I use skim milk. I love milk. Once in awhile soy milk. Husband probably doesn't use a gallon of milk a year and he uses 2% when he does want some milk to put on something like apple dumplings.

Just wanted to say anything with soy is bad for the thyroid, and I seem to remember Alisande was the person who posted a question about 'thyroid' awhile ago? (I have 'thyroid' on the brain, so forgive me if it wasn't you ; ) ).

I use organic whole milk when I do use it occasionally. I guess the fat is suppose to make the lactose more easily digestible.

We don't drink milk. I'm lactose intolerant, DH has IBS. When I need milk for cooking, I generally buy 2% for the flavor, although I do dearly love whole milk (or even whole milk with a splash of cream) on my cereal, on those rare occasions that I eat it. I can't drink or use skim milk--it looks and tastes like dirty water to me.

I know there really isn't THAT much difference calorie-wise between 2% and the 3.something of whole milk, but don't we all feel better for thinking we're doing something to reduce our fat intake--LOL!

For drinking I would rather have 2%, but for the last couple of years we usually have whole milk because our granddaugter is here all the time.

DH drinks 2%. When DD is home from school she likes the skim milk.

I don't drink milk at all, but I will use whatever milk is on hand in recipes.

We don't drink milk. When I buy it for cooking, I buy just the amount I need...or as little as possible, and I buy organic. I only buy whole milk. Still, most of it gets fed to the animals because I just don't use that much.

Fat free Lactaid. I am not lactose intolerant, but I find the fat-free Lactaid has more body to it than regular skim milk (I hate skim milk). This is not as watery and it lasts longer than regular milk.....and yes, fat free and skim milk are the same but if you are like me and cannot drink skim milk, try this. I think you will like it.

We drink whole milk. I tried to switch the kids to 2% a few years back, but the pediatrician switched us back. My two youngest kids are small for their age (hereditary) and she wanted them to get the extra calories. If we buy two or three different types of milk, some goes to waste. So we just buy one kind.

I only use milk in coffee or tea (I don't drink it, I don't eat cereal), so I use Hood 2% (is that the same as whole?). DH used Lactaid and I buy him 1 1/2%, or something like that. Not skim, not whole.

skim is in the house; but I found as I got older, I can't stand to drink milk. Not sure why; I used to love it. Now it's strictly water.

I drink quite a lot of 2% and usually try to get Half and Half (10% cream) for coffee ... porridge ... etc. And have been known to add a bit to the 2% in the glass for drinking, on occasion ... to jazz it up a bit.

"Half and half" for 10% cream ... where do they get that from ... is it only half there, or something?

One of the odd things around here is that 5% cream ... and 10% cream ... sitting side by side on the supermarket's shelf ... are almost always priced at exactly the same level. And 2%, 1% and skim milk in 4-litre bags (slightly under an Imperial gallon, slightly over a U.S. gallon [wine measure, I've been told]) ... are almost always priced the same, while Whole milk, branded "Homo" (for "homogenized" - but they're all "homogenized" - squeezed through a valve under pressure to break up the fat globules, so that they no longer rise to the top) is upwards of a dollar more!

Go figure!

As a former farm kid (well, about 60 years ago), I agree that skim is somewhat akin to amended (adulterated?) water.

Sometimes in the morning on the farm we'd run out of milk for breakfast and Dad'd send me to the barn to get some of last night's milking from a 10 gal. can that had been sitting in a tub of cold water overnight, that we'd soon be taking, with the morning milk, to the cheese factory.

The cream would have risen to the top, and I'd give the can a bit of a (slight) shake to stir it up a bit (but not too much) ...

... and would repair to the house with a pan of fairly rich milk.

Grandma'd suggest to Dad that he should get after that boy for bringing in such rich milk, for it would be dropping the test for butter fat (on which our level of compensation depended somewhat) ...

.. and Dad'd sort of grin and suggest that he didn't figure that that little bit short would harm the test too much.

Skim milk, but have relatives that have drank Soy milk for years without problems. When I was staying with grandparents drank raw milk, warm just from the cow. Grandpa was very particular about cleaning the separator, and taking care of his herd. Never had problems, but probably would not do it now.
Also can drink goats milk, pasteurized only, but good.

We use 2% milk to cook with mainly as no one here drinks it.

How do people who don't drink milk get calcium in their diet?

I take a calcium supplement everyday and hope that it helps. I've never liked white milk. Even when I was a baby, my Mom gave me chocolate milk because I refused to drink it any other way.

I grew up on a dairy farm and drank raw milk. I hated milk when I was a kid and refused to drink it. Now I drink skim milk. I much prefer that. I think it was probably the rich flavor that I didn't like.

we vary between skim and 2%. growing up it was whole milk. when we started having kids it was 2%. now they give the grands 2% or less...

I use 2% organic milk, mostly in cereal. Organic milk lasts much longer before getting sour.

skim, went to skim, when 1/2 % wasn't available any more where we lived at the time.

I drink 1% lactose milk.

We use whole and 2%, both organic. I use whole in my coffee and tea and 2% on my cereal. I use both in cooking and baking. When eating cookies or cakes, it's whole for me. I grew up drinking raw milk and loved it. It's probably one of the reasons I still drink whole milk.

I am surprised that no one mentioned drinking goat milk. The goat milk I buy is 12% fat and usually available as organic.
