New cabinet hinges--why don't they fit?

Hi,

My cute little 1956 house still has the cute little original kitchen cabinets. They're good wood under a PO's sloppy paint job, and I am slowly working on restoring them. I decided to buy new hardware to replace the ooky oiled bronze stuff from the 70s or 80s.

I realized the new hardware wouldn't match perfectly, but at least the holes on the frames match. I did have to fill all the old screw holes on the doors, but that wasn't too hard and all seems okay. But now the cabinet doors won't stay shut. They will shut, but if you let go the door creaks open about half an inch.

My roommate thinks the area under the door plate should be routed out the thickness of the plate. I don't have a router and I know nothing about them. If this is what I need to do, is there a special bit for it?

Or do you think something else is the problem? These are just regular hinges from Home Depot. I don't understand why they don't fit! Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Julie
