Look at the Farrow and Ball colors (colours) as they have a lot of "dirt" in them. I chose a color similar to "Down Pipe" (a deep blue gray) for cabinetry in my girls' bathroom and will use another color (a similar BM version) in my pantry.

You can find them online and then order a color card or catalog. The colors are beautiful.

It is a great color idea....just outside the box. :-) Almost everyone seems to be hooked on white when it comes to paint. I agree that F&B is a great place to start. Stone White would be gorgeous, IMO, but maybe too light for you. Green Smoke would be very dark and very sophisticated.

Vicnsb has a post about her stained and painted cabs. Her perimeter cabs are painted green with a glaze.

Also, if you do a search on "grey", there is a post about grey/taupe colored cabinets that might help you.

I love grey, green anything so I look forward to seeing what you choose. My cabinets were done prior to finding GW so I hadn't heard of Farrow & Ball but their colors are what I would seriously consider today.

My cabinets were finished with Milk Paint where I custom blended the color. I started out thinking I wanted black cabs & then decided to add a little green & white to lighten the effect. They probably aren't the shade you're seeking, but it's food for thought.

antiquesilver - do you have any other pics of your cabinets and counters? I am leaning towards black cabs and have been playing around with the idea of a wood counter. From what I can see, yours looks great. Thanks!

Malhgold, I hope these will give you an idea - it seems that in my old age I've become a lousy photographer LOL. These were already in photobucket but I can take new shots if you like.

I've had butcher block counters before & liked them so it was a no-brainer to do it again. I would have loved a soapstone or VA gray slate counter but I think it would have been too cave-like since the room doesn't get all that much light. It's a 150 year old house and the opposite wall of pantry cabinets w/ a fireplace is white, with the range by itself on the end wall like an orphan (only place hood could be vented). I didn't give much thought to the cornice when I had the cabinets done, then I decided to wait until a brilliant design emerged, now after 6 years it's emerged & I don't have any money! The backsplash is copper with recycled slate on the counter.

WOW, how did you make that copper have those waves in it? It's beautiful! Did you buy it that way? If so, where was it?

Flyleft, the backsplash evolved over a period of several years when nothing hit me as being the look I wanted. I'd thought of copper originally, but decided against it because I knew I wanted a red wall. Finally I decided I wanted the copper & if it clashed, I'd paint the wall. By then, it had to be a DIY project.

The sheet copper is craft weight (slightly thicker than a soda can) that can be cut with scissors & the widest roll I could get was 16" - hence the slate at the bottom. The wall had problems so the copper had to be mounted on thin board with glue & then the board attached to the wall. The wrinkles were created when I used Gorilla Glue to attach the copper; I zigzagged it on the board, spread it around some, laid the copper on it, & weighted it down. I also ignored, or didn't read all of the directions, that said the GLUE WOULD SWELL. And it did. Most people think I planned it to have texture but it was a stupid mistake that turned out better than the original plan.

The copper was ordered over the internet - I'll have to look thru my office to find the name of the company, but it was very reasonably priced. They had new copper & some that was 'new' old stock that had stains, etc. That's what I used since I was going to 'age' it anyway.

This is where I bought the copper. My experience with them was excellent.

Most of our cabinets are white(not stark white though) but I have one wall where they are a green/gray sort of sage color I guess. We are still in the midst of things so I wasn't planning to post photos for another two or three weeks but if you'd like I could take a picture of this section of cabinetry for you now. Hopefully I could figure out how to post a photo! Just let me know. I agonized over doing this color but I really like how it looks.

cathee, I'll also second the Farrow and Ball recommendation. They have some beautiful greys and, depending on where you live, you can IMO usually find a green tucked away in their colours ;-). Downpipe is a gorgeous colour. Another absolutely lovely colour for cabinetry is French Grey - take a look for Allison's island to get an idea about this colour. It is less dark to be sure, but it is utterly lovely. Hardwick White is another gorgeous colour - I've been deliberating on using that as an accent wall in my dining room - so not cabinetry at all - and I'm completely smitten with this colour. I've decided to go with its cousin - Lamp Room Grey - but Hardwick White is IMO an even more splendid and interesting colour. There are certainly many more colours in the grey-green and dark realm.

The other thing about F&B is that its finish is out of this world. I've used their very popular Pointing to paint all the trim and woodwork in one of my rooms and despite that the woodwork in my house is nearly 85 years old, once painted, the wood looks like fine china LOL! Very delicate and very sophisticated. Worth it to be sure.

Of course, I've only used their water-based paints.
If you're going for oil paint on the cabinetry, in addition to F&B's oils (which I don't have experience with), I will also recommend Fine Paints of Europe which I *do* have experience with. Absolutely outstanding. (Of course, so is the clean-up with oil-based paint).

Farrow & Ball just recently announced their new water-based eggshell. They say it's tough enough for radiators. I wonder how it would be for cabinets....now I have to go find a cabinet to paint!

Well, they're not grayish, but there are some deep green cabinets in the Winter, 2008, Beautiful Kitchens, page 70-75. They are in a renovated Victorian kitchen and the color is Benjamin Moore Forest Green, should you find a copy.
