Picking out Linoleum and Tile for Bathroom

Some time ago, I started a thread about the small, awkward bathroom behind the kitchen in my old house. Construction has now started and I still have decisions to make. I have picked out vintage style fixtures except for the neo-angle shower which will have a white preformed base and tiled walls. I am leaning towards this linoleum, figuring it would be silly to get an unusual floor and pick a boring color:

My kitchen has white cabs and soapstone so I was thinking of using white tile with black accents. I like the pinwheel tiles used by someone on the bathroom forum (see link below) but I don't think it would look as good in my space. I do not want all white though. Maybe I should go with colored tiles? I'm not sure where to look! Do I want glazed? I'd love something quietly floral. My contractor has given me some blue 1" squares, proposing that we do three rows of them, but that seems too "now" for me.

It was interesting to see the old bathroom ripped out. The top layer was so bland compared to the very colorful earlier finishes!

maureen, our daughter has a large victorian with
a small bath off the mud room. the mud room, bathroom
and laundry have a black and white basket weave tile.
It's gorgeous...all the floors in the house are wood,
so this tile backs up into wood. She used to have wood
in the mud room, bathroom and laundry room and replaced
it with the tile cause they're big skiers and need a big
area to enter the house all snowy and muddy. :)
her bathroom has white fixtures.

btw. she also has white cabs and soapstone counters.

That shower curtain is pretty intense. Are you sure you want to keep it? It's just a little "precious" for older girls with that much pink, IMHO. The only color that I think could stand up to it with older girls would be a pretty bright orange, and try for a Morroccan casbah look with even more pattern and color and brass hanging lanterns and screens. Layer a cobalt blue curtain under the pink and use some metallic chains for the tieback for the pink curtain. Paint the ceiling turquoise. You can get some talavera or Turkish tiles on Ebay and frame them for an accent. If you have a drop in sink, you could replace it with a talavera one. They aren't that expensive and give lots of style. Cobalt blue bath accessories and rug with other hints of turquoise and pink here and there and it would be fab. As an alternqative, I could definately see doing a fun apple green and white bathroom, but not with that curtain. For green and white, use the chair rail/wainscoating approach and put the green below with white above. A fresh gingham check or ticking stripe for the shower curtain and add in more color with different shades of green towels. A dark green rug and various green accessories would complete the look.

Somebody posted a picture of fan shaped mosaic marble that was gorgeous. I can't find the post but here is a picture that is similar. It was grouted with coordinating colour, no contrast and it looked so beautiful. Fan shaped marble mosaic. We have no idea if you are thinking classic or modern looks for your bath. Maybe you could pull out some inspiration pictures from Houzz to see what else catches your eye. This one is an all time favourite of mine - also quite a formal look basketweave Or, if you are looking for larger scale floor tiles, there are many choices too. Marble tile. This would match your counter, or dark grey or black to contrast.

I think it's a mistake to try to find a floor tile with some color (but not a lot) and also have a paint that has some color (but not a lot) to it. I would put color in one location or the other, but not both. One option if you're really determined to add color, is to do light blue glass subway tiles in the shower. It's nearly impossible to match a barely there color exactly, and trying to match it and missing often looks worse than just going with a bold contrasting color. So your choices are to go with black, white, or a marble that is guaranteed to have some swirls of the right color. Or to do the glass tile I mentioned since it's so obviously different.

As Cinar points out this is a subfloor issue. A flooring professional will help you with this. You will need to have someone who works with SHEET goods. This requires a different approach/set of skills than someone who works with rigid planks or tiles. I'm going to guess this is sheet VINYL (sheet lino is rare....but not impossible). The questions I would ask you, the homeowner: How old is the flooring? Who installed it? What is causing only the bathroom to let go (ahem....bathrooms have special concerns because there is SOOOOOOO much humidity which is DIFFERENT from other areas of the house - even kitchens do NOT have this level of humidity)? All of these question need to be answered by a flooring professional BEFORE a fix can be done. If they are SUPER talented they MIGHT be able to do this without cutting. But do NOT count on it! Prepare yourself for a cut/weld somewhere. That is the MOST COMMON approach. And hopefully they can SALVAGE the vinyl/lino. That isn't always possible - it depends on mold growth/contamination/glue residue, etc. If they cannot salvage the floor, you will need to make decisions as to what to do in the bathroom.

Wow, that tile is really beautiful! And such a nice big kitchen.

I've been shopping today for shower tile to match the linoleum. I came across this yellowy tile that could be used with bluish-accents. The samples look great with the flooring but I am almost afraid to use such a colorful combination these days. This combo seems kinda 1960s to me, but I'd like to use my 1930's streamline light fixture.

oh,sorry, I didn't realize you were committed to the
linoleum. I thought you were open to tile flooring
suggestions for white fixtures and a white kitchen
in your victorian home.

No wonder you were confused - as my original post was very confusing! Sorry! I am committed to the linoleum as this room is in a rather cold location and radiant heat is not an option. My house is a smallish 1930s colonial.

This project was supposed to be done in "oh... February" which to my ears sounded like March. So I was not prepared to make so many decisions so quickly. I am panicking.

Now I wish I could start this thread all over again: "I am using this linoleum flooring - what tile should I use for the shower"

I do not think I want to use that yellow anymore as much of my house - inside and out - is already that color!
