How do I store bulbs I was supposed to plant by now?
Comments (20)Last weekend the ground in my yard was fine! Thinking there was plently of time left in the season, I was easily taken in by the great sale at bloomoingbulb.com and I ordered more 100 bulbs on Monday. They arrived on Thursday-- with free extras! I forced myself out into the sunny, but 30 degree garden this afternoon and planted half of the sale bulbs. I planted 66 bulbs through 2 inches of frost encrusted top soil! I have enough bagged dirt to pot up and force the daffodils and "queen of the night" tulips included free with my order. Now, I just have to figure out what to do with the remaining 50 mixed darwin tulips once destined for a fixed, raised bed (an idea abandoned due to advice from this site). Taking a tip from cindi_in_ks' post in another thread, I had the idea tonight they could be planted in the still exposed electrical trench dug this summer for our new garage. The trail of mounded dirt runs right through the middle of the lawn, but is probably the last open area big enough for 50 bulbs. Like cindi says, I can always move them next Spring. I'd cut a new plot in the grass, but the grassy areas *do* seem to be frozen. I'll be back outside tomorrow-- it should be close to 40! Good luck to the rest of you. Just remember you are saving the life of a flower with every bulb you get in the ground this Fall....See MoreWhat can I do myself if building with a builder?
Comments (17)Normally, a Construction Contract might give an Owner control of the Design and Documentation and allow purchasing of certain specified materials delivered to the site, but the General Contractor would have full control of the Work including Means & Methods and Safety. It is possible to add a clause to the Contract for the Owner's Forces but it should clearly stipulate what Work that would be for, how it would be scheduled and coordinated, and how the liability and insurance would be divided. The other major concern (as others have mentioned) is that removing Work from the Contract reduces the GC's income and in most contracts the GC is allowed to retain the OH&P (markup) if it was not specifically excluded. However, contractors are finding it difficult to keep their forces busy much less make a profit so it may be wise to negotiate with your favored contractor early rather than bidding the project. It's difficult to beat a low markup on a Cost of the Work contract if you can supply some of the materials. But be careful about what you supply because the quality of internet materials is generally lower than what an architect would specify and the installer/GC would have no responsibility for failure and it opens up the possibility that the manufacturer and installer will blame each other for a failure and you will be left holding the bag. So, it is often wiser to let the GC supply the materials at a reduced markup. I am finding that many will forgo any markup for costs over an Allowance so low allowance values can work in your favor (if you anticipate the inevitable cost overruns in your contingency budget). But I find that the lowest cost method is a Cost of the Work with a Fixed Fee and a 50/50 Shared Savings (with or without a Guaranteed Maximum Price) because it most closely aligns the interests of the Owner and the GC (something that is completely missing in most projects whether you realize it or not). But that usually requires a very knowledgeable GC willing to do the paper work and an experienced Owner, Consultant, or architect to monitor it....See MoreGE reveal bulb
Comments (12)Well I'm done buying the reveal incandescent. I just had another one go out in less than a month. That's 5 or 6 bulbs now. I thought the only difference was the color/coating on these, but they keep going out (different lights). I'm using the correct wattage. Lee - Thanks for the LED info. I believe I'm going to try them next. Tuesday - I do like the color of the light from those CFL's and had them in the spare rooms for a while. With the mercury content I just not comfortable with them in the house. With the costs of the new lights, does it really actually save anything in the long run? I'm assuming some probably do and some don't. I watched a news segment the other week that mentioned people saying (some) new bulbs have burnt out sooner than stated on the packaging. It was also mentioned there's an LED light that sells for $65 dollars. I think it was for a flood light maybe. The man said that bulb would last your lifetime. I would think the companies wouldn't make money if that were really the case. And isn't it all about the money. .......... Picking up new bulbs this weekend....See MoreHow to post a reveal?
Comments (5)Actually, reveals are *supposed* to be posted in the Gallery section of the kitchens forum. To get to the Gallery section, click on the link near the top of the home page that lists all the thread topics, just above the first thread (the Sticky) where it says On-Topic Discussions [Switch to: ÃÂ Gallery ÃÂ :ÃÂ Conversations] You will know you are in the Gallery because the background on the page is lavender behind the list of topics. Although, over the last 3 years people have stopped posting their reveals over there as much. I assume because they didn't know that's what it was for. Plus maybe they wanted more attention/activity that seems to come on the Discussions side and think their post won't get as much attention over there ? And they think people don't know to go there and look. There is a good reason there is a Gallery side for the Kitchens forum (most of the other forums on GW do not have a gallery!!) . . . If you post your reveal on the Discussions side, it will roll off the last page of the forum within 2-3 months at the most. If you post on the Gallery side, it will stay an open thread for about 3 years ! In addition to reveals, the gallery side is also used for threads that have lots of idea pictures that need to be saved in one location. For example, the 'pictures of pantries' thread that is currently on page 1 in the gallery. Unfortunately, the gallery side seems to have turned into a place where newbies post (literally they just signed up that day and that was their first ever post) and they don't ever get responded to. In the past, someone would always come along and send the newbie a private message explaining how to use the forum, or post instructions right in their thread. Once they posted in the correct location, they would get lots of responses there. Also, if someone accidentally posted a reveal on the discussions side, one of the first responses was always to post their reveal over in the gallery instead. I had an idea a while back and wonder what others would think about implementing this. What if we all got back to posting reveals on the gallery side. On the discussions side, we would have one thread titled "NEW Reveal in the Gallery". Whenever someone posts a new reveal in the Gallery side, they also go to 'new reveal' thread on this (discussions) side of the forum and post there something along the lines of "I have posted my new reveal in the Gallery". That would bump the 'new reveal' thread up onto page one and we would all see it and be notified to go over to the Gallery to check out the newest reveal. They could even post a link to their thread.
