Waxwings in the storm.....pic heavy

During the storm the other day a flock of bohemian waxwings descended on our (I think) crab apple tree. Since these birds aren't all that common around here I had to at least try and get some shots. The snow was pretty deep and I was sure they would fly off before I got close enough, but they didn't. They must have been hungry and let me get fairly close.

Here are some of the shots from the day of the storm and then they returned the day after. Now the berries are just about gone so I doubt I will see them again this year. Sure was something to see and photograph though, such a beautiful bird and they make a wonderful sound.

Great pictures.......

One day when I came home for lunch, there were hundreds swooping in and out of my crabapple trees. I'll never forget it.

Beautiful shots! Some of them look like Chinese watercolors.

I haven't seen these birds in years. I remember the last time a flock of them arrived to feed in my Autumn Olives, and they passed berries down to each other. Gorgeous birds!

Hello Everyone, Mike, Im so sorry to see all of the damage to your beautiful trees. Im sure it was awful feeling like you had no control of the amount of snow building up on the trees and hearing all of the limbs breaking. That is a awful thing to hear... Last winter DH and I were outside knocking off the snow from the fronds of our palms. The heavy amounta of snow plays havoc onthe trees that still have leaves on them. Like someone else said, mother nature knows what she is doing when she sheds the leaves, this time the timing was off just a bit. Thinking of you and all of the others up north who are still without power. I hope that the other Electric companies are all coming to the rescue to help you all get the lines and power back on real soon. Take care Mike, Hi to SISSY!!! Laura in VB

Thanks Jim.....since it was so darned cold and we had no specific plans except to entertain the grandkids it was a perfect opportunity to sit on my keester and look at the birds. We do get a pretty good mix of backyard birds...and this was really quite fun. I had never taken an entire day to record all the different backyard birds and I was really impressed with the variety...some times the very things we see each day are not noticed because of the familiarity...but, I did enjoy this and plan to do it again. Its nice when my husband and I can get some time off work and travel to Audubon Park, or the wildlife refuge to take a look at the birds...but, sometimes its amazing what you can see in your own backyard....thanks again Jim... ~Kathy~

What a beautifully marked bird!! I know we have them around here, but I have never seen them. You got some good pictures of them!! Good sighting!

Thank you for posting your photos. I've never seen a cedar waxing. What a beautiful bird and the photos are stunning.
Susan is right - they do resemble a Chinese watercolor.

Two weeks ago a had a small flock of robins descend on my 4 winterberry hollies. It didn't take before all the berries were gone but it was fun to watch while it lasted.

What beautiful birds. How thrilling to see them and be able to get pictures. Were you knee-deep in snow when you took the pictures?

Beautiful!
One year while my Uncle Gene was still alive there was a huge flock outside. Gene used to sit in the garden area out back most of the day. He watched those birds for a couple days and enjoyed them so much! He said too they'd pass berries on to each other. i watched them with him one evening and it is a wonderful and treasured memory!

Thanks everyone...they haven't been around again at all since Thursday :( So glad I did go out to get the photos in the snow! Maybe they will be my Christmas card next year :)

Great pictures! One year a flock landed in my mom and dad's dogwood tree. Dad was able to get a few pictures but not like yours. My Dmom talked about that for years.
