4" cree lights take a larger box than regular 4" cans - check the specs, unless this has changed in the past year. I know this because we put 6" CREEs in throughout the house with a plan for the 4" CREE cans in the entry and as an accent light in the family room. The 4" CREEs didn't fit as the contractor hadn't actually checked the specs for the box. Ultimately we had to use standard 4" cans in place of the CREES in those two applications. We have 8' ceilings in the kitchen/family room and used the 6" CREEs as our main ceiling light.. I love them and really like the light. They are very bright. I can't see how one foot of ceiling height would make that much difference. I do wish that I had added an extra zone of control, ( we have three), as they are very bright and do not dim that well. They do dim, but the light is just kind of weird when dimmed. Sorry, can't give a better explanation than that. I wouldn't let the dimming issue stop you from using them. Have you tried doing a search, both on this forum and lighting?

I just finished construction of a new home with a lot of LED lighting. I used the CR6 as my budget light while installing the 'higher-end' LR6 in common areas. In total, I installed about 30 CR6 retrofit in Halo 6" cans and about 15 LR6 in the CREE can with CREE trim. I splurged the extra cost for the LR6 cans and lights in the most important rooms (library, kitchen, etc) thinking I really wanted the best there. Unfortunately, the very poor dimming curve of the LR6 in comparison to the CR6 makes me regret that decision. I can not really tell the difference in light quality between the two when they are on, but as they are turning on and off, the LR6 is much worse. I use a Vantage Controls lighting system and the dimming is terrible with the LR6 - I am looking into ripping them out and replacing with CR6 if you can believe it. In retrospect, I wish I had used the CR series everywhere - to be more specific, I used a lot of CR6's but I think the CR4's look the best. In general, it seems new construction is moving more towards the 4" form factor than the 6" and both CREEs give off the same amount of light (the LED chip appears to be the same in both models). If I were starting again (even though the CR6's are now a total bargain at ~$25 at Home Depot and the CR4's are still $50), I would do the entire house in CR4 edisons with halo 4" cans. They are a nice light that both I and my wife (who is very particular) like, the light is warm (~2800K), energy efficient, and easy to install. For What It's Worth, -Andy

Well, we decided to give it a try. We put in the only thing we could find in stock at Lowe's that was on the Cree list of compatible dimmers - the Lutron Diva DVW-600PH. The Cree list says it's good for 1-7 fixtures, but with our 2 we are seeing a subtle flicker at 100% on the dimmer, and a pronounced flicker at anything less. Like people have mentioned, there isn't a huge difference in brightness across the range of the dimmer. I also know that 100% on the dimmer is not 100% of what the fixture can put out, and I would like them to be brighter. They are okay at 100% on the dimmer but I do think I'm sacrificing some brightness and I'd like to get it back. Therefore, I'm going to ask them to take the dimmer out tomorrow. Just thought I'd pass along our experiences. Other than the ineffectual dimmer/flickering issue, I do like the fixtures. The light color is nice and the fixtures themselves are very streamlined and sleek.

Where is the ceiling fixture going to be? Also in the kitchen? We have a mix of Cree recessed lights and regular incandescent fixtures and it looks fine. You can tell that it is different, but the cans look like functional kitchen-y lighting to me, whereas the other fixtures are more decorative. Hope that makes sense. If you're not convinced, you could also try CFL fixtures. I think Rejuvenation sells some. They would probably give off a cooler light than incandescents.
