Here's a "gallery wall" we just did; I think we have to make a few changes though. A decorator I know told me that making two adjacent sides (top and left side, say) with the outside in a straight line makes it possible to do anything you want with the rest.

Susanka thank you for the lovely picture-it has given me a couple of ideas and thank you for the tip. I have had all kinds of trouble trying to post the pictures-tried Photobucket-that didn't work so I uploaded some to Flickr-I posted them in a message-perhaps you can take a peek. My son was shooting a Rebel XT for wildlife and got some awesome pictures. Santa brought him a Nikon D-3 for Xmas so he is really having fun with that one. But just for shooting some wildlife photos the Rebel would be a good choice. Thank you for your help-

Is this the hallway area where you plan to hang the pictures?

Or are you looking to place them on the stairwall? Or both?

Love your wall color in the entrance/hallway - kind of reminds me of the color on my LR wall.

Anyway, I hate to be discouraging, but I am not sure that the entry hall is the right place for those wonderful pix. Seems to me that you don't have a wall where someone will be able to stand back and appreciate the photos. The wall above the console table is at the wrong angle for people coming in the house, and the stair wall seems to not have a lot of space before you are blocked by the hanging light, etc. And with the pix being framed to 16x20, you need a fair amount of space to do them justice.

Any chance that you would have some wall space available elsewhere - maybe in the den? Perhaps you could pick one or two of the favorites and hang those above the console table, then when guests notice it, you could invite them to see more in another room. What you might also do is hang one above the fern.

Here is my other thought. If you had another spot for the grandfather clock, that wall would be a super place for a grouping of the photos - right in line visually as you enter, and if there is a light in the ceiling there, you could change it out for track lights that you would focus on the wall to wash it with light and create a gallery feeling.

An artist once gave me some advice about hanging photos/art. If you are using a hallway, hang on one wall only. In other words, if you are walking down a hallway, make sure all of the photos are on the same side of the hallway. If you have an L-shape, you can continue around the corner as long as you have a continuous progression of art. Her reason is that people can't look back and forth as they walk down the hallway.

Anyway, I think Les has a good point about using the clock space.

There are several decor magazines around that show an entire wall filled with photos from a foot or so above the baseboard to a foot or so below the ceiling.

Graywings, I would like to use both sides-if possible. I just don't want to overdo it and make a mess of things. Before I redid the room I random pictures hung going up the stairs but with all the beautiful framed and matted pictures my son has taken I just wanted to be able to display them. Thank you in advance.

Trace the framed photos onto brown craft paper, and cut them out.

Now you can put the brown paper pieces up on the wall with tape and move them around until you find an arrangement you like.

No nail holes until you're happy!

I also think Les' idea is right on the money. Being in the hall would draw people in and the photo's would really be appreciated. Do you have track lighting in that hall. Spot lights would really make the art look great. I can't wait to see them.

wildlifephotomom, what a lovely color in your hall! You're far more courageous than we are, we were doing good to paint our wall this soft green. Everything else is Aspen white, but we're working on it.

We used the "put cardboard or paper cutouts on the wall first" idea, and it worked for us. We only made very minor adjustments after that.

I also think Les might be right. Seems like your gorgeous photos deserve a more prominent place. I tried photos on both sides of a wall once and it made us (and visitors) actually uncomfortable going down the hall.
