'm still not completely finished. The house is empty and waiting to be sold. I go in about once a week to make sure all is ok and I leave knowing that I was able to help two wonderful people be happy and content right up to the end. I hope If I'm lucky enough to live to be 87 that I'll be right were I want to be when I die. It might be assisted living or a smaller home or right where I am right now. I hope my children will not make me choose which things are important to me by their standards. I understand what you're saying and I'm glad you were able to help your parents live out their lives. I think, however, that the balance is different if there's only one of you doing the caretaking (along with job/career and family obligations) and/or if the "destination" is not death but long-term care. Right now my 70-something mother is caring for my wheelchair-bound brother. He has a degenerative disease that, for better or worse, does not really affect his lifespan. I am responsible for his care after my mother passes on. It is not possible for me to provide my brother with the full-time care he needs and keep any kind of decent-paying job -- nevermind the career I have now. He really will need to move to a nursing home -- a shame, because he will be a generation younger than almost anyone else there and because, at some hours of the day, he does pretty well for himself. Nursing home spots -- especially at good facilities (or, very especially, at one that can better serve people his age) -- don't open up automagically when you need them. So my mother and I have agreed that, if we find a good spot for my brother before it actually is needed on a daily basis, it would make sense to move him there and let him acclimate to this new stage in his life. My brother likely will not be ready for that whenever it happens. At this point, my brother rarely understands the limitations imposed by this disease. We're doing what we can to prepare him. But the time ultimately will not be of his choosing. When my mother passes on, my brother may have to deal not only with that loss, but with a complete change in his living accommodations. Moving him to a care facility - especially before it's absolutely necessary -- is not easy, either. But, for him, we think it will be the better way to go.

Oh, those kin, lol! I deal with them on a grand scale as they quickly come to line the periphery of the many "wetland depressions" we are building in some of our stormwater mitigation areas. This is all cut/treat with herbicide and thankfully, all I have to do these days is note the problem in a report, the work then being carried out via private contractor. It is annoying none the less. We're after all native vegetation at these sites and cottonwood is, of course, native. But we simply do not want all of these things 100% cottonwood, so along with another native woody plant-sandbar willow-considerable effort is dedicated to such work, the payoff being lots of bulrushes, bur reed, sweet flag, blue flag iris, etc. All that instead of just one plant-cottonwoods. +oM

I have a couple of hollyhocks started indoors. Can't plant anything outdoors until May here in Colorado. :0)

I love hollyhocks and should get some. I bought a couple after we moved here but with all the cancer they didn't get watered properly and died.........maybe this year. My neighbor works at the local garden center and she told me when I first got here not to do tomatoes until after Easter..and that's a good rule to live by....

Yes, we have the Memorial Day pretty much as our time line here, for planting out. But that doesn't stop us from getting excited about new plants, etc. I haven't done any winter sowing this year as I ran out of space to plant the results last year, and just shoved everything in the ground for safekeeping. I'll worry about them when the weather is nicer.

My gardens say it is time to start planting. It may not be time for tomatoes, but my herbs are coming back up from the roots and the daffodils, hycinth, and crocus are popping out. The ferns I brought in from outside last fall have really started growing lately.

According to what I have read it doesn't do any good to plant tomatoes early because they won't do anything until the ground warms up. I have never had a vegetable garden, just flower gardens, but have grown tomatoes for years. I had enough of vegetable gardens as a child.

Here in SE Ok. I have all my onions (5 variaties) in the ground, also my potatoes and pepper seeds. Tomorrow I will plant my broc and brussel sprouts.

I have my onions in and growing a bit already. I don't do cabbages cuz they are uber cheap around these parts, so I use my garden space for the pricier veggies. I won't need to do tomatos for canning this year, just a few plants for fresh eating, and no more beans, okra, or bell peppers. Maybe one bell pepper for fresh too. I;ll do cukes, squash and stuff... and a few annual flowers too.

I am so very ready to busy myself out of doors. I have a large flower border to clean up and redo with roses and daylilies... with a dab of cosmos here and there.

Come on Spring...

I cleaned out one garden yesterday,and that's all i could manage to do for the day.Between the cancer and the age,can't get near as much done as i used to.But i;ll keep trying.

Went out this morning and picked 2 doz oranges and noticed that one of the tomatoe plants from last year is coming back up.The peach tree is loaded with blooms,and the yellow plum is starting to bloom as well.

My oranges are soooooooooooooo good,i eat them 2 at a time,so no lack of vitamin C for me.
